You can build a GPT-6 Astra coding workflow that carries useful project knowledge between tasks by combining repository instructions, current task context, curated notes, and searchable history. That gives an agent access to remembered information; it does not, by itself, retrain Astra or make the model autonomously improve. Treat memory as evidence to retrieve and verify, not as unquestionable truth.
What “self-improving” should mean
For a coding agent, “self-improving” is best used to describe a workflow that gets more effective because it captures useful findings, retrieves them when relevant, and evaluates changes to its instructions or memory policy. It should not imply that a custom agent has changed GPT-6 Astra’s underlying weights or learned durably from every patch.

OpenAI describes GPT-6 Astra as suited to coding and complex reasoning, and documents API tools that can support agent workflows. Those capabilities are building blocks, not a complete memory architecture. OpenAI has also described Codex retaining notes across context windows and searching earlier windows for information such as requirements and test results. That is stored and retrievable context—not evidence of autonomous model training. In OpenAI’s announcement, the notes feature was experimental and configurable; check current Codex documentation before assuming its availability, defaults, or configuration have stayed the same.
Separate the four kinds of context
A practical design keeps different kinds of information in different places. This is an implementation framework, not an architecture prescribed by OpenAI.

| Layer | What belongs there | How the agent should use it |
|---|---|---|
| Repository instructions | Current conventions, project boundaries, build and test guidance, and links to relevant documentation. | Read the general guidance, then follow references that apply to the task. |
| Task and session context | The requested change, constraints, files inspected, decisions made, and current test results. | Use it to guide the work in progress; do not assume it will persist into a later task. |
| Curated project memory | Concise, reusable decisions and findings with their source and status. | Retrieve only when relevant, then check time-sensitive or consequential claims against the repository. |
| Tools and verification | Repository access, search, editing, shell or other enabled tools, and test or review procedures. | Use tools to inspect current reality and verify changes rather than relying on recalled context. |
Make repository instructions selective
Put stable, broadly applicable conventions in the repository’s instruction file, commonly AGENTS.md. Keep task-specific details in the relevant documentation and point to them from the instructions. For example, tell the agent to consult the database guide when a task touches persistence, rather than requiring it to read every architecture, database, and deployment document before every edit.
OpenAI’s September 11, 2026 guidance, “Rethinking skills and prompts for GPT-6 Astra,” warns that accumulated instructions can overconstrain the model and recommends reviewing skills, AGENTS.md files, and task prompts. Its advice favors making repository material conditionally relevant. OpenAI’s “Using GPT-6” guidance likewise emphasizes calibrating prompts and workflow choices to the task. In practice:

- Keep the top-level instructions short enough to act as an index, not a duplicate of every project document.
- State high-impact constraints directly, such as required tests or generated files that must not be edited by hand.
- Link to the owning documentation for subsystem conventions, and specify when the agent should read it.
- Review instructions when they conflict, are stale, or routinely cause unrelated files to be read or changed.
Design memory as a reviewable record
Durable notes should help the next task make a decision, not become a second, unmaintained copy of the codebase. Save information that is likely to matter again: a confirmed architectural constraint, a decision and its rationale, a non-obvious test command, or a verified failure mode. Avoid storing a full conversation, speculative diagnosis as fact, or details that can be cheaply rediscovered from current code.
A useful note format is a design recommendation rather than an OpenAI-defined schema. Include:

- Claim: one concise fact or decision.
- Status: confirmed, provisional, or superseded.
- Provenance: repository path and, when useful, commit or test-run reference; for a decision, note where it was made.
- Scope: the component or task types where it applies.
- Time context: when it was checked, if it may change.
For example, a note might say that a particular package’s integration tests require a local service, identify the relevant test documentation, and mark the detail as confirmed after a specific run. The agent should still inspect the current instructions and environment before acting on it. A source path is a lead to verify, not proof that the code has not changed.
Choose persistence and retrieval deliberately
There are two distinct paths in the documented material: a custom agent can implement its own storage and retrieval, while Codex has described cross-context notes and searchable prior context. Do not assume the Codex feature is the implementation or availability model for a separately built API agent.

- Use repository files for knowledge that should be versioned, reviewed with code, and available to collaborators. Keep the content concise and assign ownership for updates.
- Use a searchable store when notes need to span repositories or sessions and the agent must retrieve relevant history. Preserve provenance, access boundaries, and update status along with the text.
- Use both only with clear precedence if the project needs versioned conventions plus broader history. Current code and repository instructions should take priority over an older remembered claim.
Evaluate any memory mechanism on persistence across sessions, retrieval relevance, source traceability, stale-note handling, access controls, and cost or latency. The available sources do not establish a winning memory product or architecture for this use case.

- Frame the task. Read the applicable repository instructions and identify the files, tests, and constraints that govern the requested change.
- Retrieve selectively. Search notes or prior context using the task’s subsystem and problem, not a broad request to load everything. Treat a match as a candidate clue.
- Validate before relying. Check remembered paths, APIs, decisions, and test commands against the current repository and environment. If they disagree, follow current evidence and mark the note for correction.
- Do the work with available tools. GPT-6 Astra’s documented API tool set includes options such as hosted shell, file search, code interpreter, apply patch, skills, MCP, and computer use. Which tools are available depends on the configured workflow; the model reference does not mean every agent has every tool enabled.
- Verify the change. Run the relevant checks and report what ran and what did not. Do not record a test as passing unless it was actually run and passed.
- Write back selectively. Save a note only if the finding is likely to help a later task. Include provenance and status, and update or supersede conflicting notes instead of accumulating contradictory instructions.
Measure improvement instead of assuming it
Memory can reduce repeated discovery, but it can also amplify stale assumptions or irrelevant instructions. To decide whether a change to prompts or memory policy helps, compare the old and new workflow on a stable set of representative tasks. Keep the model, tools, repository state, and evaluation conditions as consistent as practical, and inspect failures rather than relying on a single aggregate score.
Track outcomes that matter to the project, such as:
- Whether patches are accepted and meet the task’s requirements.
- Regression frequency and severity.
- Task completion and the amount of human correction required.
- Whether retrieved notes were relevant, accurate, and properly verified.
- Additional retrieval latency or operational cost, if those constrain the workflow.
Change one part of the system at a time where possible: for example, retrieval rules, note format, or repository instructions. The sources do not provide a validated benchmark or claimed performance gain for this exact custom architecture, so measure against your own task set rather than presenting memory as a guaranteed improvement.
Quick Recap
Common failure modes and how to handle them
- Old notes override current code: require the agent to check cited paths and current tests, then revise or retire the note.
- Instructions make every task heavyweight: move subsystem details into linked documentation and make consultation conditional on relevance.
- Memory fills with conversation residue: save only reusable outcomes, not every intermediate thought or failed guess.
- Hypotheses become project facts: label uncertain claims provisional and require confirmation before they guide edits.
- Success is inferred from one good patch: evaluate repeated representative tasks and track regressions and correction burden.
- Codex behavior is assumed to apply to an API agent: treat product-specific memory features and custom storage as separate implementation choices.
