The big changes are a new `model switcher` and an updated `greeting`, both designed to make it clearer what kind of AI experience you’re starting.
If you’ve ever wondered why two prompts sometimes feel different—faster but less thorough, or slower but more detailed—this update targets that problem directly. The model switcher is the fastest way to bring consistency to how answers behave.

This guide covers what’s new, where to find the switcher and greeting, how to use them across Android, iPhone, and web, and what to do when either feature doesn’t show up.
What Google AI Mode is and what’s new
AI Mode is Google’s chat-style experience embedded into Google surfaces so you can ask questions, refine requests, and get AI-generated responses without jumping between apps. In most rollouts, the experience is tied to a supported Google account and an app/web version that includes AI capabilities.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
The update you’re seeing adds two visible UX changes:
- A model switcher so you can select which Gemini model you want to handle your request.
- A greeting that appears at the start of a chat to set context and guide how to begin.
Depending on your device and region, the UI may appear slightly different. But the underlying goal is consistent: fewer surprises, more control, and clearer onboarding.
Why the model switcher matters
Before this update, most users had limited visibility into which model was answering them. Even when the output looked similar, model behavior can vary based on speed/latency, reasoning style, and formatting choices.
With a switcher, you can deliberately trade off time and depth. In practice, you’ll usually see options aligned with Gemini’s common family split:
- “Pro” class models that tend to be better for complex reasoning, long context, and careful writing.
- “Flash” class models that tend to respond faster for shorter, iterative tasks.
Even if your exact list of models differs, the intent is the same: choose a tool that matches the job.
What to check before you update
Rollouts happen in stages. If the switcher and greeting aren’t visible, it’s often not a setting you missed—it’s a version or account eligibility issue.
Quick prerequisites checklist
- Update the app: Install the latest Google app or the Google app component that hosts AI Mode on your device.
- Update the browser (web): Use a current Chrome version so the UI and model controls render correctly.
- Sign in with the Google account you normally use.
- Check region and language: some features roll out by locale first.
As a rule: if your app version is 2–4 releases behind, you may see the older AI Mode UI without the new controls.

How to use the new model switcher (step-by-step)
The pattern is consistent: open AI Mode, choose the model from the switcher, then start your chat with a prompt that matches your chosen model’s strengths.
If you don’t see the switcher, check the troubleshooting section later in this guide.
On Android (Google app / Gemini entry points)
- Update Google from the Google Play Store.
- Open the Google app and tap the entry for AI (often labeled AI, Gemini, or AI Mode depending on your UI).
- Start or open a chat thread in AI Mode.
- Look near the top of the chat UI for a Model dropdown/switcher.
- Tap the model name and choose between the available options (commonly a Pro-like model and a Flash-like model).
- Type your prompt and send it. Your chosen model should apply to the conversation.
On iPhone and iPad
- Update the Google app in the App Store.
- Launch Google and open AI Mode (it may appear under a Gemini or AI entry point).
- Start a new AI Mode chat thread.
- Find the model switcher near the chat header or input area.
- Select your model from the list and enter your first prompt.
- If you switch models mid-conversation, watch how the UI labels the model for that session.
On the web (Chrome / Google surfaces)
- Go to the Google surface where AI Mode is available (the UI is rollout-dependent).
- Sign in to your Google account if prompted.
- Open AI Mode and create a new chat.
- Locate the Model selector at the top of the chat panel.
- Choose a model (for example, a Pro-like option for deep work or a Flash-like option for quick iterations).
- Send a prompt. Use the greeting as your baseline if it’s tailored to your first message.
Understanding the greeting and how it affects your first prompts
The updated greeting typically appears when you open a new AI Mode chat. It may ask what you want to do, offer example directions, or confirm the kind of help you’re requesting.
Even when it looks friendly, the greeting is functional: it reduces uncertainty about your intent and sets a default context for the first response.
Recommended Free Tools
What the greeting is usually doing
- Guiding you toward a task type (plan, write, summarize, troubleshoot).
- Formatting expectations (bullets, steps, drafts, rewrites).
- Confirming scope for better responses (length, audience, constraints).
How to respond when the greeting is inaccurate
If the greeting assumes something you didn’t intend, don’t fight it—correct it explicitly.
Use a prompt like: Ignore the greeting’s assumption. I want a 5-step checklist for [goal], aimed at [audience], with [constraints].
You’ll usually get a clean response on the next turn, even if the greeting was slightly off.
Choosing the right model for common tasks
You can treat the model switcher like a performance dial. If you consistently pick the wrong one, your outputs may feel mismatched: too slow for quick iterations or too terse for thorough work.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use these defaults when you’re deciding between a Pro-like and Flash-like option.
Complex writing, careful editing, long-context tasks
Pick the Pro-like model when you need structure, style consistency, or deeper reasoning across multiple constraints. Examples include proposals, policy drafts, and multi-part documentation.
Quick Q&A, short summaries, iterative brainstorming
Pick the Flash-like model when you’re exploring options and want fast turnaround. Examples include drafting subject lines, generating multiple variations, or quickly answering “which is better and why” questions.
Programming help and debugging
For debugging, start with Flash-like for speed, then switch to Pro-like if you need deeper explanation or careful step-by-step reasoning across a larger code path.

Data-heavy prompts or multi-constraint plans
If you’re combining constraints (time, budget, formats, dependencies), a Pro-like model is usually the safer first choice. Then use Flash-like for rapid iteration once the outline is solid.
Troubleshooting: model switcher or greeting not showing
Most issues fall into one of three buckets: rollout gating, version/UI rendering problems, or chat/session state.

- Google Pixel 10 Pro is the ultimate Pixel experience, featuring advanced AI with Gemini, unbelievable camera quality, impeccable design in two sizes, and the next-gen Google Tensor G5 chip[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works - Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Get a head start on syncing your data before it even arrives: After you purchase your new Pixel, look for an email that explains how to transfer your photos, videos, passwords, and more in just a few quick steps[11]
- Pixel’s pro camera system makes everything look amazing, even in low light; capture more of the scene with advanced Google AI models, and bring out incredible details with 100x Pro Res Zoom, stunning 50 MP images, and super steady videos in 8K[10]

Work through these in order.
Fixes that work most often
- Force a fresh start: Close the AI Mode chat and create a new thread after updating.
- Update the app: Install the latest Google app from your store.
- Update Chrome (web): Use Chrome 125+ or the latest available for your device.
- Log out and back in: This can refresh feature flags tied to your account.
- Check network: If you’re on a restricted network, AI UI elements may fail to load.
Account and rollout issues
Google features are often staged. If your friend has the model switcher but you don’t, that doesn’t mean your device is broken—it may mean your account hasn’t received the same rollout group yet.
If the greeting is missing but AI Mode works, try switching to another device or a web session using the same account. That helps determine whether the issue is device-specific or feature-flag specific.
Cache, permissions, and app version mismatches
- Android: Clear app cache for the Google app (avoid clearing storage unless you’re comfortable re-signing in).
- iPhone/iPad: Reinstall the app if UI components won’t load after an update.
- Web: Hard refresh with Ctrl+F5 (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac), then check if the model selector appears.
Privacy, data handling, and safety expectations
AI Mode is a chat interface, so it can process whatever you type. Treat it like you would any assistant: avoid sensitive details you wouldn’t want processed by a third-party service.
Google’s exact data handling depends on your account settings and product policies. The safest approach is to review the relevant privacy controls in your Google Account and product settings.
What you can control
- Account-level preferences for AI features (where available).
- Chat behavior by limiting what you provide (no secrets, no private identifiers).
- Device permissions (camera/mic/location) if the UI offers them for related features.
What to avoid
- Passwords, recovery codes, or full payment card data.
- Government IDs or full account numbers.
- Confidential company secrets without authorization and internal guidance.
Alternatives when AI Mode isn’t available yet
If you don’t see AI Mode at all—or the model switcher is missing while other parts work—use a fallback workflow so you’re never blocked.
Use Gemini directly
Gemini’s standalone experience is often available even when embedded AI Mode elements lag behind. You can still pick a model (when model options are exposed) and get similar chat outputs.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Small prompt habits matter more now that you can switch models intentionally.
- Assuming the greeting is a contract: If you need a specific output format, specify it. The greeting can guide, but it shouldn’t replace your constraints.
- Switching models mid-task without updating the prompt: If you change from Flash to Pro, resend the key requirements so the new model has the full context.
- Not stating constraints: “Write a cover letter” is ambiguous. Add audience, tone, length, and role title.
- Comparing outputs without controlling inputs: When benchmarking models, keep prompts identical and compare only one variable at a time.
FAQs about Google AI Mode model switching and greeting
Where do I find the model switcher in Google AI Mode?
Look near the top of the chat panel or in the chat header area. It usually appears when AI Mode has been updated and your account is eligible for the rollout.
Will my chosen model stay selected for the whole conversation?
In most UIs, the selection applies to that chat thread. If you switch models and don’t get the expected behavior, start a new chat thread and select the model again.
Why does the greeting sometimes feel repetitive?
Greeter text is often templated to reduce user effort. If it doesn’t match your goal, override it with a clear first prompt that includes your constraints.
Can I get faster answers without changing models?
Yes—shorten your prompt, reduce the number of requested deliverables, and ask for a first draft instead of a final version. Then iterate.
Does switching to a Pro-like model always produce better results?
Not always. For small, straightforward questions, a Flash-like model can be just as accurate and more efficient. Use Pro-like for complex reasoning, heavy constraints, or careful editing.
What if I updated but still don’t see the switcher or greeting?
Try a new chat thread, log out/in, and check whether the feature has reached your account. If you’re on web, hard refresh or try another browser. If none of that works, you may be waiting for the next rollout wave.

The updated Google AI Mode makes two things clearer: which model is answering you and how the chat gets started. Once you get used to picking a model, your prompts produce more predictable outcomes—especially for writing, debugging, and multi-step planning.
If the model switcher or greeting doesn’t show up right away, it’s usually a version or rollout delay. Update, start a new chat, and then use the troubleshooting checklist to confirm it’s not a UI rendering or account gating issue.
