Check the response body, content type, and request path first; the status code alone does not identify the cause. Then troubleshoot the access-control layer that actually returned the error.
First identify who returned the 403
Record the exact URL called, HTTP method, status, response headers, content type, and response body. GrabzIt’s REST API documentation says request errors can be returned as JSON and advises checking the response content type. If the API endpoint returned the 403, investigate API credentials and request access. If the capture request succeeded but the destination page shows a denial, investigate that site’s authentication and access rules.

A numeric 403 alone does not establish a universal cause. The API response and the captured page are different evidence; do not change credentials, domains, or network settings until you know which one failed.
Fix a 403 from a REST API request
Verify the application key and authentication format
Confirm that the application key belongs to the intended account and is sent using a method documented by GrabzIt: the expected request parameter or a Bearer token in the Authorization header. Keep the key in server-side code. GrabzIt warns: “Do not use this API on the client side, it will expose your Application Key!” See the REST reference for the supported request formats.

Check encoding and request method
URL-encode parameter values, especially a destination URL that contains its own query string, ampersands, spaces, or other special characters. If you are submitting HTML for conversion, use POST with the documented form-encoded body; do not send it as an incorrectly constructed GET request. These request-format requirements are documented in GrabzIt’s REST API reference.
Check source-IP access restrictions
GrabzIt documents authorizing the IP addresses permitted to call its API. Compare the configured allowlist with the actual outbound (egress) IP of the server making the request, including any change caused by a deployment, hosting move, NAT gateway, or proxy. A mismatch is a sensible configuration check, but the documentation does not say that every mismatch necessarily returns HTTP 403. See GrabzIt’s account security settings.

Fix a 403 from a browser JavaScript call
The JavaScript API requires authorized domains. In the GrabzIt account, check the authorized-domain setting and add the exact origin serving the integration. Check production, staging, and local development separately; a deployed hostname may differ from the one already authorized. GrabzIt’s JavaScript API documentation says the API will not work when no authorized domains are configured. The exact-hostname checks are practical implications of that domain requirement.
Fix a 403 on the captured website
Determine whether the destination requires sign-in
Open the destination independently and establish whether it requires authentication. GrabzIt documents HTTP Basic Authentication through credentials included in the URL, with both the username and password URL-encoded. It also describes support for capturing pages behind session-based login walls. Follow the instructions in its website authentication guide.

Use a dedicated credential where feasible. Credentials embedded in URLs can leak through logs or other handling, so do not place sensitive account passwords in public code or shareable links. Basic or session authentication does not guarantee access to pages protected by other identity checks, anti-bot systems, or authorization controls.
Use a proxy only for a relevant network path
A customer-provided HTTP proxy may be appropriate when the capture needs to traverse a particular customer-controlled network path. GrabzIt documents proxy configuration in its proxy guide; it is not presented as a universal cure for a destination’s access-denied response.

Escalate with a reproducible, sanitized report
If the checks do not identify the cause, provide GrabzIt support with enough information to distinguish an API rejection from a destination-site denial:

- Timestamp and timezone, request method, and API endpoint.
- Sanitized parameters and the destination URL, with sensitive query values removed.
- HTTP status, response content type, and response body.
- Whether the destination is accessible outside the capture workflow and whether the failure is consistent.
Remove the application key, passwords, session cookies, authorization headers, and other secrets before sharing logs. The available public documentation does not provide one diagnostic that explains every possible 403.

What a historical GrabzIt 403 report does—and does not—show
In a community thread, a GrabzIt support response dated 19 April 2024 said of a particular capture failure: “The 403 error is fixed, we recently locked down our recourse on our CDN.” That is an incident-specific explanation, not evidence that a current 403 in another account or against another target has the same cause. Frequently Asked Questions
Does every 403 from GrabzIt mean the API key is wrong?
No. The 403 may be from GrabzIt’s API or from the destination website. Check the response body and content type to establish which system returned it.
Can a proxy fix a 403?
Only when the relevant issue is the network route and the proxy is an appropriate customer-controlled path. GrabzIt does not describe proxy configuration as a general fix for access-denied responses.
