“Halt and catch fire” refers both to a dramatic computing expression and to AMC’s period drama. The name’s literal-fire explanation is described by AMC as “popular legend”; Intel’s documented x86 HLT instruction halts execution without making a processor catch fire.
What does “halt and catch fire” mean?
Context determines the meaning. In computing, it is a dramatic expression associated with a supposed instruction that would make a computer malfunction catastrophically. In television, Halt and Catch Fire is AMC’s drama set during the early-1980s rise of the personal computer.

AMC’s 2014 title explainer recounts the overheating-wires story as “popular legend,” not as verified processor history. Its description of commands competing for control and a system self-destructing is AMC’s account of the title’s inspiration; it should not be confused with Intel’s documented HLT behavior. Does Intel’s HLT instruction make a computer catch fire?
No. Intel’s instruction reference defines HLT as an instruction that “Stops instruction execution and places the processor in a HALT state.” That is a processor state, not a command to overheat or destroy hardware. Intel 64 and IA-32 Architectures Software Developer’s Manual

How the documented instruction works
- After
HLTexecutes, the processor stops instruction execution and enters the HALT state. - Execution can resume in response to specified events, including an enabled interrupt, a debug exception, BINIT#, INIT#, or RESET#. Intel’s list includes non-maskable interrupts (NMI) and system-management interrupts (SMI) among the interrupt cases.
- In protected mode and virtual-8086 mode,
HLTis privileged and requires privilege level 0. - On a processor supporting Hyper-Threading, the instruction halts only the logical processor that executed it.
These details describe a controlled processor instruction with defined ways to resume execution. They do not support the literal “catch fire” story.
What is AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire about?
AMC described the series as a drama about the early-1980s PC boom, following an unlikely trio—a visionary, an engineer, and a prodigy—as they risk their personal and professional lives in a race to build a computer. The network announced a June 1, 2014 premiere and named Chris Cantwell and Chris Rogers as the creators. The announced cast included Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy, Mackenzie Davis, Kerry Bishé, and Toby Huss. AMC’s premiere announcement
