Choose Nintendo Switch 2 if Zelda is the deciding game. Choose PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S if Grand Theft Auto VI is the deciding game. The confirmed platform information does not identify one console that gives you both priorities: Rockstar lists GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, while Nintendo’s enhanced Zelda edition is a Switch 2 product.
That makes the decision less about a universal “best console” and more about which game, ecosystem and play style you value most. Here is what is confirmed, what remains unknown, and how to avoid buying a system on the strength of an unannounced port.

What is confirmed for GTA VI
Launch platforms
Rockstar Games Customer Support, updated August 18, 2026, says: “You can pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” That is the clearest current platform statement. It covers the PS5 family and both Xbox Series models, rather than Nintendo Switch 2 or PC.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsXbox’s official listing says GTA VI is “Available November 19, 2026.” PlayStation’s official blog uses the same date. Unless Rockstar publishes a change, November 19, 2026 is the date to use when planning a launch purchase.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Editions and physical copies
Rockstar’s support information documents Standard and Ultimate Editions. It also states that buyers of a physical copy receive a download code. Check the package description before buying: a box does not necessarily mean the complete game is stored on a disc or cartridge.
What the PS5 feature claim means
PlayStation Blog says that, through Sony Interactive Entertainment’s partnership with Rockstar, GTA VI “will play best on PS5” by using PS5 immersive features for its single-player experience at launch. This is PlayStation’s platform claim, not an independent benchmark. It supports choosing PS5 when those features and the PlayStation ecosystem matter to you, but it does not establish a measured performance victory over Xbox Series X|S.
What is not confirmed
The available official information does not confirm a Switch 2 edition, a Nintendo release or a PC version of GTA VI. A future port is possible in the abstract, but it should be treated as unannounced until Rockstar publishes it. Do not buy Switch 2 today on the assumption that GTA VI will arrive later.

The Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo’s official product page lists The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition with a June 5, 2025 release date. The same page states: “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is only playable on Nintendo Switch 2.” That makes Switch 2 the confirmed destination for the enhanced edition.
Enhancements over the original Switch release
Nintendo identifies several changes in the Switch 2 Edition:
- Higher resolution.
- Improved or smoother frame rates.
- HDR support.
- Faster loading.
- Compatibility with ZELDA NOTES in the Nintendo Switch App.
These are feature improvements, not a promise of a particular frame-rate number in every scene. Your television, HDR setup and viewing distance will affect how noticeable the visual changes are.
Owners of the original Switch version
The original Tears of the Kingdom Switch release remains supported on Switch 2. Nintendo documents an upgrade-pack path for existing owners, so you do not automatically need to repurchase the game merely because you move to the newer console. Confirm the exact upgrade eligibility and account terms in Nintendo’s current store listing before paying; the available information establishes the path, not a universal price for every region or edition.

Portable, tabletop and TV play
Nintendo’s product information describes Switch 2 as supporting handheld, tabletop and TV modes. That flexibility is a major part of the Zelda decision: you can play in handheld mode, set the system down with detached controllers, or use a television without buying a second version of the hardware.

Choose PS5 or Xbox Series X|S for GTA VI
Pick PS5 when its ecosystem and stated features matter
PS5 is the sensible GTA-first choice if you already use PlayStation, own digital purchases there, play with friends on that network, or specifically value the immersive features highlighted by PlayStation Blog. The official “plays best on PS5” wording gives you a reason to prefer it, but it should not be read as laboratory evidence that every aspect of the game will outperform the Xbox versions.
Pick Xbox when your existing Xbox setup matters more
Xbox Series X|S is the sensible choice when your purchases, friends, account history or services are already centered on Xbox. Rockstar’s listing covers the Series X|S family, and Xbox’s official listing supplies the same November 19, 2026 date. Choose the model and storage configuration that fit your existing setup and local availability; the supplied platform information does not establish a complete Series X-versus-PS5 performance ranking.
Do not turn the console choice into a benchmark argument
At present, the official evidence confirms availability and one PlayStation feature claim, not a full side-by-side test of resolution, frame rate, loading or image quality. If two people recommend opposite consoles based on expected performance, they are making a prediction rather than citing a confirmed result. Base the tie-breaker on controller preference, friends, account purchases, services and the features you will actually use.

Choose Switch 2 for Zelda
Why the enhanced edition changes the decision
If Tears of the Kingdom is the game that will justify your purchase, Switch 2 is the straightforward answer. Nintendo explicitly limits the enhanced edition to Switch 2 and lists improvements to resolution, frame rate, HDR, loading and ZELDA NOTES integration. Neither PS5 nor Xbox is a platform for that edition.
When the upgrade path is enough
Existing Switch owners can keep using their original Tears of the Kingdom release on Switch 2 and follow Nintendo’s documented upgrade-pack route. This is useful if you already own the game and want the newer hardware benefits without abandoning your save, account or original purchase. Check the store page for the edition and region attached to your Nintendo account before assuming an upgrade is included.
Portability is a real differentiator
Switch 2’s handheld and tabletop options let Zelda travel with you, while TV mode covers conventional living-room play. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S do not provide Nintendo’s Switch-style handheld, tabletop and TV combination for this game. If you regularly play away from a television, that feature can outweigh differences that are difficult to judge from specifications alone.

If you want both GTA VI and Zelda
The most reliable plan
Plan on two systems: Switch 2 for the enhanced Zelda edition and PS5 or Xbox Series X|S for GTA VI. This is the only approach that follows the confirmed platform information without relying on rumors.
The wait-and-see plan
If buying two consoles is not practical, wait for an official Rockstar announcement before choosing Switch 2 as a GTA machine. A later port could change the calculation, but no such release is confirmed in the available information. Similarly, there is no confirmed PS5 or Xbox version of Nintendo’s enhanced Tears of the Kingdom edition.
The compromise plan
Buy the console for the title you will play most during the next year, then reassess after GTA VI launches or after Rockstar announces additional platforms. This avoids paying today for a hypothetical release and lets you judge real availability, bundles and regional pricing rather than predictions.
Buying checklist
- Name your deciding game. Write down whether GTA VI or the enhanced Tears of the Kingdom experience is the reason for the purchase. If the answer is GTA VI, remove Switch 2 from the launch-platform shortlist. If the answer is enhanced Zelda, remove PS5 and Xbox from that shortlist.
- Verify the official listing. For GTA VI, look for Rockstar’s current platform statement and the November 19, 2026 listing on the platform store. For Zelda, confirm that the product is the Switch 2 Edition rather than only the original Switch release.
- Check the edition and delivery format. Rockstar documents Standard and Ultimate Editions and says physical GTA VI buyers receive a download code. Read the exact box or store description before assuming a physical purchase contains all game data.
- Match the system to your existing account. Review where your digital games, friends and preferred services already live. Moving ecosystems can cost more in duplicate purchases than a small hardware-price difference.
- Decide whether portability is essential. If handheld or tabletop play is a requirement, Switch 2 is the only option in this comparison with Nintendo’s documented three-mode format.
- Check local price, stock and bundle terms at checkout. Hardware prices and availability vary by country, retailer and bundle. No single current regional price winner is established here, so use the listing in your market rather than an old headline figure.
- Confirm display compatibility for Zelda improvements. HDR and higher resolution are only useful if your television or monitor supports the relevant features. Treat them as capabilities, not guaranteed visual changes on every screen.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming Switch 2 will get GTA VI
There is no confirmed Switch 2 GTA VI announcement in the available official information. Buy Switch 2 for its confirmed Zelda and Nintendo features, not for a rumored Rockstar port.
Assuming “plays best on PS5” is an independent test
The phrase comes from PlayStation Blog and describes Sony’s platform position. It is not a published comparative benchmark. Use it as one preference signal alongside your ecosystem and feature priorities.
Confusing the original game with the enhanced edition
The original Tears of the Kingdom Switch release works on Switch 2, while the Switch 2 Edition is a separate enhanced product. Read the title carefully so you know whether you are buying the base release, an upgrade path or the complete enhanced edition.
Buying by console price alone
A low sticker price can disappear if you must repurchase games, replace accessories or leave the network where your friends play. Because current prices and subscription totals are region-specific and not established here, calculate the first-year cost using your own accounts and local listings.
Expecting one machine to cover both priorities
The confirmed platform split is the central constraint: GTA VI is listed for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, while the enhanced Zelda edition is Switch 2-only. Treat a single-console solution as a future possibility, not a current fact.
Quick Recap
Bottom line by buyer type
- GTA-first: Buy PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Choose PS5 for its stated immersive-feature focus and PlayStation ecosystem; choose Xbox when your purchases, friends and services are already there.
- Zelda-first: Buy Nintendo Switch 2. It is the confirmed home of the enhanced Tears of the Kingdom edition and the only option here with handheld, tabletop and TV play.
- Committed to both: Budget for two systems or wait for Rockstar to announce another platform. Do not make the decision on an unannounced Switch 2 or PC version.
- Unsure: Delay the purchase until your deciding game is clear, then verify the current regional price, stock, edition and delivery format before ordering.
