If GoProxy returns “This is a proxy server. Does not respond to non-proxy requests,” it has received a request it does not recognize as a proxy request. A common thing to check is whether the client is using the GoProxy address as a proxy and sending an absolute target URL, rather than requesting a relative path such as /ping.
What the message means
GoProxy’s default NonproxyHandler handles requests that are not in proxy form. Its source describes the distinction as a relative path—for example, GET /ping—instead of an absolute URL. The default handler responds with the message “This is a proxy server. Does not respond to non-proxy requests.” and an HTTP 500 status. GoProxy source and project
So the message indicates that a request reached GoProxy but was classified as a non-proxy request. On its own, it does not show that the container failed to start.
What to check
- Use the GoProxy endpoint as a proxy. Check the client’s proxy settings or command so that the GoProxy address and port are configured as the proxy, rather than treating that address as the website you want to visit.
- Check the request target. GoProxy’s source contrasts an absolute URL with a relative path such as
/ping. Make sure the client is making a proxy request to a destination URL, not sending only a path to GoProxy. - Inspect any intermediate proxy. If traffic passes through Nginx or another reverse proxy, check how that layer constructs the request sent upstream. A 2017 GoProxy issue reports the same message in an Nginx
proxy_passsetup, but does not establish a universal fix for such configurations. Historical GoProxy issue #209 - Consult the project documentation. The GoProxy repository and homepage are the project resources identified in the forum discussion; the discussion does not specify a particular configuration change or documentation page. What the LFS258 forum post establishes
In a March 2022 LFS258 Class Forum thread titled “A.3 review2,” a learner said the containers were running and ports had been assigned, then reported this message while cURLing the GoProxy container. The post does not include the cURL command, image or version, request headers, or lab instructions, so it is not possible to identify the exact cause from the thread alone. LFS258 forum thread

A respondent said accessing the GoProxy container did not seem to be required for the exercise and pointed to the GoProxy project. That is the respondent’s guidance in the discussion, not independently verified course documentation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need extra GoProxy configuration?
The reported message alone does not establish that an additional GoProxy setting is needed. First check the request form and whether the client is actually using the endpoint as a proxy. If an intermediate layer is involved, inspect the request it forwards. The forum post does not provide enough detail to recommend a specific flag, container setting, or port change.
