Google documents a Debian command-line environment in Terminal, where command-line apps run and graphical apps open in a separate graphics screen. Direct access to Linux GUI apps from the app launcher remains future work, with no delivery date announced. Meanwhile, Google’s launch messaging gives prominent attention to AI features alongside Android apps, desktop Chrome, and developer tools.
What Linux apps can Googlebook run today?
Google documents a Debian Linux environment accessed through the Terminal app. On first use, you install a virtual-machine image. Command-line applications run in Terminal; graphical applications open in an alternative graphics screen reached from Terminal. This is more than a command-line-only setup, but it is not yet the integrated desktop experience some users may expect.

Google’s current Terminal help instructions explain the documented workflow. They do not establish that every Linux package works, or guarantee performance and reliability for a particular application, Googlebook model, or software version.

How to install Linux apps
- Open Terminal and set up Linux. On first use, follow the prompt to install the VM image.
- Update package lists and installed packages. In Terminal, run
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y. - Install the packages you need. Use
sudo apt install -yfollowed by the package names. Google’s examples include Git, Python, pip, and Node.js. For example, to install Git, usesudo apt install -y git. - Open the app from its Linux environment. Use Terminal for command-line applications. Graphical applications open in the alternative graphics screen described in Google’s instructions.
Package names, dependencies, and compatibility can vary. If an app fails to install or launch, check its own Linux installation guidance and confirm that the package supports the Debian environment and your device’s architecture; the available Google documentation does not promise universal compatibility.

Files, settings, and VM management
The Linux VM is separate enough that access to files and resources needs attention. Google documents shared-folder settings for granting the VM access to local folders, and says VM files can be browsed from the Files app. Its advanced settings include display resolution, memory size, keep-awake behavior, and console type.
The Terminal help page also documents backing up data and uninstalling the VM image. Before removing the environment, use the documented backup option if you need to preserve its data. Google’s instructions are available in the Googlebook Terminal Help Center.

What Linux improvements are planned?
In an October 13 roadmap post, Cyrus Stoller, Google’s Group Product Manager for Laptops & Tablets, said the team is working on Linux GUI app support integrated directly into the app launcher. That would make graphical Linux apps easier to find and open than the current Terminal-centered flow. The post describes planned work, not a feature that has already shipped.

The October 13 roadmap post gives no delivery dates for these items. Treat them as plans rather than capabilities to rely on when buying or setting up a device.
Why earlier coverage described Linux apps as less integrated
An October 6 report from 9to5Google described Linux apps as less integrated than on Chromebook and said GUI apps were not the initial focus. That report reflects the early release state. Google’s newer Help Center documentation now describes both command-line and graphical app access, while its October 13 roadmap still identifies launcher integration as future work. These points are compatible: GUI apps can be used now, but the more seamless launcher experience is not yet documented as available.

Is Googlebook “all about AI”?
“All about AI” is a characterization of Google’s product emphasis, not a description of a laptop that lacks other computing features. Google’s launch announcement prominently presents Gemini and other AI features, including Rambler and Create My Widget, while also discussing Android apps, desktop Chrome, Antigravity, and Linux developer tools. AI is a major part of the positioning, but it is not the only use Google describes.

Google says Googlebook devices start at $899 and highlights hardware and service figures including displays up to 2.8K OLED, dedicated NPUs rated at over 45 TOPS, and battery life of up to 14 hours. It also advertises up to 10 years of Googlebook OS updates and 12 months of Google AI Pro. These are company-published figures, not independent test results; exact specifications, availability, and offer terms depend on the model and may change. Check the listing for the particular device and region before relying on them. Google’s launch announcement also lists initial devices from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.
What prospective Linux users should check
If Linux is central to your workflow, evaluate the current VM rather than buying on the assumption that roadmap features will arrive by a particular date. Compare the actual model’s configuration and regional availability, then consider whether its present app access and resource controls meet your needs.
