Google’s AMIE conversational AI has been evaluated prospectively in a real primary-care clinic, where it took patients’ histories by text before their appointments and suggested possible diagnoses for discussion with a clinician. The single-center feasibility study, conducted with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), reports promising workflow and diagnostic findings—but it does not show that AMIE is ready for unsupervised use or improves patient outcomes.
What the Lancet study evaluated
AMIE, short for Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer, is Google’s research system for clinical reasoning and conversation. Earlier work examined it in simulated encounters; this prospective study tested a defined pre-visit workflow in an academic ambulatory primary-care clinic at BIDMC. Google describes the publication as an early move into assessment in a real clinical environment.

Patients used text chat to describe their health concerns before seeing a provider. AMIE gathered information and presented potential diagnoses for the patient to discuss with the clinician. Researchers examined conversational safety and quality, patient and clinician experience, and clinical reasoning in comparison with primary-care providers. The study was preregistered and IRB-approved, and used a single-center, single-arm feasibility design.

The official sources give different counts. Google’s October 8, 2026 announcement says 98 patients consulted AMIE ahead of urgent-care visits, while the Google Research abstract says 100 adult patients completed a text-chat interaction up to five days before an appointment. The available summaries do not explain the discrepancy, so these should be treated as source-specific figures rather than interchangeable counts.

What did Google report?
Safety monitoring
Google says human safety supervisors monitored every patient-AMIE interaction in real time. Under the study’s predefined criteria, supervisors did not need to intervene to stop a consultation. This is a finding about observed interventions within this protocol, not proof that the system is safe in every setting or without supervision.
Clinicians’ use of the summaries
In Google’s publication announcement, clinicians said the summaries helped them prepare for visits in 75% of cases and influenced their approach to care in more than half of cases. These are reported clinician assessments of this workflow; they do not establish that care quality or patient outcomes improved.

Diagnostic measures
Google reports that the final diagnosis was included somewhere in AMIE’s differential diagnosis in 90% of cases. The Google Research abstract separately reports 75% top-three accuracy. These metrics answer different questions: inclusion anywhere means the final diagnosis appeared among the possibilities, while top-three accuracy means it ranked among the three leading possibilities. Neither means AMIE independently made a definitive diagnosis.

What the findings do—and do not—show
The study provides evidence that a conversational AI can be evaluated in a real pre-visit workflow, with human oversight and clinicians reviewing the resulting information. It offers early evidence about feasibility, user experience, and diagnostic reasoning in that particular setting.

It was not a broad effectiveness trial. A single academic center and a single workflow cannot establish that the findings generalize to other hospitals, patient groups, conditions, or ways of delivering care. The reported diagnostic agreement is not evidence of better health outcomes, nor does the absence of a stop-intervention establish safety without supervision. Google says larger clinical trials are needed.

Google’s AMIE project overview also describes a separate nationwide randomized study with Included Health as ongoing research. That is distinct from the BIDMC feasibility study published in The Lancet; the ongoing study’s results should not be inferred from the BIDMC findings.
