Google does not have one hidden data switch. Different controls can save different kinds of activity: Web & App Activity, Search services history, Maps Timeline, browser history, and ad settings are separate. Review each control that matters to you, then choose whether to pause future saving, delete existing records, or both.
What “Google’s hidden data layer” means
It is a useful shorthand for the activity and related information that may be saved through multiple Google Account and product controls—not a single secret database or a setting that is identical for every account. Google’s Web & App Activity help page says saved activity may include Search and Maps activity, language, referrer, browser or app and device type, ad clicks, some purchases, and Assistant interactions. It also says: “Activity may also include info about your location from your device’s general area and IP address.”

Additional activity from sites, apps, Chrome, and Android may be included when the relevant option is enabled. What is saved depends on which controls are on, which options are selected, the products used, and—in some cases—account type or administrator settings.

Which Google controls should you check?
| Control | What it covers | What to do there |
|---|---|---|
| Web & App Activity | Activity across Google services, with optional inclusion of activity from certain sites, apps, Chrome, and Android. It may include general location information. | Review included activity, pause future saving, or choose to turn it off and delete saved activity. |
| Search services history | Where available, activity across services such as Search, Maps, Shopping, Flights, Hotels, Translate, and News. It may include general location based on device or IP information. | Review and manage it separately if the control appears in your account. |
| Timeline | Location-related records managed through Google Account or Maps Timeline controls. | Review Timeline and its deletion or auto-delete options. Pausing it is not the same as deleting stored data. |
| Browser history and cookies | Browsing data stored by Chrome or another browser on a device. | Use that browser’s own controls; Google Account activity settings do not clear it. |
| Ad settings | Information Google uses to personalize ads. | Review ad personalization separately in Google’s ad settings. |
Google is gradually rolling out Search services history settings, so the label and availability can vary. Some accounts may still see Web & App Activity as the control governing Search history. Work or school administrators may also manage or restrict some settings. Google’s Account Help overview describes these separate controls and notes that account menus may differ.

How to review, pause, and delete saved activity
- Open your Google Account data controls. Go to the account privacy and data controls and review the current activity settings. Check Web & App Activity and whether options for Chrome, partner sites or apps, or voice and audio activity are included.
- Inspect My Activity. Open My Activity to review saved activity and use its deletion controls. Available filters and categories depend on your account and activity.
- Choose pause versus delete deliberately. In Web & App Activity, Google distinguishes “Turn off” from “Turn off and delete activity.” Turning a setting off limits future saving under that control; it does not by itself erase records already saved. If you want past activity removed, choose the deletion option or delete it in My Activity.
- Review Timeline separately. Open Google Account or Maps Timeline controls and inspect the records and deletion or auto-delete settings. Pausing Timeline alone does not remove existing Timeline records.
- Check Search services history if available. If the control is present, review its history and deletion options independently. If it is not present, the account may still use the older Web & App Activity arrangement.
- Clear browser data on each relevant device. Use the history and cookie controls in Chrome or the other browser you use. Account-level activity controls do not clear browser-local history or cookies.
- Review ad settings and export only if needed. Visit Google’s ad settings to adjust personalization. To keep a copy of supported Google content, use Download Your Data; exporting is not a deletion action.
Why turning off Location History may not remove every location-related record
Timeline is not the only control that can involve location information. Google’s location policy says Web & App Activity and Search services history may include a general area inferred from a device or IP address. It distinguishes those histories from Timeline: turning off Timeline does not affect location handling through the other controls, and turning off those other histories does not turn off Timeline.
Google says location metadata associated with Search services history and Web & App Activity is automatically deleted after 30 days. That statement applies to the specified metadata in those histories; it is not a promise that every location record in every Google product or account is erased after 30 days.

What deletion can—and cannot—promise
Use the control that matches the data you want to manage: My Activity for account activity, Timeline for Timeline records, browser settings for local browsing data, and ad settings for ad personalization. Google’s documentation describes these as distinct records and controls, so deleting data in one place should not be treated as proof that all related information has been removed everywhere.

Google describes these uses in its activity and account help pages. The exact effects depend on the product and setting, so read the confirmation screen before deleting or switching a control off.

Defaults are not a substitute for checking your account
Google Safety Center says Location History is off by default and Web & App Activity auto-delete defaults to 18 months for new accounts. Those are stated defaults for new accounts, not evidence of the current setting on any particular account. Existing accounts, choices made during setup, and administrator-managed accounts may differ; verify the settings you see.

A 2022 multistate settlement document from Kentucky described historical allegations that Google’s interfaces and disclosures did not make clear enough that Web & App Activity could save location information. That document is historical context about the period and allegations it addresses, not a description of every account’s present interface. For current choices, rely on the controls and explanations shown in your account and Google’s current help pages.
