For developers, that means fewer hacks around HDR tone mapping and a clearer path to producing images that take advantage of supported displays.
There’s still nuance—Ultra HDR is device- and workflow-dependent. This guide focuses on what the update changes conceptually, how to wire it up in a modern CameraX app, and how to validate that you’re truly producing Ultra HDR output (not just a regular high-dynamic-range look).

What’s changing with CameraX and Ultra HDR
CameraX acts as an abstraction layer over the Android camera stack. When Google updates CameraX to better support Ultra HDR, the practical outcome is: your app’s camera capture pipeline is more likely to request and preserve the HDR encoding that Ultra HDR-capable devices can generate.

Even though the details of the rollout vary by Android version and hardware, the direction is consistent: CameraX becomes the “standard” place where third-party apps can participate in the Ultra HDR ecosystem without each app reinventing compatibility logic.

Why this matters for third-party camera apps
Ultra HDR images are designed to render with richer highlights and smoother gradients on supported screens. If your app captures stills via a pipeline that doesn’t preserve HDR encoding or metadata, your images can end up looking flat—or worse, look like they were tone-mapped for SDR only.
By aligning CameraX with Ultra HDR expectations, you get:
- More consistent HDR behavior across devices where Ultra HDR is supported.
- Less custom compatibility work (fewer per-device branches).
- Better odds that downstream viewers (gallery, sharing targets, compatible viewers) receive HDR-friendly output.
Prerequisites and device requirements
You can’t treat Ultra HDR as a universal feature flag. It’s constrained by OS build, device camera capabilities, and display/decoder support. Before you change code, set expectations with a real device matrix.
What you need on the developer side
- Android Studio with a modern Gradle plugin (the exact version depends on your project).
- CameraX dependencies updated to the versions that include the Ultra HDR-related improvements.
- Testing devices with known Ultra HDR support and verified behavior.
What you need on the user/device side
- A device model and OS combination that actually supports Ultra HDR capture.
- A viewing path that respects HDR encoding (your app’s preview isn’t the only validator—file viewers matter).
How Ultra HDR works (developer view)
At a high level, Ultra HDR is about encoding a photo so that HDR-capable displays can render it with enhanced highlight detail while SDR devices still get a sensible tone-mapped version. From a developer standpoint, the key is whether your capture path preserves the HDR-appropriate encoded output.
That preservation can fail if you:
- Use a capture path that outputs a format or buffer that can’t carry Ultra HDR metadata/encoding.
- Convert the image in a way that strips HDR signals.
- Preview using a pipeline that tone-maps for display before you ever write the final file.
Implement Ultra HDR with CameraX: practical paths
There isn’t one single “Ultra HDR checkbox” UI setting you can flip. In CameraX apps, you typically get the best results by combining updated CameraX artifacts with the capture API that aligns with still image output, and then validating the resulting file.
Path 1: Use the latest CameraX artifacts
First, update your CameraX dependencies to the release(s) that include the Ultra HDR rollout prep. Use a BOM or consistent artifact versions to avoid accidental mismatches across modules.
Path 2: Verify build + minSdk and device behavior
Ultra HDR support is conditional. If your minSdk/build setup or device capabilities don’t match, your capture will fall back to standard HDR/SDR behavior.

Path 3: Capture pipeline considerations (ImageCapture vs alternatives)
For stills, CameraX’s ImageCapture is usually the core path. If you’re doing custom processing with analysis outputs or converting buffers, double-check that your final saved image keeps HDR-friendly encoding.
Step-by-step: enable, capture, and validate HDR output
These steps are written to be actionable even if you’re still figuring out the exact Ultra HDR behavior on your target devices.
1) Upgrade CameraX dependencies
Update your CameraX versions in build.gradle (Module). If you use CameraX BOM, update the BOM version once and let artifacts align.
Example structure (adjust versions for your project):
// module build.gradle (Groovy) or build.gradle.kts (Kotlin DSL)
dependencies { def camerax_version =
def camerax_version = "REPLACE_WITH_LATEST_CAMERA_X_WITH_ULTRA_HDR_ROLLOUT" implementation platform("androidx.camera:camera-bom:$camerax_version") implementation "androidx.camera:camera-camera2" implementation "androidx.camera:camera-lifecycle" implementation "androidx.camera:camera-view" // Keep modules aligned with the BOM to reduce accidental behavior differences
}
2) Configure ImageCapture and output targets
Next, wire up ImageCapture as your still capture path and make sure your output target is appropriate for HDR-capable output.
In practice, that means:
- Use ImageCapture output that writes the final stills file (rather than reading pixels and re-encoding immediately).
- Prefer a flow where CameraX produces the file output (or a format the platform can preserve for Ultra HDR), instead of you doing format conversions in the middle.
- Keep your preview pipeline separate from your saved-file pipeline—preview behavior can look “HDR-like” even when the saved file isn’t.
If you’re using takePicture with an ImageCapture.OutputFileOptions, ensure you’re writing to a destination that matches the expected file type and doesn’t trigger unnecessary transformations.

3) Add device capability checks
Before you assume Ultra HDR is active, gate your behavior on device support. That includes both:
- Whether Ultra HDR capture is supported on the device/OS combination.
- Whether the specific camera sensor and capture settings on that device can actually generate Ultra HDR output.
The simplest approach is to:
- Attempt capture using the updated CameraX flow.
- Validate the output file characteristics (metadata/encoding signals) after capture.
- Maintain a fallback experience that still produces a good standard HDR/SDR photo if Ultra HDR isn’t available.
4) Validate results on supported displays
Validation isn’t just “does the preview look nice?”—Ultra HDR needs to be verified in the saved output and viewed through a path that honors HDR decoding.
Your validation checklist should include:
- Inspecting the written file (metadata and encoding signals, where possible).
- Checking behavior on multiple viewers (system gallery vs your in-app preview vs sharing targets).
- Verifying on the device’s HDR-capable display (or an HDR-aware playback path), because some screens can only show SDR tone-mapped results.
Testing strategy that actually catches regressions
If you only test “it compiles” and “the image looks okay,” you’ll miss the exact failure modes that break Ultra HDR—usually at save/encode/share boundaries. Use a test strategy that confirms the output remains HDR-capable end-to-end.
Test matrix
- Devices: include at least one Ultra HDR-supported device and one non-supported device.
- OS/build variants: test the OS versions that map to the rollout behavior you care about.
- Cameras: if your app switches lenses (wide/ultra-wide/tele), test each lens you support—camera pipeline differences can matter.
- Capture settings: test your common use cases (flash on/off if supported, different zoom levels, any stabilization modes).
File inspection and preview sanity checks
For each test capture:
- Confirm the saved image file is written using the intended path (no accidental re-encoding step).
- Do a quick metadata/encoding check using tools or libraries that can identify HDR-related signals.
- Compare preview vs saved output to ensure the preview isn’t misleading you.
That “preview vs file” comparison is where many teams get fooled—your UI can show a tone-mapped preview that looks good, while the saved file silently falls back.
Round-trip tests (share, upload, re-render)
Ultra HDR can be lost when the image passes through other apps or services. Add round-trip tests to catch that:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Share locally to another app on the same device and re-open it.
- Upload and re-download through any service you care about (especially if you operate or integrate with a backend pipeline).
- Re-render in your own app (if you display the captured file) and verify you aren’t forcing an SDR conversion during decode.
Round-trip tests are the fastest way to catch “it works on capture” problems that only show up when images leave your app.
Common mistakes and gotchas
Expecting HDR on every phone
Ultra HDR isn’t a universal capability. Even if you update CameraX correctly, you still need to expect standard HDR/SDR output on devices that can’t generate or render Ultra HDR.

Forcing a pipeline that discards HDR metadata
If you do any format conversion, pixel processing, or custom re-encoding before the final save, you can strip the very signals Ultra HDR relies on. Keep the capture-to-save path as direct as possible.
Sharing to apps that down-convert
Even when you capture Ultra HDR correctly, downstream apps (and some upload pipelines) may down-convert to SDR. That can make it look like CameraX “didn’t work,” when the change actually happened after your app.
Overlooking storage and performance constraints
Some Ultra HDR-capable outputs can be larger or may involve additional processing overhead. Test performance and storage behavior—especially if you capture frequently or support burst modes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting when Ultra HDR doesn’t show up
Step 1: Confirm you’re on a supported OS/device combination
Start by validating the device model and OS version you’re testing on. Ultra HDR behavior is gated by platform and hardware support, so “it should be on” assumptions will waste hours.
Step 2: Check capture path and output format
Make sure your implementation truly uses the still capture path that preserves HDR-friendly output. Verify that you’re not unintentionally converting the image to a different format when saving.
Step 3: Rebuild with clean Gradle caches
Dependency mismatches can create subtle behavior changes. Clean and rebuild (and confirm CameraX modules remain aligned via the BOM) if you’ve updated dependencies recently.

Step 4: Inspect logs and image metadata
Look for warnings related to capture settings, output configuration, and any image processing steps you perform. Then inspect the saved file for HDR-related signals—don’t rely solely on human perception.

Alternatives and trade-offs
Rely on the system camera vs rolling your own pipeline
If your priority is compatibility over experimentation, delegating to system capture can reduce the risk of HDR preservation issues. The trade-off is less control over UX and customization.
Use your own HDR post-processing (when Ultra HDR isn’t available)
For devices without Ultra HDR support, you can still improve image contrast and highlight roll-off via HDR-inspired processing. Just treat it as a separate pathway from Ultra HDR—visually similar doesn’t always mean encoding-compatible.
