TallyPrime has a dedicated GSTR-2A Reconciliation report that compares purchase vouchers in your books with supplier-reported data on the GST Portal. You can download GSTR-2A directly through TallyPrime or import a GST Portal Excel/JSON file, then investigate mismatches, return-period differences, portal-only invoices and potential matches.
Use reconciliation as an exception-control process—not as automatic proof that an invoice is eligible for input tax credit (ITC). GST eligibility still depends on the invoice, receipt of goods or services, statutory conditions, time limits and the applicable IMS/GSTR-2B workflow.

What GSTR-2A reconciliation means
GSTR-2A is the recipient’s view-only inward-supply statement. It is populated from supplier uploads and amendments, including invoice, debit-note and credit-note details reported through mechanisms such as GSTR-1 or IFF. Because suppliers can upload or amend data after you download it, GSTR-2A is dynamic rather than a fixed monthly statement. The GSTN offline-tool documentation describes it as a view-only return containing supplier-uploaded invoice details: GSTN Returns Offline Tool.
Your TallyPrime purchase register is a separate record. Reconciliation compares the two sources so you can find omitted entries, incorrect GSTINs, document-number or tax-value errors, late supplier reporting and wrong voucher classifications.
GSTR-2A, GSTR-2B and IMS: do not confuse them
| Item | What it does | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| GSTR-2A | Dynamic, continuously updated, view-only statement of supplier-reported inward supplies. | Compare portal transactions with TallyPrime books and monitor supplier reporting. |
| GSTR-2B | Period-based statement generated under GST system rules for ITC review. | Use with supporting documents and current GST rules when preparing ITC decisions. |
| IMS | GST Portal workflow for accepting, rejecting or keeping eligible supplier records pending. | Review records at Dashboard > Services > Returns > Invoice Management System (IMS) Dashboard. |
GSTN says GSTR-2A continues to be generated even though IMS and GSTR-2B are now important to the ITC workflow. The IMS FAQ explains that records with no action are treated as accepted when GSTR-2B is generated; accepted records flow to ITC Available, rejected records do not flow to GSTR-3B, and pending records remain outside GSTR-2B until the applicable action or time limit: GSTN IMS FAQ.
Prepare before you reconcile
- Configure the active GST registration in the TallyPrime company.
- Enable GST and record purchases with correct tax details.
- Check supplier GSTIN/UIN, invoice and note numbers, dates, tax amounts and document types.
- Have GST Portal credentials and access to the registered mobile number for OTP.
- Select the correct financial year, return period and GST registration.
- Keep the supplier invoices, debit notes, credit notes, receipt evidence and payment records available.
- Back up company data before bulk corrections.
- For manual import, obtain the GSTR-2A download in the Excel or JSON format expected by TallyPrime.
Download GSTR-2A directly in TallyPrime
- Open the relevant company.
- Press Alt+Z, choose All GST Options, then select Download GST Returns. In TallyPrime 4.1 or earlier, use Alt+Z > Download GST Returns.
- Press C to configure the download.
- Set Return Type to GSTR-2A and select the return period.
- Press D to download.
- Enter the GST Username and OTP when prompted.
- Open the GSTR-2A Reconciliation report.
The documented direct-download session remains valid for six hours. Downloading again replaces the existing downloaded version for that return data. The release-specific path and download behavior are documented by TallyHelp.
If direct download does not work
- Confirm the selected company and GST registration.
- Recheck GST Portal credentials and OTP access.
- Verify connectivity and TallyPrime connected-services configuration.
- Check the return period and whether portal data exists for it.
- Download the file from the GST Portal and use manual import instead.
- Do not assume an empty result proves that no supplier uploaded invoices; first verify the GSTIN, period and portal record.
Import GSTR-2A manually
- Press Alt+O and select GST Returns.
- On the Import GST Returns screen, select the GST registration.
- Set Return Type to GSTR-2A.
- Choose the folder containing the downloaded Excel or JSON file, then select the file.
- Press Ctrl+A to accept.
- Review the Import Summary, including processed, imported and failed transactions.
Failed records can result from a wrong registration or return type, an incomplete or corrupted file, a file for another GSTIN or period, an altered format or duplicate/previously imported data. Check the source file and selection details before retrying; duplicate handling can vary by release and configuration.
Open and control the reconciliation report
- Press Alt+G.
- Type GSTR-2A Reconciliation.
- Select the report.
Pending activities are highlighted in amber and portal values in blue. Return View mirrors GSTR-2A sections for comparison. These documented controls help you investigate records:
| Purpose | Shortcut |
|---|---|
| Select company or GST registration | F3 — Company/Tax Registration |
| Change basis of values | Ctrl+B |
| Change statistics or voucher view | Ctrl+H |
| Configure potential matches and extra columns | F12 |
| Set a transaction as reconciled | Alt+S — Set GST Status |
| Set GST return effective date | Alt+L |
| View portal details | Alt+R — GST Portal View |
| Choose another voucher type | Alt+F10 |
| Copy portal document number and date | Alt+W |
With multiple registrations, the report is consolidated by default. Press F3 and filter to the intended registration before posting any correction; otherwise one GSTIN’s invoice can be compared with another’s books.

Reconciled
The comparison criteria accepted by TallyPrime match. Still verify the supplier GSTIN, document type, tax amount, place of supply, accounting period, duplicate status and ITC eligibility before treating the transaction as ready for tax review.

Mismatched
Book and portal GST details differ, such as voucher number or tax amount.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Drill down from Mismatched.
- Use F12 to show fields such as invoice type or reverse-charge information.
- Correct the TallyPrime voucher if your books are wrong.
- Ask the supplier to amend its filing if portal data is wrong.
- Use Alt+S > Set GST Status > Reconciled only for a verified minor difference, such as rounding, after confirming its tax treatment.
Never mark every mismatch as reconciled simply to clear the report. A small difference can indicate a rate, taxable-value, note or classification error.
Mismatch in Return Period
The book entry and supplier data fall in different GST reporting periods. This can happen after late filing, an amendment or a note reported later.
- Drill down from Mismatch in Return Period.
- Select the transaction and press Alt+L — Set Effective Date.
- Set the GST Return Effective Date to the supplier’s applicable return period.
- Recheck the status.
Do not change the commercial voucher date merely to force a match. Correct the source transaction only when the invoice itself is wrong.
Available Only on Portal
The supplier-reported transaction has no corresponding book entry.
- Drill down from Available Only on Portal.
- Press Alt+R — GST Portal View and inspect GSTIN, number, date, taxable value, tax and place of supply.
- Search purchase, expense, inventory and fixed-asset records.
- Record it in TallyPrime only when the underlying purchase is genuine and supported.
- Contact the supplier if it is unrecognised or incorrect.
Possible causes include an omitted purchase, wrong recipient GSTIN, duplicate or incorrect supplier upload, cancelled transaction, different voucher type, or confusion with RCM/import treatment. A portal-only record is not permission to book an invoice or claim ITC.

Potential Matches
TallyPrime found substantial agreement but one important field differs. Examples include a different section, party GSTIN/UIN or document number. Review the original document and correct the appropriate source rather than accepting the match automatically.
Resolve common potential matches
Section mismatch
For example, books show B2B while the portal shows CDNR.
- Open Potential Matches (Excluding Section).
- Press Alt+F10 — Other Vouchers and select the correct type, such as Credit Note.
- Enable Provide GST Details.
- Enter the reason, supplier note number and date, then press Ctrl+A.
GSTIN/UIN mismatch
- Open Potential Matches (Excluding Party GSTIN/UIN).
- Press Ctrl+Enter on the party name.
- Open the party master and correct GSTIN/UIN under Party Details.
- Press Ctrl+A to save.
Check every character: a letter “O” and zero are common typing mistakes. Verify that the GSTIN belongs to the same registration and transaction.

If books contain MC/233 and the verified portal record contains MC/2333, select the transaction, press Alt+W — Copy Doc No. & Date, and confirm with Enter. In TallyPrime 4.1 or earlier, open the voucher and update the number manually. If the portal number is wrong, request supplier correction instead of overwriting reliable books.
Automatic reconciliation settings
TallyPrime provides configuration categories for taxable-amount differences, round-off values and TDS/TCS amounts. These are matching controls, not blanket permission to ignore tax discrepancies. Review the configured basis and investigate the source of every difference; do not assume a tolerance is appropriate for a tax-rate, eligibility or classification error.
Common problems and the correct response
“The invoice is in GSTR-2A but I never purchased it”
Open portal details with Alt+R, verify the supplier GSTIN, number, date, value and place of supply, then search all purchase, expense, inventory and asset records. Ask the supplier to investigate a wrong-GSTIN upload. Do not book or claim the invoice until it is verified.
“My invoice is in the books but not in GSTR-2A”
The supplier may not have filed, may have used the wrong GSTIN or number, may report it in a later period or use another document route. Preserve the invoice and receipt evidence, ask the supplier to check GSTR-1/IFF, and monitor later GSTR-2A and the applicable GSTR-2B. Do not alter the purchase entry merely to make it match.

“A credit note does not match”
Check voucher type, note number, date, reason, original-invoice reference, portal section and whether the record is an amendment. If the section is wrong in the books, use the voucher-type workflow under Alt+F10 and enter the required GST details.
“The report is empty”
Verify the GSTIN, company, financial year, return period, supplier filing status and whether you are viewing GSTR-2A rather than another GST statement. An empty result is not conclusive until those selections and portal availability are checked.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does reconciliation confirm ITC eligibility?
No. A “reconciled” status means the selected book and portal comparison criteria agree; it does not decide whether credit is legally available. Before claiming ITC, review the tax invoice, receipt of goods or services, supplier and recipient details, place of supply, payment conditions, blocked-credit rules, reverse charge, imports, amendments, time limits and any IMS/GSTR-2B action. Escalate disputed, blocked, amended, reverse-charge, import or potentially time-barred cases to a qualified GST professional.
A practical monthly control routine
- Back up TallyPrime company data.
- Download the latest relevant GSTR-2A data or retain the source file used for manual import.
- Filter the report by GST registration.
- Review portal-only records against invoices, receipts and ledgers.
- Resolve mismatches and potential matches; correct books only when supported.
- Send a supplier-wise discrepancy list for wrong or missing uploads.
- Review credit and debit notes separately.
- Set effective dates for genuine period differences rather than changing commercial dates.
- Compare the results with the applicable GSTR-2B and IMS workflow before ITC decisions.
- Retain invoices, correspondence, corrections and reconciliation reports as an audit trail.
TallyPrime or a spreadsheet?
| Approach | Strengths | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| TallyPrime report | Uses vouchers and ledgers already maintained; provides status sections, drill-downs and release-specific correction shortcuts. | Depends on accurate masters, voucher data, GST configuration and TallyPrime access. |
| Spreadsheet review | Flexible for ad hoc analysis, supplier follow-up and businesses whose books are in another system. | Manual matching can omit or duplicate invoices and has a weaker link to accounting vouchers and audit history. |
For books maintained in TallyPrime, use its report as the primary accounting reconciliation and a spreadsheet only as a supplementary exception list.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reconcile multiple GST registrations in one company?
Yes. TallyPrime shows consolidated data by default; press F3 (Company/Tax Registration) to select the intended registration before reviewing or correcting transactions.
Can I import GSTR-2A without connecting TallyPrime to the GST Portal?
Yes. Download the GSTR-2A file from the GST Portal and import it through Alt+O > GST Returns, selecting the registration, GSTR-2A and the Excel or JSON file.
Should I use GSTR-2A or GSTR-2B for ITC review?
Use GSTR-2A in TallyPrime to compare supplier data with books. Use the applicable GSTR-2B and IMS process, supporting documents and GST rules for the ITC decision.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What should I do when the supplier has not uploaded my invoice?
Keep the tax invoice and receipt evidence, ask the supplier to check GSTR-1 or IFF, monitor later statements and obtain professional advice on the period-specific ITC treatment. Do not change the book entry solely to create a match.
The Bottom Line
TallyPrime’s GSTR-2A Reconciliation report is most valuable when you use it to investigate exceptions: filter the right GSTIN, verify portal-only records, correct genuine book or master-data errors, obtain supplier amendments and document every decision. Reconciliation improves control, but it does not replace the GST Portal’s GSTR-2B/IMS workflow or the legal checks required before claiming ITC.
