Kernel was not selling a brain implant when Futurism published “Hacking Intelligence: This Company Wants to Put a Computer in Your Brain.” The February 7, 2017 article described Bryan Johnson’s long-term ambition for a neuroprosthesis: a device that might one day help mimic, repair or improve cognition. Kernel’s current public materials instead describe non-invasive brain measurement and research systems. The difference matters: the 2017 vision was a research direction, not an available implant, and Kernel does not describe its current systems as treatments.
What did “a computer in your brain” mean?
The phrase was a headline for an ambitious brain-computer interface concept, not a literal computer ready to be implanted. The 2017 Futurism article said Johnson’s company, Kernel, was pursuing a neuroprosthesis intended to interact with brain activity. Its longer-term vision was to mimic, repair or improve cognitive functions and, ultimately, to make interaction with computing less dependent on screens, keyboards and voice commands.

The article linked the technical foundations of that ambition to work by Theodore W. Berger, a professor at the University of Southern California. That association did not mean a finished Kernel device existed: the article presented an intended direction, not a validated product or established treatment.

The idea was that computers and people communicate through limited channels. Johnson argued, as quoted by Futurism in 2017: “Our connection with our new creations of intelligence is limited by screens, keyboards, gestural interfaces, and voice commands — constrained input/output modalities. We have very little access to our own brains, limiting our ability to co-evolve with silicon-based machines in powerful ways.”

J. Craig Venter, also quoted in the article, framed the brain as a frontier for understanding biological information: “As a pioneer in ushering in the reading and writing of the genetic code and the programmability of biology, it is clear to me that understanding the brain and neural code will come next.” These statements express the rationale and ambition behind the concept. They are not evidence that neural code had been decoded or that a device could safely write it.
What does Kernel offer now?
Kernel’s present public description centers on non-invasive brain measurements, scans available through partner clinics, and reports intended to track brain function over time. Its technology page describes Kernel Flow, a time-domain functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) system for research organizations and clinics. This is a different approach from the invasive neuroprosthesis envisioned in the 2017 article: it measures brain activity without being implanted rather than writing neural code or restoring cognition.

Kernel describes its systems as for research use only, not intended to diagnose, treat or manage disease. It also states that the system has not been tested for electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility or biocompatibility. Those qualifications mean the current materials do not establish a clinical treatment or consumer implant. Kernel lists 3,500 measurement channels per Flow system and says it has invested over $50 million in developing Flow; both are company-published figures, with no year stated on the technology page.

Can a computer be put in your brain now?
Not through the Kernel offering described in its current public materials. The 2017 headline referred to a proposed future neuroprosthesis; Kernel’s current description is of non-invasive measurement technology and related services. A brain scan through a partner clinic is not the implanted device described in that article, and should not be mistaken for a diagnosis or treatment.

The 2017 article said Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s together affected “more than 56 million” people worldwide, but it did not identify the original publisher or the year of the figure. Without that attribution, it should not be repeated as a verified current statistic.
