If apps keep crashing on your Google TV Streamer 4K, first work out whether the problem is limited to one app or affects the whole device. For a single app, Google recommends checking for updates and force-stopping it. If several apps are slow or misbehaving, restart the Streamer and check for updates before considering more disruptive steps. A crash alone does not establish that the hardware is faulty.
First, identify whether one app or the whole device is affected
Note which app crashes and what happens: does it close immediately, or only during playback? Then check whether other apps and the Google TV interface behave normally. Google provides separate guidance for app crashes and for devices that are slow or laggy, so this distinction helps you choose the right next step.

- One app crashes, while other apps work: start with that app’s update and force-stop options.
- Several apps are slow or take too long to open: restart the device, close background apps, and check app and system updates.
Google’s app-crash guidance is aimed at the affected app. Its slow-device guidance addresses broader performance problems.

Check for an app update
Open the Play Store on your Google TV device, find the affected app, and install an available update. Reopen the app afterward to see whether the crash returns. Google lists checking app updates as the first step for an app that crashes.

Force stop the affected app
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the affected app. If needed, choose the option to view all apps.
- Select Force stop, confirm if prompted, then reopen the app.
Force stop closes the app; it is not the same as clearing its data. If the app continues to crash after these steps, Google advises contacting the app’s developer. See Google TV Help: Fix an app that crashes.
If several apps are slow, restart and update the Streamer
Restart the device
Use Settings > System > Restart. Once the device has restarted, check whether the broader slowdown or crashes persist. Google also recommends closing background apps when a device is slow or laggy.

Check app and system updates
Check for app updates in the Play Store, then look for a system update at Settings > System > About > System update. Google notes that the device may feel slower while app updates are running. Menu labels can vary with software version or region; if a path differs, look for the equivalent Apps, System, or About menu. The steps are covered in Google TV Help: Fix a slow or laggy Google TV device.

Check the connection and active profile before clearing app data
If the problem involves playback or broader device behavior, check that the Streamer is connected to the intended network and that the correct profile is selected. Google’s general troubleshooting guide includes both checks before clearing app data: Fix problems with your Google TV device.

Clearing an app’s data is more disruptive than force-stopping it. It resets app data stored on the device, and you should not assume that local settings or sign-in state will be preserved. Try it only after the less disruptive steps have failed, and be prepared to set up or sign in to the app again.
Choose the next step by symptom and disruption
| What you observe | Next step | Impact | Who to contact if it continues |
|---|---|---|---|
| One app crashes; other apps work | Update the app, then force stop and reopen it | Low; closes the app | The app’s developer |
| Several apps are slow or the device is laggy | Restart, close background apps, and check app and system updates | Low; restarts the device and may involve updates | Google or device support if the broader problem persists |
| The problem remains after earlier steps | Consider clearing data for the affected app | More disruptive; app data is reset | The app’s developer for a persistent app-specific issue |
| Other troubleshooting has failed | Consider a factory reset only as a last resort | High; erases all data on the device | Google or device support for persistent device-wide trouble |
Contact support before deciding whether to return it
If the same app still crashes after updating and force-stopping it, contact that app’s developer rather than assuming the Streamer is defective. If the interface and multiple apps remain slow or unstable after the broader troubleshooting steps, contact Google or device support. Google’s general device guide treats factory reset as a later option and warns that it erases all device data; try the earlier steps first.
