Rockstar’s official materials reviewed as of October 7, 2026 describe Grand Theft Auto VI as a single-player experience and do not confirm a separate online mode, cross-play, or how friends could join each other. What Rockstar has confirmed about GTA 6
In its June 24, 2026 pre-order announcement, Rockstar said: “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single player experience, coming November 19 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” Rockstar’s announcement is the clearest official statement about the game’s format, scheduled date, and platforms.

Rockstar’s official GTA VI page also lists November 19, 2026, and the two console platforms. Because that date is still in the future as of October 7, it is a scheduled release date, not a confirmation that the game is already available.

No separate GTA 6 Online mode is confirmed in the Rockstar announcements and support information reviewed. Rockstar describes GTA VI as a single-player experience; that statement does not establish whether a separate online mode will arrive later. Its timing, availability, and relationship to the main game remain unannounced in those sources.

Those materials also do not confirm session or invitation systems, matchmaking, player limits, online progression, or any requirements for playing online. Treat claims about these features as unverified unless Rockstar announces them.
Can friends on PS5 and Xbox play together?
Rockstar lists GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but the reviewed official sources do not say whether the game will support cross-play. Having the same game available on both platforms does not, by itself, confirm that players can join one another across them. Even same-platform friend-play details are not established in the sources reviewed.

Rockstar Support lists the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and says the physical version comes as a download code in a box, with no disc. Buyers of that package should expect to download the game rather than install it from a disc. See Rockstar Support’s platforms, editions, and versions information, last updated August 18, 2026.

What to check before making plans with friends
- Look for a Rockstar announcement confirming whether a separate online mode exists and when it will be available.
- Check for explicit cross-play details before choosing different console platforms with friends.
- Wait for official information about invitations, sessions, and any online access requirements before assuming how a group can play together.
