Could small e-commerce sellers sell nationwide with one GST registration?
The Economic Times reported on October 5, 2026, that the GST Council was expected to consider a proposal allowing small sellers on e-commerce platforms to sell across India with one registered address. That was reported as an item for Council consideration—not as an approved change. The coverage reviewed by October 7 did not establish a Council decision, final notification, eligibility rules or start date. Sellers should not treat the proposal as a process they can already use.

How the reported warehouse arrangement would work
Under the reported proposal, a seller could use an e-commerce platform’s warehouse as its place of business in states where the seller had no premises of its own. The seller would still maintain a physical presence in one state for physical address verification and Aadhaar authentication. These are reported outline details, not final rules. The Economic Times’ October 5 report attributed the proposal to people familiar with what the Council was expected to consider.
Possible responsibilities for platforms
The same report described possible platform duties: naming a person responsible for seller information, providing verified seller data, and reporting changes such as a seller joining or leaving the platform or changes to seller particulars. These should not be read as newly operative obligations; the final Council decision and any notification would determine what platforms must do.
