Google Voice can automatically route calls from selected contacts or Google Contacts labels straight to Google Voice voicemail. Set the rule on a computer at voice.google.com → Settings → Calls → Custom call forwarding; the current Google documentation says phones can display rules, but creating, editing, and deleting them requires a computer. This is a current documented capability, not a verified 2026 launch.
Set up a caller-specific voicemail rule
- Open voice.google.com on a computer and sign in.
- Click Settings in the upper-right corner.
- Select Calls.
- Under Custom call forwarding, click Create a rule.
- Search for and select one or more contacts, or choose a Google Contacts label.
- In the action section, choose Send to voicemail.
- Click Save.
Google Voice synchronizes contacts from Google Contacts, and eligible work or school accounts can also use contacts from the organization directory. Saving the person in Google Contacts usually makes selection easier.

The caller is routed to Google Voice voicemail. Google does not document a special announcement telling callers that a rule sent them there, so do not assume they hear one. A voicemail can be up to three minutes long; the relevant Google documentation does not state a maximum number of stored messages. See Google’s voicemail instructions.

Send an entire category of callers to voicemail
When creating a rule, search for a contact label as well as individual contacts. Labels managed in Google Contacts can cover groups such as “Sales calls,” “Former clients,” “Family,” or “After-hours contacts.” Updating the label in Google Contacts is separate from editing the Voice rule.

Add a dedicated greeting
A custom forwarding rule can specify a voicemail greeting for the selected contacts or group. That is separate from recording the greeting itself. Google Voice lets you record and manage up to 10 voicemail greetings; create or change them using the instructions at Google Voice voicemail greetings, then select the appropriate greeting in the rule.
Edit, reorder, or remove a rule
Edit
- Open Google Voice and go to Settings → Calls.
- Under Custom call forwarding, click Manage rules.
- Click Edit rule beside the rule.
- Change the contacts, action, or greeting, then click Save.
Delete
- Open Settings → Calls → Custom call forwarding → Manage rules.
- Open the rule’s More actions menu.
- Choose Delete and confirm.
Priority matters
Rules run in the order shown on Manage rules. If a caller matches more than one rule, only the first applicable rule is used. Use Move up in the list or Move down in the list to change priority. For example, put a specific “send to voicemail” rule above a broader rule that forwards the same label to a linked phone.

What the rule does—and does not do
- It is not blocking: the caller can still leave a message. Use Google Voice blocking or spam controls when you want a stronger response.
- It applies to calls, not texts: Google’s global voicemail setting specifically says it does not forward texts, and custom-rule documentation describes call handling rather than text routing. Do not expect a voicemail rule to silence or redirect messages.
- It does not replace device settings: review My devices and linked numbers. Calls not captured by the rule may still ring enabled phones or linked numbers.
- It does not control carrier voicemail: routing calls made to a mobile number into Google Voice voicemail is a separate conditional-forwarding setup, described at Google’s carrier-forwarding help page. Carrier commands vary, and some resellers do not support the feature.
If a phone number changes in Google Contacts, update the corresponding Voice rule for the new number.

Custom rules versus Do Not Disturb
Use a custom rule when only certain people should bypass ringing. To send every incoming Voice call to voicemail, use Do Not Disturb: on desktop, open Settings, select Do not disturb, and turn on Send calls to voicemail. In the mobile app, open Menu → Settings and turn on Do Not Disturb. Google Workspace accounts may also be able to follow Google Calendar working hours or out-of-office status; see Google’s availability documentation and voicemail settings.

Custom rules versus call screening
Screening is an active, per-call choice. When enabled, you can press 1 to accept or 2 to send that call to voicemail, then continue listening in supported situations. A custom rule is automatic: the selected caller is routed without you answering or interacting. Details are in Google’s call-screening guide.

The rule editor is missing from the app
This is expected under Google’s current instructions. Open voice.google.com on a computer; mobile devices can view rules but are not documented as supporting creation, editing, or deletion.

The wrong action happens
Open Manage rules and move the intended rule higher. Only the first matching rule applies.
The contact cannot be found
Check that the correct Google account is active and that the person exists in Google Contacts or the organization directory. Refresh the contact record if the number changed.

The call still rings elsewhere
Review My devices, linked numbers, and other general forwarding settings. A custom rule is only one part of the account’s routing configuration.

Check whether Do Not Disturb is enabled. Google Voice displays a banner when it is active; turn it off in the app or website if universal voicemail was not intended.
