TechCrunch reported on October 1, 2026, citing TIME and an unnamed source, that Donald Trump consulted Elon Musk’s chatbot Grok in December 2025 about how Venezuelans might react to Nicolás Maduro’s capture. The account does not include a public transcript and does not establish that Grok recommended, or caused, the January 3, 2026 U.S. operation.

What did Trump reportedly ask Grok?

According to TechCrunch’s summary of TIME’s reporting, Trump met Musk in December 2025 and “spent hours” talking to Grok. One reported question concerned how Venezuelans would respond if their president were captured. The account characterizes Grok’s response as encouraging, but does not publish the chatbot’s exact words.

That distinction matters: readers can know what the question was reportedly about, but cannot check the answer against a transcript. The exchange is attributed to an unnamed source in the reporting, not established through a publicly available conversation log.

Did Grok tell Trump to capture Maduro, or influence the operation?

The available account does not show that Grok advised Trump to order an operation or urged him to capture Maduro. It reports a question about Venezuelan reaction and characterizes the response as encouraging. Asking a chatbot about a possible public reaction is not, by itself, evidence that the chatbot shaped the decision.

So the careful answer is: Trump reportedly consulted Grok before the operation, but the reporting does not demonstrate that Grok caused or materially influenced it. Calling the exchange a confirmed instruction to “kidnap” Maduro would go beyond what the account establishes.

How does the reported conversation fit the timeline?

Date What was reported
2025, before the reported consultation The Associated Press reported that the U.S. reward for information leading to Maduro’s arrest or conviction had been raised to $50 million, and that a U.S.-linked effort to recruit Maduro’s pilot had failed.
December 2025 Trump reportedly met Musk and asked Grok about Venezuelans’ likely reaction to Maduro’s possible capture, according to the account summarized by TechCrunch.
January 3, 2026 TIME reported that U.S. forces carried out large-scale strikes and captured Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. TIME described it as the largest U.S. military operation in Latin America since the 1989 invasion of Panama.

TIME’s January 8 explainer described the administration’s stated rationales as including an anti-drug campaign, while also reporting Trump’s discussion of regime change, foreign adversaries, and repairing or controlling Venezuela’s oil industry. Those competing themes form part of the broader context; they do not establish what prompted the operation.

Why did the operation draw international criticism?

In reactions reported by TIME after January 3, Russia and China condemned or expressed alarm about the use of force. The United Nations warned of dangerous implications and emphasized the UN Charter; its statement called the developments “a dangerous precedent.” Officials from the EU, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Denmark, and Spain called for restraint, legality, or respect for sovereignty.

The international response focused on the use of force, sovereignty, and international law. It is relevant context for the reported Grok exchange, but does not verify the chatbot’s answer or explain the decision-making behind the operation.
