H.265 (HEVC) is usually the better choice when bandwidth efficiency, high-resolution video, or HDR matters; H.264 (AVC) is often the safer choice when you need broad compatibility with older or unknown devices. Neither codec guarantees better-looking video in every situation. Results depend on the encoder and its settings, bitrate, source content, streaming platform, and viewers’ playback devices.
What is the difference between H.265 and H.264?
H.264, also called Advanced Video Coding (AVC), and H.265, also called High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), are codecs: methods for compressing video so it can be stored or transmitted. HEVC is generally more compression-efficient. That can mean comparable perceived quality at a lower bitrate, or more detail at a similar bitrate, but the result varies with the encoder, settings, and content.

Apple’s 2017 technical talk on authoring 4K and HDR HLS streams said HEVC enabled higher-quality delivery “at about a 40 percent lower bit rate compared to H.264.” Treat that as Apple’s estimate for its delivery context, not a guaranteed saving for every stream or encoder. Is H.265 better quality than H.264?
Not automatically. A codec describes how video is compressed; the final picture also depends on the chosen bitrate, resolution, frame rate, encoder implementation, profile and level, and the material being encoded. Fast motion, fine texture, and noise can affect compression differently from a static scene. A poorly configured HEVC stream can look worse than a well-configured H.264 stream.
At a given quality target, HEVC may need less bitrate. At a given bitrate, it may preserve more detail. Those are useful tendencies, not guarantees. The cited platform recommendations are operating guidance, not a universal, apples-to-apples quality comparison.
Does H.265 use less bandwidth?
Usually, for comparable perceived quality, HEVC can use less bitrate than AVC. Since bitrate is the amount of video data sent each second, a lower bitrate can reduce network bandwidth requirements. The actual difference depends on the encoder, content, settings, and quality target; don’t assume a fixed percentage reduction when planning a stream.

As one platform-specific reference, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API recommendations, last updated September 24, 2026, list these input bitrates for H.264 and H.265. They are service recommendations, not results from a controlled equal-quality test. Google Cloud Live Stream API encoding settings
| Input format | H.264 recommendation | H.265 recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p50/60 | 20 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 2160p50/60 | 50 Mbps | 37.5 Mbps |
Use the requirements published by your actual streaming destination and encoder rather than treating these figures as universal targets. A stream also needs a stable upload connection with capacity for its bitrate and other network traffic.
Should you use H.264 or H.265 for live streaming?
Choose for the destination platform and intended viewers, not just for compression efficiency. YouTube Live currently accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, supports up to 60 fps, recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and specifies H.265 for HDR. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into output formats for viewers, so the codec you send is not necessarily the codec every viewer receives. Check the current YouTube Live encoder settings before configuring a stream.

Prefer H.265 when
- Your platform accepts HEVC and your encoder can produce a supported profile and level.
- Reducing bitrate is important for your available upload bandwidth, or you are delivering high-resolution video.
- You need an HDR workflow whose platform requirements call for HEVC. YouTube Live lists H.265 for HDR; Apple’s described HDR formats also require HEVC. Check the destination’s current rules. Apple’s HDR and HLS guidance
Prefer H.264 when
- Your audience may use older devices, older software, or a playback setup whose HEVC support you cannot verify.
- The platform or workflow calls for H.264, or you want a widely supported baseline.
- You have confirmed that the H.264 profile, level, container, and settings match the destination’s requirements.
Does H.265 work on older devices?
Support depends on the device, operating system, resolution, frame rate, and HEVC profile and level. Apple says HEVC is supported on newer Apple operating systems, while older-device support can depend on resolution and frame rate. Its guidance identifies 1080p or lower and 60 fps or lower as more broadly compatible with older devices; that is not a guarantee for every device. Apple device compatibility guidance

- Resolution and frame rate: Choose what your source and destination support. Higher resolution and frame rate generally require more bitrate to maintain detail.
- Bitrate: Follow the destination’s recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec, then confirm your upload connection can sustain it.
- Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends two seconds for live encoder settings. Other destinations may specify a different value.
- Codec profile and level: Support can vary even when two devices both claim to support the same codec. Apple’s HLS authoring specification advises keeping profile and level no higher than needed; for some H.264 variants it recommends at or below High Profile Level 4.1 for maximum compatibility. This is guidance for Apple HLS, not a universal limit. Apple HLS authoring specification
- Container and transport: In Apple’s cited HLS authoring guide, H.264 can be carried in fragmented MP4 or MPEG transport stream, while HEVC uses fragmented MP4. Container requirements vary by workflow.
- HDR signaling: If you are sending HDR, confirm the destination’s codec, color, and metadata requirements; choosing HEVC alone does not configure an HDR stream.
- Multiple renditions: Adaptive delivery may use several bitrate variants. Apple’s HLS specification describes example variants, not fixed prescriptions, and recommends adapting them to the content and workflow. Apple HLS authoring specification
Apple’s HLS examples illustrate that even within one workflow there is no single bitrate for a resolution. For a 1920×1080 variant at the source frame rate, its table includes H.264 at 6,000 or 7,800 kbps, HEVC at 4,500 or 5,800 kbps, and HDR HEVC at 5,400 or 7,000 kbps. These are possible variant choices in Apple’s specification, not universal settings for live streaming.
How to choose for your audience and workflow
- Check the destination first. Confirm its supported ingest codecs, transport, bitrate guidance, keyframe interval, and HDR requirements. Platform requirements can change.
- Check playback compatibility. If you can’t verify that viewers’ devices support HEVC at your chosen resolution, frame rate, profile, and level, favor H.264 or test with representative devices.
- Set a realistic quality target. Decide on resolution and frame rate, then use the platform’s bitrate guidance as a starting point. Don’t treat a bitrate recommendation as a promise of identical quality across encoders.
- Test the actual stream. Review playback on the target platform and devices, including motion-heavy scenes and any HDR workflow. Check for dropped frames, decoding problems, and image artifacts.
- Keep a fallback where it matters. If the destination and production workflow allow it, have a compatible H.264 configuration ready when HEVC ingest or playback fails.
What H.265 and H.264 do not decide
Neither codec makes a stream reliable by itself. Upload stability, encoder configuration, platform ingest, transcoding, and viewer-device support all affect whether viewers can watch smoothly. A more efficient codec may reduce bandwidth needs, but it cannot compensate for a connection that drops or settings the platform rejects.

Encoding compute requirements also depend on the encoder and workflow. The cited Google Cloud guidance notes that adding output ladder steps requires more computing power; it does not establish that one of these codecs universally needs more processing than the other.
