A graphics card can fit the motherboard’s PCIe slot and still fail as an upgrade: it may be too large for the case, or the power supply may lack the capacity or connectors it needs. Check the exact card, case and PSU together before ordering.
What went wrong with this graphics card upgrade?
In a SitePoint community post dated August 28, 2026, forum user Brevis_Alt described choosing a faster graphics card, then discovering after opening the PC that it was larger than the old card and needed power connections the existing PSU did not have. The author later selected a different model after checking dimensions, slot thickness, PSU requirements, connectors and case space. This is one user’s account, not independently verified testing, and the post does not identify either card or report benchmark results. Read the forum discussion.

The practical question is not just whether a card uses PCIe, but whether the specific card fits and can be powered in the specific computer. NVIDIA’s compatibility guidance treats physical clearance and power as separate checks; both matter alongside the motherboard slot. NVIDIA’s RTX 4090 Founders Edition guidance.

- Find the exact card’s specifications. Use the add-in-card maker’s product page, not only the GPU-chip family name. Models based on the same chip can have different coolers, dimensions and power requirements.
- Measure the case and the available space. Compare the card’s length, width and slot thickness with the case’s published limits and the actual interior. Account for drive cages, radiators, fans and other nearby components.
- Allow room for the power cable. A card may fit when installed but leave too little space to route or connect its power cable safely. Check the connector’s required clearance and the cable’s path against the case panel and nearby components.
- Confirm the motherboard slot and neighboring space. Verify that the card can use the available PCIe slot and that its cooler will not be blocked by adjacent cards or components.
- Check the PSU’s capacity and connectors. Compare the exact card’s stated system-power guidance and required power connectors with the PSU label and its available cables. Do not assume that a card’s slot alone supplies all the power it needs.
- Compare candidates for your workload. Once fit and power are established, compare performance for the games or applications you use, as well as price. The forum account names no cards and supplies no performance measurements, so it cannot establish how much faster one option was than another.
Why dimensions and power figures are model-specific
As examples of how requirements differ, NVIDIA lists the RTX 4090 Founders Edition at 304 mm × 137 mm and three slots, with an additional 36 mm for power cables, and specifies an 850 W minimum system power. Those figures apply to that Founders Edition; partner-card dimensions and specifications vary. NVIDIA RTX 4090 Founders Edition specifications.

AMD’s Radeon RX 7600 Quick Setup Guide specifies a 550 W minimum system power for that model. That is not a general recommendation for every graphics card. Check the documentation for the exact board you plan to buy and follow its requirements. AMD Radeon RX 7600 Quick Setup Guide.
These examples are not a direct performance comparison, nor do they determine what a particular PC needs. PSU suitability depends on the chosen card and the rest of the system; connector type and count must also match the card’s requirements.

When should you choose a different card or replace the PSU?
If the card exceeds the case’s clearance, a smaller model may be the simpler alternative. If the current PSU does not meet the exact card’s power or connector requirements, compare the cost and practicality of a suitable replacement PSU with choosing a less demanding card. Do not buy a PSU based on a wattage number alone: verify the required connectors and the manufacturer’s guidance for the exact GPU.

What to check after installation
Brevis_Alt reports monitoring utilization, temperatures, VRAM use and frame times after the upgrade. These are useful areas to observe in the games or applications you actually use, but the post does not provide readings or establish a universal pass/fail threshold. If the system behaves unexpectedly, verify that the card is seated, its required power connectors are attached and the display is connected to the intended output; then consult the card maker’s troubleshooting guidance.
