Hall-effect switches sense a magnet’s movement with a sensor on the keyboard’s circuit board; optical switches use light and a photosensor. Either approach can support adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger in particular keyboards, so the technology name alone does not tell you which board is faster, more adjustable, or a better fit. Compare the specific keyboard’s features, software, feel, layout, and compatibility.
How Hall-effect and optical switches detect a press
Hall-effect: a magnet and a sensor
A Hall-effect switch has a magnet in its moving stem. A Hall sensor on the circuit board detects changes in the magnetic field as the key moves. The keyboard can use that changing signal to determine how far a key has traveled, rather than only detecting a single on/off point. Wooting describes its Lekker switches this way in the Two HE product information.

Optical: light and a photosensor
Optical switches use light, but the term covers more than one design. A conventional optical switch can register when a moving part interrupts a light beam. An analog optical design can instead measure how much light reaches a photosensor as the stem moves. Razer describes its Analog Optical Gen-2 switches as using infrared light and a PCB-mounted phototransistor; its explanation applies to that design, not necessarily every optical switch.
That distinction matters: “optical” does not automatically mean a simple on/off light gate. Razer’s Huntsman V3 Pro announcement describes analog optical switches with adjustable actuation and Rapid Trigger, while its optical switch overview explains a conventional beam-based implementation.
#1 Best Overall
- Tip: The magnetic switch is designed for magnetic keyboards (Hall effect keyboards), not for mechanical keyboards.
- Experience the Next Generation of Magnetic Switches: The Creamy Jade magnetic switch is a true blessing for Hall Effect keyboard enthusiasts. Designed as a linear Hall Effect switch for mainstream HE (magnetic) gaming keyboards, it delivers an incredibly smooth and responsive typing experience. Factory pre-lubed, it not only produces a deeply satisfying “thock” sound but also completely eliminates any scratchiness or gritty feel. Paired with a 20mm long spring, the rebound is quicker and crisper, making every keystroke feel sharp and decisive.
- Precision Engineered Specifications: With an initial force of 30gf (min) and an end force of 55gf (max), and a total travel of 3.50±0.1mm. The initial magnetic flux is 95+15GS, and the bottom magnetic flux is 580+50GS. This force range ensures a light, agile feel during high-speed operation while delivering just the right amount of feedback at bottom-out, effectively reducing finger fatigue after prolonged use. The well-designed gradient between initial and bottom magnetic flux not only guarantees consistent triggering but also gives the switch its distinctive “thocky” deep sound profile.
- Factory Lubed for out of the box smoothness: Factory pre-lubed delivers a silky smooth feel right out of the box, while tight manufacturing tolerances minimize stem wobble for consistent and stable keystrokes. Built-in light diffuser enhances RGB illumination for a vibrant keyboard lighting effect. The long-stroke, high-quality spring provides a fast and crisp rebound. Whether for competitive gaming or daily typing, this magnetic switch offers a premium experience that is stable, smooth, low-noise, and wonderfully responsive.
- Built to Last: Rated for 100 million keystroke cycles, these switches are highly durable. Premium materials: POM stem for self-lubricating smoothness, PC upper case for excellent light diffusion, and PA66 bottom case for structural stability. The durable construction also contributes to a clean, satisfying sound profile that will elevate your typing experience.
What the sensing method means for features
Adjustable actuation depends on the keyboard
Actuation is the point in a keypress at which the keyboard registers the press. Some analog keyboards let you choose that point; others have a fixed actuation point. For a specific example, Razer specifies an adjustable 0.1–4.0 mm actuation range for the Huntsman V3 Pro line’s Analog Optical Gen-2 switches. Wooting lists a 0.1–4.0 mm analog input range for the Two HE’s Lekker switches. These are model specifications, not category-wide limits.
Rapid Trigger changes reset behavior
On a keyboard that supports Rapid Trigger, a key can reset and register again based on its movement direction and configured sensitivity, rather than waiting for a fixed reset position. This can make repeated keypresses responsive to small movements. The exact controls and behavior vary by model and software.

Rapid Trigger is not exclusive to Hall-effect switches. Wooting says it is available on supported Lekker Hall-effect keyboards and older Flaretech optical keyboards. On those older Flaretech boards, Wooting notes that flexibility is reduced and settings are not available per key. SteelSeries also describes Rapid Trigger on supported Apex Pro keyboards as resetting once a key begins to lift; check the SteelSeries support information for its supported products.

Why switches are not automatically interchangeable
A keyboard’s circuit board and sensors are designed for particular switch technology. Wooting says its Lekker Hall-effect switches cannot be installed in its Flaretech optical boards, or vice versa, because each requires a different board with specific sensor components. Before buying replacement switches, check the compatibility list for the exact keyboard rather than relying on a similar-looking switch or socket.

Analog input and game support
Because an analog keyboard can estimate key travel, it may send input based on how far a key is pressed rather than only whether it is pressed or released. Wooting says the Two HE supports analog input, but whether that input is useful depends on the game and platform. Wooting also says its analog movement feature on Linux and macOS is limited to games that support DirectInput. Do not assume every game handles analog keyboard movement in the same way.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do Hall-effect or optical switches have lower latency?
The switch type alone does not establish a universal speed winner. Razer reports an average response time of 1.7 ms for its Huntsman V3 Pro testing and makes performance claims about its calibrated analog optical switches. That is a manufacturer-reported result for a named product, not an independent head-to-head benchmark proving that optical keyboards as a class are faster than Hall-effect keyboards—or the reverse. Compare test conditions and the specific keyboard’s implementation before treating a response-time claim as decisive.
