Why reactions to the visuals are mixed
In a September 7, 2026 interview with TechRadar, former Rockstar developer Mike York praised the footage’s visual clarity and lighting, and pointed to lifelike details such as individual hair movement. He also described some facial animation as rough. Those are York’s assessments of the showcase, not a consensus, a measured graphics test, or proof of a change between builds. Did GTA 6’s graphics change over three years?
The cited coverage does not identify a specific earlier build or clip for a three-year comparison, nor does it establish that graphics got worse. A reaction to different-looking images can prompt a useful question, but it cannot by itself show that the game was downgraded: the scenes, footage sources, and capture conditions may differ.

For a meaningful side-by-side, the comparison needs the original source and date for each clip, the platform and build if known, and equivalent scenes and camera conditions. It should also disclose time of day, weather, motion, compression, and any available resolution or performance settings. Shadows, reflections, foliage, animation, and image sharpness can be described as visible details; calling a change a “downgrade” requires evidence that the material is comparable and that a technical change occurred.

What to conclude from the comparison claim
The official showcase and York’s mixed reaction support a narrower conclusion: the new footage contains details he praised as well as facial animation he considered rough. They do not verify that GTA 6 looks worse than it did three years earlier. Until earlier footage is identified and compared under documented, comparable conditions, the alleged graphics change should be treated as unproven.
