Graveyard Keeper 2 Energy Guide: How to Restore Energy and Manage Insanity

Energy powers manual work in Graveyard Keeper 2. Eat or drink for an immediate recovery, sleep to refill over time, and lower insanity to raise your energy cap.

In Graveyard Keeper 2, energy is a work budget: eat or drink to restore it immediately, or sleep to recover it over game time. Insanity is different—it lowers the maximum energy you can hold, and reducing insanity raises that ceiling without refilling the bar. Because sleeping advances the world, check for time-sensitive events before resting. The figures below come from community references and may change with patches.

What uses energy in Graveyard Keeper 2?

Energy is spent on manual work, including chopping, digging, crafting and autopsies. The mechanics reference says the crafting window shows the cost for each swing. If you cannot afford a swing, it is skipped and your character pauses; the reference does not describe the Keeper passing out from an empty bar. Zombies do not use the Keeper’s energy. GK2DB’s energy reference describes these mechanics but does not identify a specific game build, so check the current game when exact values matter.

That makes energy a practical limit on how much manual work you can do before recovering—not a general health bar. When a task stalls, check the displayed cost and your available energy before assuming the action is broken.

How do I get energy back?

Option What it does Trade-off
Eat or drink Applies energy immediately. The community reference does not give verified recovery values by food or drink, so compare item descriptions in your current build rather than relying on a ranked meal list.
Sleep Restores energy over time. The reference estimates roughly six in-game hours to fill an empty bar. World time advances during sleep, so scheduled events can pass before you wake.
Lower insanity Raises the maximum energy capacity. Does not refill the energy you are missing; use food, drink or sleep to restore the bar itself.

The same reference lists Energy Potions with values of 20, 50 and 100 energy, but says it could not find a version where they can actually be crafted, unlocked or purchased from a trader. Do not plan a work session around those potions unless you confirm they are obtainable in your current game.

Why is my energy bar so short?

Insanity reduces your energy ceiling. GK2DB gives the formula as a maximum capacity of 100 minus insanity. For example, at 10 insanity the formula implies a 90-point cap; if insanity rises, any current energy above the new cap is discarded immediately. Lowering insanity raises the cap again, but the newly available capacity remains empty until you recover energy.

The reference says a new game starts with 4 energy and 10 insanity, and gives an insanity limit of 80—or 70 with the Iron Will talent—producing minimum capacities of 20 and 30 respectively. These are community-reference figures, not confirmed values for every build. It describes drinking as the main way to lower insanity, but does not establish a verified item-by-item recovery table. Check current in-game descriptions before choosing a drink for a specific amount.

Does sleeping restore energy, and when is it a poor choice?

Yes. The reference says sleep restores energy over time and the Keeper wakes once the bar is full, rather than at a fixed morning hour. It reports that the world runs 50 times faster while you sleep. A bed reportedly will not let you sleep when energy is full unless the Lack of sleep effect is active.

Sleep is less useful when an appointment, weekly activity or deadline is near. The calendar reference says the world continues simulating during sleep, so time-sensitive events still happen. It describes a day as 7.5 real-time minutes and a six-day week as 45 minutes; those community-reported timings are patch-sensitive. Check the calendar and your upcoming commitments before choosing a long rest. GK2DB also says getting up saves the game, but because save behavior can vary by version, confirm it in the current build rather than treating sleep as a dependable save method.

How should I plan a work session?

  1. Check the action cost. For crafting, look at the energy cost shown in the crafting window; for other manual tasks, watch whether an action is being skipped because you cannot afford the next swing.
  2. Use an available food or drink when you need energy now. Read its current in-game description; the references do not establish reliable recovery amounts by item.
  3. Consider insanity if your maximum capacity has fallen. Lowering it can restore headroom, but it cannot replace the energy already spent.
  4. Check the calendar before sleeping. Rest can refill the bar, but it also advances the simulated world and may carry you past an event.
  5. Verify patch-sensitive figures in your build. The community references do not identify a build, and exact mechanics may change.

Are the energy figures current?

Graveyard Keeper 2 launched on September 22, 2026, according to the Steam game listing, which identifies Lazy Bear Games as developer and tinyBuild as publisher. In an October 2, 2026 update, the developers said they were continuing to rebalance and improve fundamental features. The official Steam announcements reviewed for this guide mention planned work on zombie helpers, sermon Faith, Panic Reduction and trader upgrades, but do not say whether energy, insanity, food recovery or sleep timing changed. That silence does not confirm the energy system was unchanged.

For that reason, treat the precise values here—including sleep speed, refill time, starting stats and insanity limits—as reported community-reference figures, not guaranteed specifications for every patch. The calendar reference describes day and week timing, but check those timings in-game if a deadline depends on them.
