Halo Support recommends it for newcomers playing in release order. If you would rather begin with a book, choose Eric Nylund’s Halo: The Fall of Reach for background on the Spartan-II program and the Master Chief. The novel adds context, but you do not need to read it before playing.
There is no single required route into Halo. Your best starting point depends on whether you want to play first, read first, or try a newer version of the original campaign.

Choose your starting point by what you want to do first
| If you want to… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Play Halo in release order | Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary in MCC | Halo Support recommends it as the starting campaign for players new to the games. |
| Read before playing and learn the early backstory | Halo: The Fall of Reach | The 2001 novel introduces foundational story elements, including the Spartan-II program and the Master Chief’s early history. |
| Play a newer presentation of the original campaign | Halo: Campaign Evolved | Halo Studios announced this remake for newcomers. Its announced release date, July 28, 2026, has passed; check current platform listings for availability. |
| Begin with a later game | Halo Infinite | It was presented as a new chapter and a possible entry point, while still continuing Halo’s broader story. |
For the game-first route, MCC contains six games, but you do not need to play all six at once or read novels between them. Halo Support’s quick-start guidance is simple: “If you’re totally new to Halo games, we recommend starting with a Campaign.” Its release-order recommendation points to Combat Evolved Anniversary. Why The Fall of Reach works as a novel-first start
Eric Nylund’s Halo: The Fall of Reach was published on October 30, 2001, before the first game. It establishes the origins and context of the Spartan-II program and the Master Chief, making it a natural choice if the characters and history interest you as much as the gameplay. Halo Studios’ official book guide treats it as a foundational story, and franchise commentary notes that it introduced enduring concepts, including the Master Chief’s meeting with Cortana.
#1 Best Overall
Reading it first is a preference, not an assignment. The games offer their own entry into the central story, and the official newcomer guidance does not prescribe a single book-and-game sequence. If you read The Fall of Reach first, you can move on to Combat Evolved without needing to finish a larger reading list.
Do you need to read Halo novels to understand the games?
No. Halo books expand the setting and follow characters or events beyond what a particular game covers, but they are not generally required preparation for playing. Halo Studios, for example, describes Halo: Shadows of Reach as a lead-in to Halo Infinite while explicitly saying it is not “required reading.” That is a useful guide to the relationship between the media: a novel can deepen a game’s context without becoming a prerequisite.
Halo Studios’ answer to “How would someone who’s new to the lore get into it?” likewise says there is no one right answer and points to several accessible starting places. Begin with the medium you are most likely to enjoy, then add books when a character, era, or unanswered question catches your interest. Halo Studios’ Canon Fodder: Foundations discusses newcomer entry points and the role of books in the wider story.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you choose books, follow a thread rather than the whole library
The official Halo book guide groups stories by subject and era—including the Forerunner Saga, Kilo-5, Master Chief and Blue Team, Alpha-Nine, Gray Team, the Ferrets, and standalone stories. That makes character or era a more practical way to choose a second book than treating every title as one mandatory sequence.
Rank #3
For the early game-era story
After The Fall of Reach, the original-novel group continues with Halo: The Flood (William C. Dietz, 2003), Halo: First Strike (Eric Nylund, 2003), and Halo: Ghosts of Onyx (Eric Nylund, 2006). The Flood retells Combat Evolved with additional perspectives; First Strike follows events after that game. These are options for readers who want more of that period, not a checklist every player must complete.
For more context around Halo Infinite
Halo: The Rubicon Protocol by Kelly Gay, released August 9, 2022, follows survivors after the UNSC Infinity is ambushed on Zeta Halo. Halo: Edge of Dawn, also by Kelly Gay and released December 16, 2025, is set after the Master Chief defeats Escharum. Both are targeted follow-on reads for readers interested in that part of the timeline, not opening books required to start the games.
Rank #4
For short fiction
Halo: Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One was listed by Halo Studios as released May 26, 2026, in trade paperback, ebook, and unabridged audiobook formats. The collection includes more than thirty short stories, including stories previously published online and new tales. Its varied format makes it an alternative for readers who prefer shorter pieces over beginning a novel sequence.

What about starting with Halo: Campaign Evolved or Halo Infinite?
Halo: Campaign Evolved
Halo Studios announced Halo: Campaign Evolved as a remake of the original game’s campaign, intended to give new players a way into the story from the beginning. The announcement specified Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, with a release date of July 28, 2026. Because that date has passed, availability and platform details should be checked against current listings rather than inferred from the announcement. Halo Studios’ executive producer Damon Conn said the remake’s starting point could help new players understand the story from its beginning. See Halo Studios’ announcement and Xbox Wire’s launch coverage.
Halo Infinite
Halo Infinite was positioned as a new chapter and a possible entry point for newcomers, but it continues the wider continuity. Choose it if its setting or newer-game presentation is what draws you in; choose Combat Evolved Anniversary instead if you want the series’ release-order opening. The original entry-point positioning is described in Halo Studios’ Halo Infinite announcement.
