Play Gothic 1 first, then Gothic II if you want the story in sequence. The second game is an explicit sequel: it follows the Nameless Hero after the magical barrier from the first game has been broken, and its unsettled world makes more sense when you have seen how that story began.
Why Gothic 1 comes first
Gothic 1 introduces the Nameless Hero as a prisoner sent into the Valley of Mines, a colony enclosed by a magical barrier. Its prisoners form competing factions inside that setting. The game’s original release date is listed as March 15, 2001 on Steam’s Gothic 1 Classic listing.

Gothic II picks up after the barrier is broken. THQ Nordic describes the release of the prisoners as throwing the surrounding region into disorder, and calls the game the sequel to the original. Playing the first game gives context to that change and to the returning central character. The publisher’s Gothic II announcements outline that premise.
