Choose based on where the task needs to happen—not simply because you open Google Workspace in Chrome. For Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Forms automation, also check whether Google’s separate category of Editor add-ons is the right fit.
How they differ
| Decision point | Google Workspace add-on | Chrome extension |
|---|---|---|
| Where it works | Inside supported Google Workspace hosts and contexts. Support depends on the host and the add-on’s capabilities. | In Chrome’s browser environment, where it may interact with web pages or browser features according to its design and permissions. |
| Typical purpose | Bring an action, information, or service into a Workspace workflow, such as a task associated with Gmail or a document. | Add behavior to Chrome or work with websites and browser functions. |
| Interface | Workspace add-ons use Google’s card-based interface model. The available interface and capabilities vary by host. | Uses Chrome extension mechanisms; the visible interface and behavior depend on the particular extension. |
| Installation and availability | Published add-ons are available through Google Workspace Marketplace; an administrator can also install add-ons for users. | Desktop Chrome extensions are commonly added through the Chrome Web Store. Publication can be public, unlisted, private, or limited to a group, and administrators can manage availability. |
| Permissions | Requires authorization for the access it needs. Connecting to a third-party service may require a separate authorization for that service. | Developers declare permissions for APIs and features in the extension manifest. Review the requested access before installing. |
| Mobile | Generally desktop-oriented, with some contextual Gmail mobile support; check the exact host and feature. | The cited Chrome Help guidance covers adding extensions to desktop Chrome. It does not establish that the same extension functionality runs in mobile Chrome. |
Google’s documentation lists common Workspace surfaces such as Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Meet, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and also describes Chat as a host for the add-on type. Not every capability is available in every host: support depends on the API and context. For example, the add-ons overview identifies limits involving Calendar conferencing dropdowns and iOS capabilities. See Google’s add-ons overview and add-on types.

What “Google add-on” can mean
Google distinguishes Workspace add-ons from Editor add-ons. An Editor add-on targets an individual editor, such as Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Forms, and can provide editor-specific menus, dialogs, and sidebars. Workspace add-ons use a different card-based model and can integrate with supported Workspace hosts. If you need an extension specifically for an editor, identify which category and host it supports rather than assuming every Google add-on is a Workspace add-on. Google explains the distinction in its add-on types documentation.

A Workspace add-on is not automatically available in every Google app or on every device. Google documents host-specific and interface constraints: Workspace add-ons use cards, cannot use Apps Script simple triggers, and generally cannot detect activity outside their own scope. The documentation also says they do not yet support document context in editors and are desktop-oriented, while noting contextual Gmail mobile support. These implementation details can change; consult Google’s current Workspace add-on restrictions and confirm the specific host and interaction you need.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Likewise, installing a Chrome extension does not make it a Workspace add-on. It may be useful while you use Gmail or Docs in Chrome, but its scope is Chrome and the browser context—not Google’s Workspace add-on interface. The exact behavior depends on the extension and the permissions it requests.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose a Workspace add-on to investigate when the task should appear inside a supported Workspace app or workflow. Verify support for the exact app and context.
- Choose a Chrome extension to investigate when you need a browser feature or behavior that applies to websites or Chrome itself.
- Check Editor add-ons for functionality aimed specifically at Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Forms.
- Check mobile requirements early. Confirm the particular add-on’s supported host and mobile interaction; do not assume desktop features carry over.
- For a work or school account, ask the administrator whether the add-on or extension is allowed or can be installed centrally.
Review permissions and organization controls
Both types can request access, so evaluate the specific tool rather than relying on its category. Google says an add-on’s authorization card explains the access it requests, and a connected third-party service may ask for its own authorization. For Chrome extensions, review the permission prompt and install only extensions you trust. Google’s installation and authorization guidance and Chrome’s extension installation help describe these steps.
