GTA V’s open world is a documented mix of city streets, countryside, mountains, coastline, recreation and vehicle activities. GTA VI is confirmed to return to modern Vice City in the wider state of Leonida, with Jason and Lucia at its center—but Rockstar’s published material does not establish that its map will be bigger, denser or more interactive. The clearest comparison is between what GTA V demonstrably offers and what Rockstar has actually announced for GTA VI; the latter’s detailed activities and world systems remain to be judged.
GTA 6 vs. GTA 5 map: What is confirmed?
GTA V: Los Santos and Blaine County
Rockstar’s May 2013 preview describes Los Santos as a metropolis surrounded by the countryside of Blaine County. The setting ranges from mountains and city streets to the ocean floor, and Rockstar said the world was open from the beginning. These are historical descriptions of GTA V’s design, not a guarantee that every activity or detail appears identically in every later edition.

GTA VI: Vice City in Leonida
Rockstar’s official GTA VI page places the game in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. That confirms the setting, but not the final map’s dimensions or how much of it players can freely explore. The available official descriptions do not provide a measured comparison with GTA V.
So, will GTA 6 be bigger than GTA 5? That is not established by the published information. Map size alone would not settle the comparison in any case: how locations connect, how freely players can travel between them, and what the world lets them do are also important.

What can you do in GTA 5’s open world?
Rockstar’s GTA V preview documents a broad range of diversions beyond the story. Players can pick up hitchhikers, try stunt jumps and flying challenges, play golf and tennis, do yoga, cycle, parachute, customize vehicles and race. The documented range combines outdoor traversal, recreation and vehicle-focused activities.
GTA V also has a three-protagonist story and a separate online experience. Rockstar’s current GTA V store listing describes an interwoven story about dangerous heists, while its official GTA Online page presents Online as an evolving shared world with missions, jobs, races and free-roam activities. Story Mode and GTA Online are distinct parts of the GTA V experience; Online’s activity set has evolved over time.

What has Rockstar confirmed about GTA VI’s story and play format?
Jason and Lucia lead the published premise
Rockstar’s GTA VI page centers the story on Jason and Lucia, who are caught in a criminal conspiracy. This is a new central pair compared with GTA V’s Franklin, Michael and Trevor, whom Rockstar identified as playable protagonists with distinct lives and skillsets.

In its June 2026 preorder announcement, Rockstar described GTA VI as a single-player experience. That describes the announced launch game; it does not determine whether Rockstar might announce a separate online component later. The official materials cited here do not specify a GTA VI online mode, player count or online activity list.

What GTA VI’s open-world experience still needs to prove
Rockstar has not published a detailed GTA VI activity list or enough comparable world-system detail to show how its open world stacks up against GTA V. Trailers and setting descriptions establish a sense of place, but they do not by themselves confirm particular side activities, enterable buildings, NPC routines or simulation features.
After release, the useful comparison will be practical: how varied the locations feel, how freely players can traverse them, what diversions are available, how the world reacts to player actions, and whether any online offering is distinct from the single-player game. Until those details are documented, claims that GTA VI is larger or deeper should be treated as speculation.

GTA VI release date, platforms and physical packaging
As of Rockstar’s June 2026 preorder announcement, the listed release date is November 19, 2026, and the listed platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar says the physical box contains a download code rather than a disc. That distinction matters if by “physical edition” you mean a playable game disc: the announced packaging does not include one.
Rockstar’s release announcement, signed by Rockstar Games, said additional time would allow the company to finish the game with its expected level of polish. That explains the stated delay in Rockstar’s own words; it does not provide evidence about map scale or specific gameplay systems.
