Check who can access it before sending. If you mean a video you found through Google Search, the result’s URL usually points to a webpage—not a direct video-file URL.
First, identify where the video is hosted
Google Search, Google Drive, and Google Photos handle different things. A Search result is an address for a webpage. A Drive link points to a file in Drive and works according to that file’s sharing permissions. A Photos download saves a copy of media from your Photos library to a device.

Google’s documented Drive workflow is to copy a link to the video; it does not establish a universal Google Search feature for extracting direct video-file URLs. See Google’s Drive video help.
Copy and share a video link in Google Drive
- Open Google Drive and locate the video. Drive lets you search by file type, including Videos.
- Open the video. Select the dropdown beside Share, then choose Copy link. If you want to direct someone to a particular moment, choose Copy link to this time where that option is available.
- Open the file’s sharing settings and choose the audience. Use Restricted for named or otherwise authorized people. Choose Anyone with the link only if broad access is intended and allowed by your account or organization.
- Paste the copied link into your message. If practical, check that it works for the intended recipient without widening access unnecessarily.
A Drive share link is not the same as a direct video-file URL. Access depends on permissions, and account or organization settings can limit the sharing options. Google also notes that link sharing can reveal the owner’s name and email address. Review Google’s guidance on sharing Drive files before making a link broadly accessible.

Download a video from Google Drive
- In Drive, select the video file.
- Right-click it and choose Download.
- Follow your browser’s prompt to save the file.
The download option may be unavailable because the owner has disabled downloads for viewers and commenters, or because account restrictions apply. Ask the owner for an authorized copy rather than trying to bypass the restriction. Google’s Drive download instructions also warn users to be cautious with suspicious files.
Download a video from Google Photos
On a computer
- Open Google Photos and select the video.
- Choose More → Download.
On Android
- Open the video in Google Photos.
- Choose More → Download if you need a device copy.
Google says the Android Download option does not appear when the video is already on the device. For media shared with you in a Photos conversation, Save adds a copy to your Photos library; use Download separately if your goal is a file in the device gallery. When the video appears only in Google Search
Copy the result page’s address from your browser’s address bar or use the result’s link controls. That gives you a link to the page, not necessarily to the media file itself. If you need to watch, share, or save the video, look for an option provided by the site that hosts it. Google Search results do not guarantee that a video is downloadable or that a link will remain available.

Safety and privacy checks before sharing or saving
- Check the audience: Anyone with the link may be able to open it, and the link can be forwarded. Keep private videos restricted unless broader access is intended.
- Check the owner identity: Google notes that link sharing may show the owner’s name and email. Consider that before sharing sensitive media.
- Be cautious with unexpected files and links: Do not open or download a video just because it appears in a message or search result. Google’s download guidance specifically cautions about suspicious files.
- Respect download controls: If the owner has disabled downloading, request an authorized copy instead of attempting to work around the setting.
