A hamstring strain can be a mild pull, a partial tear or a complete tear, so “strain” and “tear” are not opposite diagnoses. Symptoms can hint at severity, but they cannot reliably tell you how much tissue is injured. A clinician can assess the injury, especially when pain is severe, walking is difficult or bruising and weakness are substantial.
Are a hamstring strain and a tear different?
Not necessarily. “Strain” is a broad term for an injury to a muscle or tendon; it may involve stretching, a partial tear or a complete tear. People and clinicians may use “tear” to describe damage within that range. The word alone does not establish how serious the injury is.

A particularly serious injury is a tendon avulsion: the tendon pulls away from the bone and can sometimes take a small piece of bone with it. This is different from a mild muscle pull and needs prompt medical assessment. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) describes the injury spectrum and avulsions.

What symptoms can indicate severity?
Hamstring injuries often cause sudden pain at the back of the thigh, sometimes during sprinting or another forceful movement. Tenderness, swelling, bruising, weakness and difficulty standing or walking may follow. A severe injury can produce a snapping sensation or an audible pop. Bruising may develop over the following days, and weakness can last longer than the initial pain.

The pattern can offer clues, not a home diagnosis. nidirect’s patient guidance describes the usual three-grade framework:
| Grade | Typical pattern | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mild injury, often with sudden pain and tenderness; strength loss is not usually expected. | That no tear is present. A strain can include tissue tearing. |
| 2 | More pain and tenderness; swelling or bruising may occur, with some weakness. It generally involves partial tearing. | The exact amount of damage or recovery time. |
| 3 | Severe injury, usually a complete tear, with marked pain, swelling and bruising; a pop or inability to use the leg may occur. | Whether the tendon has pulled away from bone. That requires clinical assessment. |
These descriptions overlap. Pain intensity, bruising or a pop cannot by themselves confirm a grade or distinguish a muscle tear from a tendon avulsion.

- Tights vs Sleeves: Get targeted relief for problematic areas rather than an all-over "squeeze" of the entire leg! This is extremely helpful for pulled hamstrings and overworked quadriceps to promote healthy blood flow, ensure optimized performance and minimize the risk of injury.
- Enhances performance by promoting blood flow, reducing muscle vibrations, and decreasing fatigue while increasing structural support and combatting the annoying effects of DOMS. Compression is also beneficial for healing damaged or torn muscles after sudden injuries.
- Wearing the BODYPROX thigh sleeves during heavy lifts can help with mind and body connection, helping to "engage" your muscles during training sessions. They ensure your muscles are getting the oxygen they need to function properly while simultaneously preventing lactic acid build-up in your muscles.
- Great to wear on and off the track! Thigh compression sleeves fit well under clothing so you can prevent and protect against further injury while at work or around the house.
- Made with a knitted blend of Nylon and Latex with 10% Spandex for extreme stretch that releases excess body heat and prevents skin irritation. Silicone waves keep sleeves in place. Comes in 4 sizes: measure the circumference at the top of your thigh to find your best fit!
When should you get medical help?
Seek prompt assessment if you have severe pain, extensive or worsening bruising or swelling, marked weakness, substantial stiffness, or difficulty standing or walking. In the UK, NHS guidance advises contacting NHS 111 for severe or worsening pain, substantial or worsening swelling or bruising, pain when standing or walking, marked stiffness, or symptoms that do not improve with self-care. Use the appropriate local medical service outside the UK. The NHS guidance covers when to seek help and initial care.

How long does recovery take?
Recovery depends on the extent and location of the injury, how function returns and whether a tendon avulsion or surgery is involved. Mild injuries may improve over days; more severe injuries can take weeks or months. Symptoms alone cannot provide a dependable return date.
Surgical repair has a different rehabilitation timeline from an ordinary muscle strain. AAOS says rehabilitation after proximal hamstring tendon repair typically takes at least six months; after distal repair, return to athletic activity requires approximately three months. These are repair-specific estimates, not general recovery times for all hamstring strains or tears.

What can you do in the first few days?
For a mild-to-moderate injury, NHS guidance recommends PRICE for the first two to three days:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Protect: Avoid movements or activity that worsen the pain.
- Rest: Pause aggravating activity while symptoms are acute.
- Ice: Apply an ice pack or frozen vegetables wrapped in a towel for up to 20 minutes every two to three hours.
- Compression: Use a snug elastic or tubular bandage, not one that is tight.
- Elevation: Raise the leg when practical.
For those first three days, the same NHS guidance advises avoiding heat, massage and alcohol. Begin gentle movement when pain allows. Severe injuries may need specialist care, so self-care is not a substitute for assessment when symptoms are significant.

How should you return to sport?
Return when function—not just pain—has recovered. AAOS advises waiting until strength and flexibility have returned. International consensus guidance recommends tailoring rehabilitation to the athlete, sport, injured muscle and injury severity; progression considers symptoms, strength and how the leg responds to previous loading. Later rehabilitation commonly builds toward running and sprinting that match the sport’s demands.
A fixed number of days, a grade label or the ability to jog once is not enough to establish readiness. Progression should be gradual and guided by function and response to increasing load. This matters because authors of a 2018 rehabilitation review reported that nearly one third of hamstring strains recur within the first year after return to sport. The review abstract is indexed by PubMed.
