Google Workspace MCP with Claude Code: Set Up OAuth and Connect the Right Services

Set up Claude Code for Google Workspace remote MCP with the right endpoint, OAuth scopes, and a clear understanding of preview access and client-flow limitations.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Workspace’s remote MCP servers are part of its Workspace Developer Preview Program. You can configure Claude Code to connect to a selected service over HTTP and authenticate interactively, but Google’s published Claude-specific steps cover Claude.ai and Claude Desktop—not Claude Code as a tested client. Treat the CLI setup below as a practical integration path, and confirm that OAuth completes for your account and endpoint.

What you need before configuring the connection

  • Access to the Google Workspace Developer Preview Program.
  • A Google Cloud project where you can enable APIs and MCP services.
  • Claude Code installed and available in an interactive terminal.
  • The Google Cloud CLI (gcloud) if you are following Google’s command-line setup steps.

Google documents its Workspace MCP servers for general MCP clients using OAuth 2.0 and Streamable HTTP. Claude Code supports remote HTTP MCP servers and interactive OAuth, but Google’s page does not explicitly list Claude Code as a tested client. Google’s instructions for Claude.ai and Claude Desktop include a Claude callback URI; do not copy that URI into Claude Code’s CLI configuration unless the applicable client flow specifically calls for it. See Google’s Workspace MCP setup guide and Claude Code’s MCP documentation.

Choose the Workspace services you actually need

Google provides a separate remote endpoint for each Workspace product. Add only the services required for your workflow, and enable the matching APIs and MCP services in the Google Cloud project.

Workspace service Remote MCP endpoint
Gmail https://gmailmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1
Google Drive https://drivemcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1
Google Docs https://docsmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1
Google Sheets https://sheetsmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1
Google Slides https://slidesmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1
Google Calendar https://calendarmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1
Google Chat https://chatmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1
People API https://people.googleapis.com/mcp/v1

For the selected products, enable the corresponding standard API and MCP API in Google Cloud: Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, Chat, or People. Google also calls for a Chat app configuration when using the Chat MCP server.

Configure Google OAuth for the selected tasks

  1. In Google Cloud, open the project you will use for the integration and configure its consent screen in Google Auth Platform.
  2. Enable only the Workspace APIs and MCP services corresponding to the endpoints you selected.
  3. Choose the OAuth scopes needed for the operations you plan to perform. Examples in Google’s guide include Gmail read access (gmail.readonly) or draft creation (gmail.compose); Drive read access (drive.readonly) or file access (drive.file); Docs and Sheets read or edit scopes; Calendar list, free/busy, and event-read scopes; Chat read or message-creation scopes; and People directory, profile, or contacts read scopes.
  4. Create and configure the OAuth client as directed by Google’s setup instructions. The scopes you request define what the integration can access or do; avoid requesting broader access than the task requires.

Google’s exact scope choices are product- and task-specific. Use its official setup guide for the scope list and applicable client setup. Do not assume a callback URI documented for Claude.ai or Claude Desktop is correct for Claude Code.

Add an endpoint in Claude Code

Claude Code recommends HTTP transport for remote MCP servers. To add Gmail for the current user, run:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user gmail https://gmailmcp.googleapis.com/mcp/v1

For another product, replace gmail with a server name of your choice and substitute that product’s endpoint from the table. The user scope makes the server available across projects for that user.

If the configuration should be shared with a project, use Claude Code’s project scope instead and follow its approval prompt in an interactive session. Project-scoped server configuration is stored in the project’s .mcp.json. Choose scope deliberately: user scope is personal and reusable across projects; project scope is appropriate when a team needs a shared configuration.

Authenticate and verify the server

  1. Start Claude Code in an interactive terminal and enter /mcp to view configured servers and start the OAuth flow, or run claude mcp login gmail from an interactive terminal.
  2. Complete the browser-based sign-in and consent flow if the endpoint supports the client’s OAuth flow. Claude Code documents secure credential storage and automatic token refresh.
  3. Check the connection with /mcp, claude mcp list, or claude mcp get gmail.
  4. Try a read-only operation first, such as searching Drive files, listing Calendar events, or reading a document.
  5. When testing a write capability, choose a reversible or reviewable action. For Gmail, creating a draft is safer than sending a message.

If authentication fails because the endpoint requires preconfigured OAuth client credentials or rejects dynamic client registration, use the endpoint’s applicable registration requirements. Do not substitute the callback URI for Claude.ai or Claude Desktop without confirmation. Google’s documentation describes OAuth 2.0 for its servers, while the exact completion of the Claude Code flow should be verified in the account and deployment being configured.

Match server access to the work you intend to do

The services expose different capabilities; access is not necessarily read-only. Google’s examples include:

Reduce risk when Claude Code can access Workspace data

Google warns that Workspace MCP clients can read, modify, and delete data. It also cautions that untrusted emails, documents, and other external content may contain hidden instructions intended to manipulate an AI session. Claude Code likewise advises users to trust the MCP servers they connect and notes prompt-injection risk from retrieved content.

  • Use only trusted MCP servers and enable only the Workspace products needed.
  • Request the narrowest scopes suitable for the task.
  • Review proposed actions before they change or send Workspace data, particularly deletion, updates, and messages.
  • Be cautious when asking Claude Code to act on content from unknown senders or documents.
  • For a project-scoped server, review the project’s .mcp.json and approve the server only if you trust its configuration.
