To update GoPro firmware from your phone, connect the camera to the GoPro Quik app and follow its update prompt. Your phone needs internet access, and the camera connects to Quik over Wi-Fi. The exact update and menu instructions depend on the camera model, so check that model’s support page if the app does not offer an update.
Update GoPro firmware with Quik

Install or open GoPro Quik on your smartphone or tablet. GoPro describes Quik as an app-based update method that requires a mobile device and Wi-Fi. Your phone or tablet also needs internet access.

Turn on the camera and connect it to Quik by following the app’s on-screen instructions. GoPro’s owner manuals say the app checks the camera software when it connects and notifies you if an update is available.

If Quik offers an update, follow the prompts until the process is complete. Screen labels and prompts can differ by app version and camera model; use the instructions shown for your camera rather than expecting one universal button sequence.

Keep the camera powered and do not remove its battery or SD card while the update is running. GoPro’s MAX2 owner’s manual warns that removing either during an update may permanently damage the camera.
Check the installed firmware version
Use the camera’s About or Camera Info menu and follow the path for your model. For example, the HERO10 Black manual gives Dashboard > Preferences > About > Camera Info; the HERO6 manual gives Preferences > About This GoPro. These are model-specific examples, not a universal path. Go to GoPro’s Product Updates directory to find the relevant model page and instructions.

If Quik does not offer or complete the update
GoPro documents a manual microSD-card update as an alternative for supported models. It requires a computer and access to the camera’s card; it is not a step required for an app update. Follow the exact-model instructions in GoPro’s Product Updates directory, since update files and procedures vary by camera.

Download the update for the exact camera model and extract the download. GoPro’s documented manual procedure uses the extracted UPDATE folder, not the ZIP file.

Transfer the UPDATE folder to the microSD card using a computer and card reader or adapter, then safely eject the card.

With the camera powered off, insert the card and turn the camera on. GoPro’s manual-update instructions specify at least 20% battery for this procedure and say the camera starts the update automatically.

If the documented manual updater displays “CAMERA UPDATE FAILED,” GoPro’s support instructions say to remove and reinsert the battery, then restart the procedure from the beginning. Consult the support page for your exact model because camera designs and recovery steps can differ.

Why the camera model matters
Firmware availability, release notes, and update instructions are model-specific. For example, GoPro lists HERO11 Black firmware v2.32, dated January 13, 2025, as a general bug-fix update, while its LIT HERO page lists v2.10.00, dated April 14, 2026, with feature additions and bug fixes. Those releases apply to those named models; they do not indicate what another GoPro should install. Check the exact model page before updating.
