Use GSTR-2B as your principal monthly statement when checking input tax credit (ITC) for GSTR-3B: the GST portal directs taxpayers to use it to take appropriate credit in the relevant GSTR-3B sections. Use GSTR-2A as a supporting view of inward-supply details reported by suppliers. Neither statement is a legal approval of every amount it displays; verify the documents and applicable eligibility conditions, and account separately for situations the statement does not capture.
GSTR-2A vs GSTR-2B at a glance
| Question | GSTR-2A | GSTR-2B |
|---|---|---|
| What is its role? | An inward-supply view that makes supplier-reported outward-supply details available to the recipient under Rule 60. CBIC, CGST Rules | A monthly, auto-drafted ITC statement. The GST portal says to use it when taking appropriate ITC in GSTR-3B. GST portal, Returns FAQ |
| Does it change during a tax period? | The cited official material establishes its supplier-detail role but does not establish a refresh schedule here. | Described by the portal as static for the relevant monthly period. GST portal, Returns FAQ |
| What information is identified? | Supplier-reported outward-supply details made available to the recipient. | Documents filed by suppliers and the Input Service Distributor; the portal FAQ also identifies import-of-goods information sourced from ICEGATE. GST portal, Returns FAQ |
| Does the statement alone establish eligibility? | No. Check the document and the applicable ITC conditions. | No. The portal says availability is subject to eligibility and tells taxpayers to self-assess other circumstances that may not appear in the statement. GST portal, Returns FAQ |
How to use the statements before filing GSTR-3B
- Start with GSTR-2B for the period. Use it as the main statement for checking the ITC you plan to report in GSTR-3B, in line with the GST portal’s guidance. GST portal, Returns FAQ
- Compare the statement with your purchase and accounting records. Check relevant invoices and debit notes against the details shown; investigate missing, unexpected or inconsistent entries rather than treating a statement match as conclusive.
- Check legal eligibility separately. Confirm that the document and the transaction satisfy the conditions that apply to the credit. Rule 36 includes document-particulars requirements and provisions concerning supplier-furnished information communicated in GSTR-2B. CBIC, amended CGST Rules
- Use GSTR-2A as a supporting inward-supply view. It can help you review supplier-reported details available to you, but it is not the portal’s designated substitute for GSTR-2B in the GSTR-3B ITC workflow. CBIC, CGST Rules GST portal, Returns FAQ
- Self-assess items not captured in GSTR-2B. The portal cautions that there may be cases where credit is unavailable even though the system has not generated that information in GSTR-2B; take or reverse credit in GSTR-3B as appropriate. GST portal, Returns FAQ
What GSTR-2B does—and does not—tell you
GSTR-2B is a read-only, static monthly statement, not a complete determination of your entitlement to credit. “Available” in the statement is an indicator to assess, not unconditional legal approval. The GST portal says taxpayers may avail credit based on ITC indicated in GSTR-2B subject to availability and eligibility, while also requiring self-assessment of circumstances the system statement may not cover. Rule 36 also makes document particulars and supplier-furnished information relevant to ITC claims. The CBIC-hosted amended rules record replacement of the older Rule 36(4) wording by Notification 40/2021-CT, effective 1 January 2022. Do not rely on older summaries of a 5% provisional-credit allowance as if they state current law; consult the applicable current rule text for the relevant claim. CBIC, amended CGST Rules
