Google Wallet Payment Declined? How to Troubleshoot Contactless Payments

A Google Wallet decline may be a phone-to-reader problem or a card rejection. Use these checks to identify the cause and find the right next step.

If Google Wallet says a payment was declined, first check whether the terminal reacted to the tap. No response usually points to NFC, how the phone is positioned, or terminal support; a recognized tap followed by a decline calls for checking the selected card and contacting the card issuer. Google says a declined transaction is not charged.

First identify what happened at the terminal

“Declined” can describe two different problems. If the reader did not react, start with the phone-to-terminal connection. If it recognized the attempt and displayed a decline, check the card in Wallet and then ask the issuer about the transaction.

  • No response: Check that NFC is on, Google Wallet is the default contactless payment app, and you are tapping near the terminal’s reader. Confirm that the terminal accepts mobile contactless payments.
  • Tap recognized, payment declined: Check that the intended card is selected and ready in Wallet. If it is, contact the bank or card issuer.

Make sure the phone and Wallet are ready

Check NFC and the default payment app

  1. Open Android Settings and search for NFC. Turn it on if it is off.
  2. Open the NFC or contactless-payment settings and choose Google Wallet as the default payment app. Menu names and locations vary by phone.
  3. Unlock the phone before paying. A screen lock is required for phone setup for contactless payments.

If Wallet displays “Turn on NFC to pay with Wallet,” Google Wallet Help explains: “Your phone either doesn’t support NFC or has it turned off.”

Check the payment card’s status and selection

Open Google Wallet and inspect the card you intend to use. Resolve a “Card not set up” prompt or complete any requested verification. If you see “Card suspended,” contact the bank. A first card added to Wallet becomes the default contactless card, so check which card is selected before tapping.

To change the default card, open Wallet, select the card you want, and use the option to make it the default for contactless payments. You can also select a different card before a tap if you do not want to change the default.

Check device security and certification

Wallet contactless payments require a phone that meets Google’s security requirements. Check Play Protect certification in the Play Store under profile icon > Settings > About. Rooted devices do not work with Wallet contactless payments; custom ROMs, an unlocked bootloader, or uncertified software can also prevent setup. If you modified the system software, Google advises restoring the original operating system and consulting the device manufacturer.

If the terminal does not respond, retry the tap

  1. Look for a contactless symbol or Google Pay symbol on the terminal.
  2. Hold the phone closer to the reader for a few seconds. Try another position: the NFC antenna may be near the top or middle of the phone.
  3. If there is still no response, ask the cashier whether that terminal accepts mobile contactless payments.

A terminal’s support for a card network with chip or swipe does not guarantee that it supports that network for contactless. Google gives Visa and Mastercard versus a particular Amex or Discover card as an example of this kind of difference. Ask the retailer which networks its terminal accepts for mobile contactless.

If the terminal recognizes the tap but declines the card

  1. In Wallet, confirm the card is ready and is the one you meant to use. Complete any setup or verification request shown there.
  2. Check whether the exact issuing bank and card type are supported in the country where you are paying. Use Google’s supported payment methods page and select the relevant country.
  3. If the bank and card are supported but the payment still declines, contact the issuer and ask whether there is an account or transaction issue.
  4. If the issuer finds no issue, ask the retailer whether its terminal supports mobile contactless payments for your card network.

Card eligibility depends on the country, bank, and card. A physical card’s ability to make contactless payments does not by itself establish that it can be added to Google Wallet.
