Google first described a mobile shortcut that put “Help me write” directly in the body of an empty Gmail draft. The newer workflow goes further: start with a prompt, then use a prompt bar to request specific revisions to the draft. The feature remains part of Gmail, not a separate writing app.
What the original mobile shortcut did
In an August 2024 Workspace update, Google said that when a mobile email draft was empty, a “Help me write” shortcut would appear in the message body. Tapping it opened the full Help me write experience. The shortcut was an easier entry point into the existing feature—not a separate email composer or writing product. That announcement concerned getting into the tool from an empty mobile draft. It should not be confused with the newer editing flow, which lets users revise a draft through follow-up instructions.

How to draft and revise an email now
Start a draft from a prompt
Google’s current Gmail Help instructions say to compose a new message or reply, enter a request in the prompt bar, then select Create. Google recommends making the prompt specific: identify the recipient, subject or action, and intended tone. For example, ask for a concise, friendly reply to a named recipient confirming a meeting time, rather than simply asking Gmail to “write an email.” Google Gmail Help: Draft emails with Gemini in Gmail

Ask for targeted changes
After a first draft, add an instruction in the prompt bar to request a particular change—such as including a missing detail or deadline. Google’s June 26, 2026 Workspace announcement describes this as a way to refine a first draft without starting over. What personalization can add
Google announced in May 2026 that Help me write could use relevant Gmail and Drive context based on a prompt, and could adapt to a user’s writing style from previously written emails. The rollout notice said extended rollout for Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains began May 5 and could take longer than 15 days. Because the announcement page was not available for direct review, treat these as details reported in Google’s announcement excerpt, not a guarantee that every account has the capability. In February 2026, Google VP of Product for Gmail Blake Barnes said Help me write could use past emails, chats, and Drive files to include relevant details while reflecting personal writing style. That post described availability as beginning with Gemini Alpha customers, with broader access expected in the coming months. Where personalization is available, Google says users can select Sources to see which emails or documents Gemini used. If a draft depends on a particular message or file, point Gmail to that specific source in the prompt and inspect the sources shown before relying on the generated details. Google Gmail Help

Availability depends on the feature and account
Google’s help page says eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plans support Help me write in multiple supported languages globally. For personal Google Accounts, it lists availability in the U.S. and supported languages. Separately, Google announced on January 8, 2026 that drafting or polishing with Help me write was rolling out to everyone at no cost. These statements describe different dates and potentially different feature sets: basic drafting is not necessarily the same as newer personalization or connected-context features.
