If you’re formatting an essay, a résumé, or any document with strict layout rules, you need both set correctly.
This guide shows you exactly where to change line spacing and letter spacing in Google Docs, with web and mobile steps, plus the edge cases that usually cause “it didn’t work” moments.

Why spacing settings matter in Google Docs
Line spacing affects readability and how many lines fit on a page. Letter spacing affects typography, especially for headings, captions, and documents that require a specific look beyond the default font metrics.
Because Google Docs treats these as separate formatting layers, you can adjust one without accidentally changing the other—if you’re applying changes to the right selection or style.

Prerequisites and where Google Docs stores spacing
Before changing anything, make sure you know what you’re formatting: a single word, a paragraph, or the entire document. Spacing is applied to the current selection and/or to a paragraph style, depending on what you use.
- Selection-based formatting: Works when you highlight text (or place the cursor in a paragraph) and change spacing.
- Style-based formatting: Can be more consistent when you use headings and built-in styles (Title, Heading 1, Normal text).
- Print/export: Spacing should carry into PDF, but font substitution (missing fonts) can shift visual results.
Change line spacing in Google Docs (web)
Line spacing is controlled from the paragraph controls. You’ll also see options for space before and after paragraphs, which can make spacing look “off” even when line spacing is correct.
Google Docs for Web (desktop browser)
Use this when you want precise line spacing like Single, 1.5, or an exact custom value.
- Open your document in a desktop browser.
- Select the text you want to change (or click inside a paragraph).
- Go to Format → Line & paragraph spacing.
- Choose one of the presets: Single, 1.15, 1.5, or Double.
- For precise control, click Custom spacing.
- Set values for Line spacing (and optionally Paragraph spacing before/after), then click Apply.
Change letter spacing (tracking) in Google Docs
Letter spacing is separate from line spacing. Google Docs calls it Letter spacing under the Text menu, and you can apply it to selected text.
Google Docs for Web (desktop browser)
Use this for headings, labels, and any text where tracking needs to change.
- Highlight the text you want to change (or click and then select the characters inside the line).
- Go to Format → Text → Letter spacing.
- Select a preset (for example, Loose or Tight) or choose a numeric value if shown in your version.
- Confirm by selecting the value; the change updates immediately.
Gotcha: Letter spacing won’t affect line height the way paragraph settings do. If your text “overlaps,” the issue is usually font size, line spacing, or clipping from a tight paragraph layout—not just tracking.

Apply spacing across the whole document (styles + selection strategy)
If you change line spacing for just one paragraph, the rest of the document keeps its existing formatting. For consistent results, decide whether you want to format a selection or a style.
Strategy A: Format everything by selecting the entire document
This is the fastest approach when you want uniform spacing everywhere.
- Press Ctrl + A (Windows/Chromebook) or Command + A (Mac) to select all text.
- Change line spacing via Format → Line & paragraph spacing.
- Change letter spacing via Format → Text → Letter spacing.
Strategy B: Update paragraph styles for headings and body text
This is the best approach when you want body text to have one spacing and headings to have another.
- Click in a paragraph that uses the style you want to change (for example, Normal text).
- Open Format → Paragraph styles.
- Choose the relevant style (for example, Normal text), then edit its spacing.
- Repeat for other styles like Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.
If you see your changes “not sticking,” it’s often because different parts of the doc use different styles.
Mobile: change line and letter spacing in Google Docs on iPhone, iPad, and Android
The mobile apps have fewer typography controls than the web version. Line spacing is usually available; letter spacing availability and exact labels can vary by app version.

Try these steps in the Google Docs app for iOS.
- Open the document in the Google Docs app.
- Tap the text area and place your cursor in the paragraph (or select text if the UI allows it).
- Tap Edit (or the pencil icon, depending on your interface).
- Open the text formatting menu (often labeled A or Formatting).
- Find Paragraph or Spacing.
- Adjust Line spacing, then apply the change.
Letter spacing on iOS: If you don’t see a Letter spacing option, you may need to do letter spacing on the web in a desktop browser for full control.

Android (Google Docs app)
Use these steps on Android for line spacing, and check whether tracking controls are present.
- Open the document in the Google Docs app.
- Tap inside the paragraph or select the text.
- Tap Edit (or the pencil icon).
- Open formatting controls (often via A / Text tools).
- Go to Paragraph / Spacing.
- Adjust Line spacing to your preferred preset or custom value.
Letter spacing on Android: If the app doesn’t show Letter spacing, do tracking changes on the web version instead.
Spacing options and practical values
Google Docs gives common presets and (for line spacing) a custom option. The exact “look” depends on the font family and size you’re using.
Recommended Free Tools
| Preset | What it typically means | When to use |
|---|---|---|
| Single | Tight vertical spacing between lines | Most readable dense layouts; some schools allow it |
| 1.15 | Slightly more breathing room than Single | Compromise formats; older institutional templates |
| 1.5 | Common “extended” spacing | Essays, drafts, and many submission guidelines |
| Double | Spacious line separation | Requirements that explicitly say double-spaced |
Also check paragraph spacing. Even with Single line spacing, a large After value can create big gaps that look like double spacing.
Troubleshooting: spacing won’t change, keeps reverting, or looks wrong
If your changes don’t show up, it’s usually a selection issue, a style conflict, or a paragraph spacing override (before/after).
Problem: You changed spacing, but only part of the text updates
Your selection likely didn’t include all paragraphs you expected, or different sections use different styles. Press Ctrl + A / Command + A and reapply.
Rank #4
Problem: Line spacing changes, but the document still looks too spread out
Open Format → Line & paragraph spacing and check Paragraph spacing. Set After to 0 pt (or the requirement’s value) if you see unexpected blank gaps.

Large tracking values can squeeze glyphs visually, especially with smaller line heights. Try increasing line spacing slightly or confirm font size and line spacing aren’t set to an unusually tight custom value.
Problem: Your formatting keeps reverting after you paste text
Pasted content often brings its own formatting. Use Google Docs’ paste options (paste without formatting if available) or reapply spacing after the paste.
Problem: Mobile app doesn’t show letter spacing
Some letter-spacing controls may not appear in the mobile UI. If the Letter spacing menu is missing, switch to the web version in a desktop browser and apply tracking there.
Problem: You exported to PDF and spacing changed slightly
Font substitution or different rendering can shift spacing. Confirm the same font is used (and installed/available) and re-export after applying the final settings.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Changing line spacing but ignoring paragraph spacing: After/before values can dominate the visual gap.
- Editing the wrong selection: Clicking a word and changing settings may apply only to that text range, not the whole paragraph.
- Assuming letter spacing changes line height: Tracking affects character positions, not vertical line spacing.
- Using mobile for letter spacing when you need exact control: If your assignment requires precise typography, do tracking on the web version.
- Forgetting style inheritance: If headings and body text are styled differently, “apply to selection” won’t fix everything.
FAQ
Can I set a custom line spacing value in Google Docs?
Yes. Use Format → Line & paragraph spacing → Custom spacing, then enter the Line spacing value your requirement specifies.

Why does my line spacing not match what I see in another document?
Different fonts, font sizes, and paragraph before/after spacing can make “1.5” look different. Also, one document may be using a style, while the other was changed manually per paragraph.
Does letter spacing work with all fonts?
Most fonts respond normally to tracking, but the perceived effect varies. Some fonts have wider metrics or built-in spacing rules that make tight/loose changes less dramatic.
Is letter spacing available on iPhone/iPad or Android?
It may not be available in every version of the mobile apps. If you can’t find Letter spacing in formatting tools, use the web version for tracking.
Will these spacing changes affect comments or headers/footers?
Spacing changes apply to the selected text or style. Headers/footers are their own regions—if you need the same spacing there, you must adjust them separately.
Bottom Line
To change spacing in Google Docs, treat line spacing and letter spacing as separate controls: use Format → Line & paragraph spacing for vertical layout, and Format → Text → Letter spacing for tracking. Apply changes to the correct selection or styles to avoid partial updates and confusing reversion.
If the web UI isn’t an option (or mobile controls are missing), switch to a desktop browser for precise letter spacing, then re-check paragraph before/after values for the final visual match.
