How many wanted stars does GTA 6 have?
The wanted meter shown in the footage reaches six stars, one more than the five-star cap described for GTA V in GamesRadar’s report. This establishes what appears in the pre-release sequence; it does not document how every star is earned or what police do at each level.

GamesRadar’s account of the extended look also reports comments from Rob Nelson, Rockstar North co-studio head, about how a crime becomes known to law enforcement: “The wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law.” In other words, the reported explanation involves a witness or an alarm—not simply committing a crime outside police sight.

What does the heat system track?
In the reported sequence, on-screen indicators show details police know or can recognize about Jason and Lucia. They include the pair’s clothes, faces, vehicle, and the fact that they are together. These cues suggest that escaping immediate view may not be the only concern: the sequence depicts police retaining identifying information as the pursuit develops.

When the protagonists switch vehicles, the vehicle indicator disappears. Nelson also says splitting up can lower police perception. The footage and comments support those as ways to address particular recognition cues in that sequence, not as universal guarantees or a complete account of how recognition resets.
What do the red stars mean?
After direct contact breaks, the report shows the stars changing from white to red and interprets the change as police continuing to search without actively pursuing the protagonists. Rockstar has not fully documented the exact rules behind that visual state in the material reviewed, so it is safest to treat it as a reported search phase rather than a confirmed timer or precise escape condition.

How can you lose the police?
Nelson’s advice for a three-star city pursuit is not to assume a car is the best escape. He says: “If you get three stars in the city, it can sometimes be challenging to get away in a vehicle, unless it’s a very fast vehicle or a sports bike. Your best option is usually to do this – get off the streets and get on foot into the alleys.”
He also describes movement options such as running, leaving a car, jumping, and climbing fences. Taken together, the reported guidance points to using the environment and changing how you move when a vehicle keeps you exposed. It is advice for the described situation, not a guaranteed tactic for every pursuit.

What is still unknown about GTA 6 heat?
The available reporting does not establish how long heat persists, whether each recognition cue has a separate timer, exactly how changing clothes or appearance affects recognition, or how the wanted level escalates star by star. It also does not lay out the complete transition from active pursuit to search. Rockstar’s official GTA VI page provides release and platform information, while its media listing includes trailers and the extended look rather than a written mechanics manual.
Nelson has separately said Rockstar tries to keep mission systems consistent with open-world play: “Anything where a mission can become systemic and it’s a wanted level or robbery system – we try to make it so that it doesn’t feel inconsistent with how the game works in the open world.” That describes design intent; it does not confirm every implementation detail.
