Gravity Seems Holographic. What Does That Mean for Reality?

Holography in gravity means equivalent bulk and boundary descriptions—not a universe projected onto a screen. AdS/CFT is a powerful example, but its reach to our cosmos is unproven.

“Holographic” does not mean that the world is a picture projected onto a cosmic screen. In physics, it describes a possible equivalence: a theory with gravity in a higher-dimensional region can have a complete description in terms of a quantum theory on a lower-dimensional boundary. The clearest established example is AdS/CFT, but it does not show that our universe is a hologram or a simulation.

What does “holographic” mean in physics?

A literal optical hologram uses information recorded on a surface to reconstruct an image that appears three-dimensional. A holographic duality is a different, mathematical idea: two theories can describe the same physical system in different ways. In the kind of duality relevant to gravity, one description has a higher-dimensional “bulk” with gravity; the other is a lower-dimensional quantum theory defined at its boundary.

The boundary is not necessarily a screen sitting somewhere in space. It is part of the mathematical setup of the theory, and the exact meaning of the correspondence depends on the theory and its boundary conditions. The 2022 review Holographic spacetime, black holes and quantum error correcting codes describes AdS/CFT as the most well-understood example of this kind of holographic emergence.

Why did black holes suggest an area-based description?

Black-hole entropy follows the horizon’s area

The Bekenstein–Hawking formula assigns a black hole entropy proportional to the area of its event horizon: in conventional units, SBH = A/(4lP2), where A is the horizon area and lP is the Planck length. The “one quarter” is a coefficient in the formula. The striking feature is that the entropy scales with area, rather than with the volume enclosed by the horizon.

Gravity changes the usual volume-counting intuition

In ordinary local field-theory reasoning, adding more volume seems to allow more independent degrees of freedom, so the number of possible states might be expected to grow with volume. But gravity places a limit on that reasoning: pack enough energy into a region and it can collapse into a black hole. A semiclassical argument therefore motivates an area-sized gravitational limit on how much information a region can hold, rather than an unlimited count of independent bulk cells.

This is an important clue, not a general proof that every region of every spacetime has a fully defined boundary theory. The area-law argument motivates the holographic principle; it does not, on its own, construct the dual description.

What does AdS/CFT actually establish?

AdS/CFT relates a gravitational theory in a spacetime that approaches anti-de Sitter (AdS) geometry to a conformal field theory (CFT) on its lower-dimensional boundary. “Dual” means the two descriptions encode the same physical system, not that one is merely a picture of the other. This gives the holographic idea a concrete and powerful setting, under appropriate asymptotic boundary conditions.

Its scope matters. AdS/CFT is a well-developed example in asymptotically AdS settings; the cited review does not establish it as a complete description of the cosmological spacetime we observe. So the result is evidence that gravity and spacetime can be encoded in a lower-dimensional theory in a particular framework—not proof that our universe has that same description.

How can entanglement help build a picture of spacetime?

In holographic theories, extremal surfaces provide a connection between entanglement in the boundary theory and regions in the bulk. Related ideas, including entanglement-wedge reconstruction, describe how information about a bulk region can be recovered from the boundary theory. Quantum-error-correction concepts help explain why this encoding can be redundant: information about the bulk need not correspond to a single, unique boundary piece.

Together, these tools reveal a rich relationship between quantum information and geometry. They do not justify reducing the claim to “everything is made of information,” or treating entanglement alone as a complete explanation of reality.

Does this mean gravity emerges from information or thermodynamics?

There are theoretical results connecting gravitational equations with thermodynamic and entanglement relations, but they are not direct experimental demonstrations that gravity is an emergent force. In a 2019 Physical Review D paper, Andrew Svesko describes how a Clausius relation for causal diamonds can yield gravitational equations of motion in a broad class of diffeomorphism-invariant theories, and relates that result to entanglement equilibrium.

That work is a specific theoretical framework. “Emergent gravity” covers distinct proposals, and this connection does not show that every approach to gravity has been reduced to entanglement or that the framework has been confirmed by observation.

Is the universe a hologram?

Not in the ordinary sense of being a projected image, and the evidence described here does not establish that our observed universe is holographic in the technical AdS/CFT sense. What it does change is how physicists can think about a gravitational description: in some well-defined settings, a theory with gravity in a bulk can be equivalent to a lower-dimensional quantum description. Whether a comparable account applies to our universe, and what that would mean for the nature of reality, remain open questions.
