Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDon’t assume the graphics card has failed. A black screen, flicker, scrambled image or crash can come from the monitor or cable, Windows display settings, a driver, an app, power or cooling problems, or another component. Start with checks that help isolate the cause, and avoid opening the computer until you have checked the exact system or card manual and warranty guidance.
First, identify what the problem looks like
The next useful step depends on the symptom. Note whether you see a black screen, flickering or scrambled graphics, a crash or hang under load, unusual heat, or fan noise. Also note the graphics card and computer models, Windows version, any recent driver, software, firmware or hardware changes, and whether the issue happens during startup, at idle or only under load. Those details help distinguish a display-path problem from a graphics-driver or broader system-stability issue.

If the screen is blank or there is no display
A blank screen can have several causes; Microsoft notes that it can occur in Windows “for several reasons.” Check the simpler parts of the display path before concluding the GPU is faulty.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the monitor is powered on and the display cable is firmly connected at both ends.
- If possible, try another compatible cable or monitor. Check that the replacement matches the ports and display requirements of your equipment; it is a way to isolate the connection, not a fix for a failed graphics card.
- On Windows, press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. You may hear a beep or see a brief flicker if Windows responds.
- Press Windows+P to cycle through display modes in case Windows is sending the picture to another display.
If the screen stays blank, Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guidance covers starting Windows in Safe Mode and updating, rolling back or uninstalling a display driver. A check that does not change the symptom does not, by itself, establish that the GPU is defective.

If the display flickers or looks scrambled
Microsoft says flickering in Windows 11 is usually caused by a display driver issue or an incompatible app. One useful distinction is whether Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the screen:
- If Task Manager flickers too, a display-driver problem is more likely.
- If Task Manager stays stable while other content flickers, an incompatible app is more likely.
Use the timing of the problem to choose a driver action. If it began after a driver update, rolling back may be more appropriate than installing another update; otherwise, updating or uninstalling the driver may be worth trying. Microsoft explains these options in its screen-flickering troubleshooting guidance. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it helped.

If games or other graphics-heavy work crash or hang
A display-driver timeout means the GPU took longer than Windows allows to produce output. It points to instability somewhere in the graphics path, but it is not proof that the graphics card itself has failed. Microsoft lists possible contributors including driver support, overclocked components, incompatible settings, insufficient cooling or power, defective hardware and background load. Its timeout detection and recovery documentation describes what the timeout means.
Other components can create similar symptoms during intensive applications. NVIDIA notes that problems involving the CPU, memory, motherboard, storage or system memory may look like graphics-card trouble. Consider what changed recently, and whether the crash occurs with one application or across several, before treating the card as the cause.

Choose driver and hardware checks carefully
There is no single driver action that fits every case. Microsoft’s guidance is to update, roll back or uninstall depending on the symptom and whether it followed a recent update. AMD also describes a clean driver installation as one stability step. Its Radeon stability guidance recommends reviewing recent software, driver or firmware changes and consulting the product manual before hardware changes.
If you are comfortable checking hardware, AMD’s guidance includes verifying that the card is seated and its power-supply connections are secure where appropriate. Follow the exact manual for your model, and check support and warranty terms before removing parts or attempting an invasive repair. For persistent problems, contact the graphics-card or system manufacturer.

What to share when asking for tailored advice
To narrow down the next checks, provide:
- The graphics-card model and the computer or motherboard model.
- Your operating system and version.
- The exact symptom: black screen, artifacts, flicker, crash, overheating or fan noise.
- When it happens: at startup, at idle, or under load, and whether one app or several trigger it.
- Any recent driver, software, firmware or hardware change, and what troubleshooting you have already tried.
