GrantQuest: How One Developer Turned Scholarship Hunting Into an RPG

GrantQuest is a scholarship-tracking web app concept that uses RPG mechanics to organize eligibility, documents, deadlines, and application progress.

GrantQuest reframes scholarship searching as a role-playing-game quest log: scholarships become quests, eligibility requirements become gates, application documents become inventory, and deadlines become countdowns. Its creator, Hashir, says the app also tracks applications and marks scholarship records according to how recently they were verified. The idea is to make both a student’s next steps and the trustworthiness of the underlying information easier to see.

How GrantQuest maps scholarships to an RPG

In a project post published on DEV Community on October 1, 2026, creator Hashir describes GrantQuest as a web app built around a game-like metaphor for scholarship applications. The mapping is functional rather than just visual: each scholarship is a quest, its requirements act as gates, documents are inventory, and clearing requirements earns XP. A deadline appears as a countdown, while application tracking gives students a way to follow progress.

That framing targets a familiar organizational challenge. Hashir uses “40 open tabs” to describe the problem he wants to address; it is an illustration from his post, not a measured statistic about students. GrantQuest’s proposed alternative is to put scholarship details and application tasks into a single quest-oriented workflow. Read Hashir’s project post.

Eligibility gates make requirements actionable

A scholarship listing that only presents eligibility in prose can leave a student to manually compare each condition with their own circumstances. Hashir says GrantQuest represents eligibility requirements as structured gates, allowing the app to calculate eligibility rather than merely display a paragraph of criteria. In practical terms, that design is meant to help answer, “Am I eligible for this scholarship?”

The distinction matters: structuring requirements can make a matching workflow possible, but it does not by itself guarantee that criteria are complete, interpreted correctly, or current. Students should still confirm important requirements against the scholarship provider’s official materials before applying.

Freshness and deadline urgency are different signals

GrantQuest’s reported freshness rule combines verification recency with whether the deadline has passed. A record is labeled FRESH when it was verified within the previous 30 days and its deadline has not passed. Otherwise, Hashir says it is marked NEEDS RE-VERIFICATION.

This status is not the same as a deadline warning. A recently verified scholarship can still have a deadline approaching, so the countdown communicates urgency while the freshness label communicates how recently the record was checked. Separating those signals is a useful design choice for information that can change: students need to know both how soon to act and whether the details deserve another check.

Why scholarship records need ongoing checks

Hashir’s examples show the risk of treating scholarship data as permanent. He says an ERSU Messina test record included guessed details; after checking an official Italian notice, he corrected the amounts, ISEE thresholds, and dates. He reports an award amount of €7,171.11 for fuori sede students, and says the application period had closed, so the record was marked for re-verification. The notice and amount have not been independently checked here, so applicants should consult the relevant official notice rather than rely on this example as current guidance.

He also says he found that the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship was no longer accepting applications and replaced its GrantQuest entry with the Canada Graduate Research Scholarship–Doctoral. That status and the relationship between the programs are the creator’s account, not independently verified facts. The broader lesson is that a scholarship database needs a process for surfacing records that may have changed, not just a way to add listings.

Hashir summarized the principle this way: “The data’s trustworthiness is modeled as data, not vibes.” He also wrote, “An honest red badge beats a lying green one.” Both lines describe the value of making uncertainty visible instead of presenting a stale listing as confidently current.

What the creator reports about the build

Hashir says GrantQuest uses Sanity for its structured scholarship records and describes a workflow that moves records from unverified to under review to verified. He also reports that a scheduled Function flags scholarships when a deadline has passed or verification is more than 30 days old. These are details from his project post; the implementation and live service have not been independently inspected.

He recounts a deployment problem after importing shared logic from above the Next.js web/ directory. According to Hashir, the deployment returned 404s until he copied the file into web/lib/. This is his account of a project-specific fix, not a general rule about Vercel deployments.

He further reports discovering a committed Sanity write token in .env.example, replacing it with a placeholder, revoking the exposed token, and rotating a token. That incident is a useful reminder to avoid putting live credentials in example configuration files, but it does not establish the security status of the current repository or deployment.

What is known about access and coverage

Hashir’s October 1, 2026 project submission reports 25 scholarships and says the app can be used without a login or signup. Those are author-reported figures and access details; the live scholarship count and current operation have not been verified. The post does not establish comprehensive country or education-level coverage, nor does it support a performance comparison with other scholarship tools.

If you use GrantQuest, treat it as an organizer and discovery aid rather than the final authority on a scholarship. Check the official program page or notice for eligibility, award amounts, required documents, and deadlines before investing time in an application.
