Gran Turismo 7 Physics: What Real Drivers Take Seriously

GT7’s aerodynamic modeling, expert input, and update-specific driver feedback support a serious simulation—but not a claim of perfect real-world accuracy.

Real drivers have reasons to take Gran Turismo 7’s physics seriously: Polyphony Digital describes specific aerodynamic modeling and expert input, while a competitive GT World Series driver has discussed how an update changed tire strategy. That evidence supports a technically ambitious simulation—not a claim that every car, tire, or condition matches real life perfectly.

What makes GT7’s physics more than a marketing claim?

Polyphony Digital says Gran Turismo 7 uses computational fluid dynamics to model aerodynamic effects, including downforce changes as ride height varies and handling effects from wind direction and air turbulence. The official product description also says changing weather and track saturation affect tires. These are concrete descriptions of the intended model, but they are developer claims, not independent proof of universal accuracy. Polyphony Digital’s GT7 feature description

Sony’s launch-era preview says the simulation drew feedback from Lewis Hamilton, Michelin, and FIA GT Championship drivers. The official product page names Dunlop as a global tire partner. Sony described the work as building on more than 25 years of Gran Turismo physics development; that is a franchise-history claim, not a score for real-world accuracy. Sony’s GT7 preview

On PS5, DualSense haptics can communicate cues such as tire lock and front-tire understeer. That matters because a driver needs to sense what the car is doing, not merely see a lap time. Haptics help convey vehicle state; they do not validate the underlying physics on their own. Sony’s GT7 preview

What a real competitive driver noticed in update 1.49

In a July 2024 interview with GTPlanet, GT World Series racer Guy Barbara discussed a preview of the 1.49 physics update after drivers had limited practice with it in Montreal. He said, “everything’s faster!” In context, that was his shorthand for a changed driving experience—not a measured finding that lap speeds universally increased.

GTPlanet reported that drivers had to rethink tire strategy. Barbara described a warning in feel at around 90% tire wear, followed by a sharp drop in grip near the end of tire life. That percentage refers to the in-game wear gauge and his impression of this update preview; it is not a universal measure of real tire lifespan or a controlled real-car comparison. Why update numbers matter

GT7’s physics have changed over time, so a statement about how the game handles should identify the build when possible. Official notices describe changes in updates 1.31 and 1.71, and Barbara’s comments concerned 1.49.

1.71 (2026) Polyphony Digital’s notice describes revised suspension and steering physics, plus grip loss off track when the relevant setting is at Real. Official GT7 update notice

For detailed descriptions of 1.71’s tire behavior, GTPlanet reported that slip behavior, rolling resistance, tire heating, wear, and grip loss changed. Treat that list as contemporary reporting rather than a substitute for the official notes. GTPlanet’s report on update 1.71

Where the realism claim has a limit: tires

In an August 2026 report of an interview with evo, GTPlanet said Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi identified tire behavior as a particularly difficult modeling problem. According to the report, suspension and drivetrains are comparatively tractable, while tire contact-patch behavior shifts with heat, wear, and surface conditions—even with tire-maker input.

Yamauchi told evo, as quoted by GTPlanet: “The level of grain that happens when you have certain conditions on the track, it’s something that we just don’t have yet.” The comment acknowledges a specific limit; it does not negate the other technical features or establish that the whole model is inaccurate. What the FIA collaboration does—and does not—show

In a 2014 FIA interview, Yamauchi described information exchange and data comparison between the FIA and Polyphony, including detailed circuit surveying and understanding why track features are designed as they are. He said, “We want each and every circuit exactly as it is in real life and the collaborating with the FIA is a big part of it.” This is historical context for circuit work, not an assessment of GT7’s current tires or vehicle physics. Street Fighter 6 - PS5
  • Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
  • Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
  • Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  • In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
  • Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.
  • Use the same car class and, where possible, the same model.
  • Match the game update, tire compound, tire wear, track, and weather.
  • Keep driving assists and control hardware consistent.
  • Separate questions about aerodynamics, tire breakaway, suspension response, controller feedback, and collisions; evidence about one does not prove the others.

That approach keeps the conclusion proportional: GT7 has detailed, evolving physics shaped by expert feedback and discussed seriously by competitive drivers, while claims of exact equivalence to real driving go beyond what the available evidence establishes.
