Recommended Free Tools
Groundtruth is presented as a free, offline ledger for small microgreens growers who want to connect tray work, customer orders, and money records without moving their farm data to a cloud service. It may suit a solo grower replacing a spreadsheet, but it is an early Windows-only project: the installer is unsigned, the design is for one machine and one user, and the project says its full dead-laptop recovery drill has not been completed end to end.
What Groundtruth records
Groundtruth’s publisher describes it as a farm ledger for growers who sow trays, harvest by weight, sell to customers, and want a single record of operations and finances. Its documented workflow spans both production and sales rather than treating a harvest log as the whole business. The official repository describes the application and its intended audience.

- Production and demand: trays, venues, and standing orders.
- Customer activity: samples, wholesale orders, and payment links.
- Money: records of money in and money out.
- Farm condition: health and integrity checks.
The README says the software should surface late, short, or broken conditions rather than guess. That is a stated design goal, not an independently verified assessment of how well the application detects those cases.
What “local-first” means in practice
The publisher says Groundtruth needs no account, subscription, or cloud service, and that farm data stays on the user’s computer unless exported. A farm folder contains the database, an append-only event log, receipt files, and automatic snapshots. This is a local-storage model, not a promise that data is automatically available on another device or protected from loss if the computer fails.
#1 Best Overall
- Features various microgreens and sprouts like pea, sunflower, broccoli, radish, and clover.
- Perfect for microgreens growers, healthy eaters, and plant lovers who enjoy homegrown food.
- Hardcover journal with 240 line-ruled pages (120 sheets)
- Built-in elastic closure and ribbon bookmark
- Includes an expandable inner storage pocket and a pen holder
That distinction matters when replacing a spreadsheet. A spreadsheet stored in a synced drive may be reachable from several devices; Groundtruth’s described workflow centers on a local farm folder. Anyone choosing it should decide where that folder will be backed up and how exports or copies will be kept current.
Windows installation and project maturity
The release described by the publisher targets Windows x64. The installer is intended for a normal user account and does not require administrator permission, but it is unsigned, so Windows may show a warning. That warning and the need to assess whether to proceed are meaningful friction for people who are not comfortable installing unsigned software. These details come from the project’s installation guidance, not independent security testing.
For building from source, the repository lists Windows, Node.js, Rust, Visual Studio Build Tools with the C++ desktop workload, and WebView2 as requirements. It says there is no Mac or Linux build.
Rank #2
- Showcases vibrant microgreens and sprouts for healthy plant based foodies.
- Ideal for home gardeners cultivating fresh organic sprouts and healthy greens.
- Hardcover journal with 240 line-ruled pages (120 sheets)
- Built-in elastic closure and ribbon bookmark
- Includes an expandable inner storage pocket and a pen holder
The project identifies itself as early 0.1.x and designed for one machine and one user. Its publisher reports that the integrity core is built and tested, but says the complete dead-laptop recovery drill has been documented and not run end to end. After moving a farm to another machine, the project advises retaining the old machine or a USB copy. It also warns that an upgrade may change the farm file so an older build refuses to open it; its README recommends copying the farm folder before upgrading. These are project statements, not independent verification of recovery or upgrade behavior.
Groundtruth or a browser-based tracker?
Microgreen Tracker by On The Grow is a browser-based alternative with a different emphasis. Its official product page describes crop and variety guidance, tray stages, schedule calculations, watering reminders, succession planting, harvest and yield logs, inventory, customer orders, and export. The page says signed-in devices sync and currently lists a seven-day trial followed by subscriptions with capacity and seat tiers; plan details can change.

Groundtruth repository | Includes production guidance and scheduling features alongside harvest, inventory, and customer-order tracking, as described by its publisher. Microgreen Tracker |

Groundtruth’s publisher says it is not intended for multi-user teams, phone-first workflows, cloud sync, general farm ERP, CRM, or use as an accounting package. A solo grower prioritizing a local business ledger may therefore weigh it differently from a team seeking shared access and production scheduling. The available descriptions establish different feature priorities, not that either product is universally better.

Is it a spreadsheet replacement for your microgreens farm?
Groundtruth is worth considering if your spreadsheet is mainly a record of tray activity, orders, and money, and you are comfortable with a Windows-only, single-user tool and local backup responsibilities. Its documented scope is aimed at tying those records together in one farm folder.

Before migrating, verify that the records you rely on—such as current orders, receipts, and historical notes—can be represented and exported in a way that works for your farm. The available product description does not establish a spreadsheet-import workflow.
Where 1020 propagation trays fit
For growers whose operation centers on standard tray workflows, Virginia Cooperative Extension’s 2026-indexed publication on microgreen production lists 1020 propagation trays among microgreens production systems. That makes 1020 propagation trays for microgreens a relevant category-level production consideration, not a requirement imposed by Groundtruth; the software is described around tray production generally.
