Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Hacktoberfest Weekend Challenge: Build for a Friend is over. Its entry window closed on October 5, 2026, at 6:59 AM UTC. The challenge asked participants to build a new project centered on open-source AI that solves a real problem for a friend or loved one—not to contribute a pull request to an existing project.
What was the Build for a Friend challenge?
DEV Community described this as the first of five challenges planned for October 2026. Its central prompt was: “Build something with open-source AI at its core.” The project also had to serve a specific person and explain why open innovation mattered to that person.

The challenge page suggested possibilities such as an allergy-aware meal planner, a language-practice partner for a patient, or a tool that turns a relative’s voice memos into a family recipe book. Those were examples, not required categories. The key was a useful problem for someone the builder knew, with open-source AI playing a meaningful role in the solution.
When did entries close?
The official contest rules set the entry period from October 2, 2026, at 2:00 AM UTC through October 5, 2026, at 6:59 AM UTC. The deadline has passed, so the challenge is not an open submission opportunity.

What did a valid entry need?
Entrants had to create a new project during the entry period and publish a DEV submission post using the challenge template and the #hf26challenge tag. The post needed to link to both a demo—either a deployed project or a video—and the project’s code. It also had to explain why open-source AI mattered to the project.

- A new project: It had to be built during the entry period, with open-source AI at its core. The rules give examples such as an open-weight model, an open-source agent framework or harness, or local inference.
- A real person’s problem: The project had to help a friend or loved one, rather than simply demonstrate a technology.
- A complete DEV post: The submission had to use the challenge template and include the unique tag. The contest rules specify “A published submission post on DEV that uses the submission template and unique challenge tag (#hf26challenge) provided on the Contest Page.”
- A demo and code link: The post had to let judges see the project and inspect its code.
- An explanation of open innovation: Entrants needed to make clear what the open components did and why that openness benefited the person being served.
A pull request to an existing project did not qualify as an entry. The challenge page also invited builders to show how they worked; saving and embedding or linking an agent session was optional. Entrants could use AI assistance, provided they followed the other rules, and were encouraged to credit substantial prior work that was not generic.
Could people enter as a team?
Yes. The challenge FAQ allowed teams of up to four. A team submitted one entry and listed the collaborators’ DEV handles. The FAQ also said participants had to be at least 18 years old. For geographic eligibility, the official contest rules—not the summary FAQ—are the authority.

How was the challenge judged?
The challenge page listed writing quality as the most heavily weighted criterion, followed by relevance to the prompt and theme, creativity, and technical execution. Use of partner technology was relevant to entries competing for partner-category awards. If entries tied, the contest rules said judges would use positive reactions on the DEV submission post to decide.
For builders choosing a project direction, that combination favored a focused problem they could solve and clearly demonstrate in the short window. Open-source AI needed to be central rather than incidental, while the write-up had to explain the design and tradeoffs in terms of the person the project served. These are practical readings of the prompt and judging criteria, not additional eligibility rules.
