Those are different behaviors—not a single standard feature. Compare the app’s location cadence, off-the-clock handling, geofence rules, record controls, device needs, and payroll exports before choosing one.
What does “GPS tracking” mean in an employee time clock app?
At minimum, an app may attach location evidence to a clock-in or clock-out. Other products update location while an employee is on the clock, or check whether a device is inside a defined job-site boundary. A geofence may trigger a reminder, record an exception, or prevent a punch. The label “GPS tracking” does not tell you which behavior a product uses.

For example, QuickBooks Time says its Workforce app logs location at clock-in and updates it during the day. Geo Time Tracker describes verification at clock-in and clock-out, without live tracking, movement history, or background location collection. These vendor descriptions are not independent performance tests, but they illustrate why buyers should verify the documented cadence and plan requirements.
How do employee GPS time clock apps compare?
| Product | Location and geofence behavior described by provider | Records, integrations, and access | Plan or price information in reviewed materials |
|---|---|---|---|
| QuickBooks Time (Intuit) | Workforce logs location at clock-in and updates during the day. Optional geofencing can remind employees when they enter or leave a job site; setup is required. | Lists QuickBooks Payroll, QuickBooks Online, Desktop, and third-party integrations; conditions or fees may apply. Intuit says admins cannot access off-clock location data. | Geofencing is identified as a QuickBooks Time Elite feature. See Intuit’s QuickBooks Time page for current terms and plan details. |
| Chronotek Pro | Provider says each clock-in and clock-out receives a GPS Smart Track. Geofences can flag off-site punches; it also describes blocking clock-in until GPS is active and confirmed. | Describes location-mismatch alerts, live dashboards, time-card history, and payroll-ready exports. Telephone or landline clock-ins are offered for sites without smartphones. | Pricing was not stated on the reviewed feature page. See Chronotek Pro’s feature page. |
| Workforce.com | Provider says it captures GPS data at clock-in and clock-out and supports site perimeters through geofencing. | Describes timesheets, scheduling, payroll connections, and time-record workflows. | Quote-based on the reviewed page. See Workforce.com for current details. |
| Geo Time Tracker | UK-focused provider says location is verified at clock-in and clock-out, without live tracking, movement history, or background location collection. GPS geofencing is available. | Android app and mobile web access; CSV exports, with higher-plan formats for Sage, BrightPay, and QuickBooks. | Its page listed Starter at £29 monthly when billed annually, with one work location and unlimited users, at the time reviewed. Pricing and geographic availability can change. See Geo Time Tracker. |
| allGeo via ADP Marketplace | Marketplace listing describes GPS attendance records included with pay-period logs, geofenced job sites, mobile location tracking, alerts, and a visualization dashboard. | Attendance records are sent with pay-period logs, according to the listing. | The listing accessed 2026-10-07 showed a geofencing tier at $15 per mobile user/month or $120 per mobile user/year, plus a $10 setup fee; a manual time-clock tier was $7.50 per mobile user/month. These listing prices can change. See ADP Marketplace. |
What should you check before choosing an app?
Location cadence and off-the-clock handling
Ask when the app requests or stores a location: only at punches, periodically during a shift, or when a geofence condition is checked. Also ask who can view each type of record, how long it is retained, and whether checks occur when workers are off the clock.

QuickBooks’ page makes a distinction worth examining closely: it says the app shares location while on the clock and does not save off-clock GPS points to its servers. It also says the app may request off-clock GPS points to determine whether a worker entered a geofence; those points remain on the device, and administrators cannot access off-clock location data. An off-clock check therefore may occur even though the provider says the point is not saved on its servers or available to admins.
What a geofence actually does
Do not treat a geofence reminder as proof that a punch is restricted. QuickBooks describes entry and exit reminders; Chronotek describes flagging off-site punches and a separate option to block clock-in until GPS is active and confirmed. Confirm whether the chosen plan merely alerts someone, marks a record for review, or prevents the punch—and what happens when GPS is unavailable.
Corrections, approvals, and audit history
GPS is only one part of a reliable time record. Check how staff can report a missed or incorrect punch, who approves edits, whether the original entry and correction remain visible, and how supervisors receive exceptions. Chronotek describes dashboards, alerts, and time-card history; other providers’ materials should be checked for the specific correction and approval workflow you need.

Payroll connections and exports
Confirm that the service exports records in a format your payroll process can use, and whether the integration requires a particular plan or additional fee. The cited providers describe QuickBooks connections, ADP Marketplace attendance logs, and Geo Time Tracker CSV and higher-plan accounting formats. Verify the exact export fields and reconciliation workflow before rollout; “integrates with payroll” does not by itself establish that the output matches your setup.
Devices, GPS settings, and connectivity
Check supported operating systems, location permissions, and whether a mobile connection is needed at the worksite. Intuit says mobile GPS accuracy requires cell service and location settings. QuickBooks documents Android and iOS support; Geo Time Tracker describes an Android app and mobile-browser access. Employees may already have compatible phones, so a separate purchase is not automatically required. Chronotek’s telephone or landline option may suit sites where workers do not use smartphones.
Plan limits and total cost
Compare the full price basis: per user or per location, monthly versus annual billing, setup charges, user limits, and which functions require a higher tier. QuickBooks lists geofencing under Elite, while ADP Marketplace lists a separate allGeo geofencing tier. Geo Time Tracker’s displayed Starter price and allGeo’s listed rates are time-sensitive figures, not guaranteed current offers.

How should you handle employee privacy and legal requirements?
Product descriptions explain vendor-stated behavior; they do not establish that an employer is legally compliant. Requirements for employee notice, consent where applicable, retention, purpose limitation, and off-duty monitoring depend on jurisdiction and circumstances. Before enabling location features, determine which rules apply where your employees work using jurisdiction-specific primary guidance, and set a clear policy describing when location is collected, who can access it, and how records are used.
