It is a visual identity update, not a change to Search, accounts, or other product features; Google said the rollout would continue across products, platforms, and services.
What changed in Google’s “G”?
The older compact G used four mostly distinct color sections. The newer mark blends red into yellow, yellow into green, and green into blue, keeping Google’s familiar four-color sequence while giving it a continuous gradient appearance. It updates the compact G, sometimes called the “Super G”; it does not by itself mean that Google has redesigned its wordmark or replaced every product logo.

Google’s design team describes the G as part of a larger identity system that also includes the Google wordmark and four animated dots for interactive or transitional moments. The compact mark is intended to work in small spaces. Google Design says the team adjusted the vibrancy of some colors because adjacent colors can optically blend and darken. (Google Design)

Google gradient G rollout timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| September 1, 2015 | Google introduced the previous four-color G as part of a broader identity redesign. |
| May 2025 | The gradient G began appearing on Search surfaces and in the Google app on Android and iOS. The Google.com favicon also adopted it that month. |
| June 2025 | Google said the visual treatment had been brought to the Gemini spark. |
| September 29, 2025 | Google announced the gradient G as its company-wide mark, with further rollout across products, platforms, and services. |
| May 19, 2026 | A separate refresh of Google Workspace app icons began rolling out. |
Google’s 2025 announcement did not give a product-by-product completion date. As of the research desk’s August 18, 2026 check, the company-wide rollout should be described as ongoing or substantially expanded, not as a confirmed simultaneous change everywhere.

Where will users see the gradient G?
Documented appearances include Google Search, the Google app, the Google.com favicon, Search widgets and AI Mode surfaces, and Gemini’s visual identity. Google says the mark will roll out across additional products, platforms, and services, but has not published a complete inventory of every surface using it.
That means users may still encounter the previous icon. App updates, cached launcher icons and favicons, legacy surfaces, or a product’s separate identity can all contribute to an uneven transition. The current Google branding guide identifies the blended-gradient version as the newest G and instructs users to use it instead of older versions. (Google brand guidance)

Why did Google change the mark?
Google says the G is meant to represent the company as a whole, rather than only a particular product or service. The company also connects the brighter colors and gradients to its AI era and to creative and technological activity across its products. That is Google’s stated rationale, not evidence that Gemini alone caused the redesign. (Google’s announcement)

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs the Workspace icon refresh the same change?
No. Google’s corporate gradient G is a compact company mark. The Workspace refresh is a separate redesign of individual app icons, including Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Meet, Chat, Keep, Forms, Sites, and Tasks. Those apps retain distinct identities; Google did not say they would all be replaced by the standalone G.

What does the change mean for users and publishers?
For ordinary users, the G redesign is cosmetic: it adds no feature or setting and requires no account change. The practical difference is that the Google mark may look brighter and more blended in app icons, browser tabs, Search interfaces, and other Google-branded materials.

Publishers and businesses should follow Google’s current brand guidance rather than modifying the mark or using it in a way that implies endorsement or partnership. The existence of official brand assets does not mean the G can be used as a business’s own branding. (Google brand guidance)

Bottom line
Google has designated the blended-gradient G as its current company-wide compact mark, evolving the four-color icon rather than replacing every product logo with one generic G. The rollout across Google surfaces is phased, while Workspace’s separate app-icon refresh changes the look of individual apps without changing how they work.

FAQ
Is Google’s gradient G a new logo?
It is an updated compact Google mark. The change does not necessarily redesign the Google wordmark or individual product logos.
Has the new G replaced the old icon everywhere?
Google announced a continuing rollout, not a single global change date or a complete list of every updated surface. Older icons may remain visible during the transition or on products with separate branding.
Does the gradient G change Google app features?
No. The G update is visual. Google Workspace separately says its app-icon refresh does not change product functionality or administrative controls.
Can a business use Google’s new G?
Use Google’s official brand guidance. It says to use the newest mark and restricts modifications and uses that imply endorsement or partnership.
