The Study Table is one way to earn technology points in Graveyard Keeper 2, but it cannot unlock the whole tech tree on its own. Each eligible item can be studied only once, and the table consumes Science—and sometimes Faith—to award a one-time burst of colored points. You will also need points from gathering, crafting, autopsy, and other activities to buy technologies.
What the Study Table does
The Graveyard Keeper 2 Wiki’s Study Table reference places the table in the tower laboratory; it says the table is already there, so you do not need to build one. Studying an eligible item can award 10–150 technology points and reveal that item’s alchemy runes. The item stays in your inventory, but the Science and any required Faith are consumed.

Each item type can be studied once. The wiki says organs of the same kind and crops at different quality levels count as one item type, so collecting duplicates does not create additional study opportunities.

Science is a table input, separate from the red, green, and blue technology points you spend in the tree. The wiki lists decomposing paper or Science Kits at the Study Table as ways to obtain it:

Because each item is a one-time study and Science is consumed, be deliberate about what you study. The reference notes Water and Blood as one-Science studies and flags a quest connection involving Dream Dust. It does not establish a universally optimal order; prioritize new eligible items and the colored technology points you currently need.
Why studying alone cannot unlock the whole tree
The technology reference lists several other point sources: gathering, mining, clearing junk, harvesting, completing workbench construction, crafting, autopsy, and technology books. Points left on the ground are collected when you sleep, according to the wiki.
The same unofficial reference counts 236 technologies: 226 purchasable technologies and 10 free reputation nodes. It estimates that buying all 226 costs 11,157 red, 5,129 green, and 4,132 blue points; 124 technologies require blue points. The wiki also lists a maximum held balance of 999 for each color. These are reference figures, not a developer-published guarantee, so use the current in-game tree as the authority if a patch changes values.

Getting blue points for the tree
Studying is one documented source of technology points, but it is not the only one. If a technology requires blue points, use the available activities that award points and technology books as well as any eligible studies. The wiki lists study, crafting, autopsy, gathering, mining, clearing junk, harvesting, and workbench construction among the sources; it does not provide a version-specific route guaranteeing a particular blue-point total.

Study Table lockup: the fixed bug
The developer’s Steam announcements confirm that Graveyard Keeper 2 launched on September 22, 2026. Update 1.005, dated September 24, fixed a bug in which inserting an item for Science could lock the Study Table and prevent research from starting. That was a reported bug, not a normal study requirement. The announcements page also contains later October updates; consult the latest notes if the table behaves unexpectedly.

A practical study routine
- Check what you need. Look at the tech tree and identify which color of points is needed for your next unlock.
- Use new eligible items. The table offers only one study per item type, and duplicate organs or crop quality variants do not count as new types according to the wiki.
- Budget the inputs. Decompose paper or a Science Kit to make Science available, and account for any Faith requirement before starting a study.
- Keep earning points elsewhere. Gather, mine, clear junk, harvest, complete workbench construction, craft, perform autopsies, and use technology books as available.
- Collect ground points. The wiki says uncollected points are gathered upon sleeping; check your balance afterward, keeping the 999-per-color cap in mind.
