Google is rolling out a Material You redesign to Google Settings on Android, bringing the app’s look more in line with modern Android theming. If you’ve noticed updated colors, tighter layouts, or reorganized toggles, this is the change—usually delivered via a Google app update and staged server-side rollout.
This guide covers what changes to expect, what’s required to see the update on your device, how to update to the newest build, and what to do if the redesign doesn’t appear yet. It also calls out where key controls moved to, so you can find privacy, location, and account options without guesswork.

What’s changing in Google Settings on Android
The Material You redesign is primarily a UI refresh: the app’s typography, spacing, and component styling are updated to match Android’s dynamic theming. Depending on your device and Android version, the new layout can feel calmer and more consistent—especially when you’re switching between accounts, privacy controls, and service permissions.

Navigation and grouping: fewer taps, clearer categories
Even when the underlying settings stay the same, Google often reorganizes categories for speed and clarity. That usually means fewer “dead ends,” more consistent grouping of related toggles, and a more predictable back-and-forth through screens.
Prerequisites and what determines whether you see it
You can’t always force a redesign to appear instantly—Google frequently uses staged rollouts and server-side flags. Still, there are a few concrete factors that determine whether your device qualifies.
Android version (Android 14/15) and device support
Material You behavior is strongest on newer Android releases (commonly Android 14 and Android 15). On older versions, you may still see the redesign’s layout updates, but theme syncing can look less dynamic.
Google app and Google Settings version requirements
The redesign may land inside Google Settings itself or be triggered by a companion update (for example, the Google app). To check, open the Google Play Store listing for Google Settings, then verify you’re on the latest available version.
Theme and wallpaper settings (Material You behavior)
Material You uses your system theme colors. If your theme is set to something custom, don’t assume the redesign is missing—only the color accents may differ from what other screenshots show.
How to update and get the Material You version
Start with Play Store updates. If the rollout is staged, updating is still necessary—you just might need to wait after the update installs.
Update via Google Play Store
- Open Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon (top right).
- Select Manage apps and device.
- Under Updates available, install anything related to Google and Google Settings.
- After installation, open Google Settings and confirm the new Material You layout appears.
Join Google app beta programs (optional)
If you need the redesign earlier than the public rollout, you can try beta participation—when available. Beta builds can be less stable, so only use them if you’re comfortable with occasional bugs.

Where to find the Google Settings redesign
The app may be easiest to access through multiple entry points. Use whichever path matches what you’re trying to change—account, privacy, location, or notifications.
From the Settings app shortcut
- Open the device Settings app.
- Scroll to Google (or search for Google).
- Tap Google Settings.
From the Google app
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile icon (top right).
- Look for a Settings or Manage your Google Account entry that points into Google Settings.
Using search inside Android Settings
Android Settings has an internal search. This is useful when the redesign has moved items to different screens.
- Open Settings.
- Tap the Search bar.
- Type a setting keyword like location, ads, privacy, or notifications.
- Open the result that routes into Google Settings.
Feature walk-through: controls you’ll still use, now reorganized
Even with a new UI skin, the important part is the control surface: privacy permissions, account personalization, ads settings, and device service options. The redesign generally re-shelves these controls rather than removing them.
Account and personalization
Look for sections that describe your Google account options and personalization preferences. Expect clearer headings and more consistent toggle styles.
Privacy and data controls
Privacy options typically appear in structured categories (for example, activity-related controls and sharing preferences). If you remember a toggle existed, search within the Google Settings app to find it quickly.
Location, security, and services
Location permissions and security-related controls remain central. With the redesign, these screens tend to be more readable and less densely packed.
Ads and personalization options
Ads personalization controls usually sit near other advertising preferences. The UI redesign makes it easier to spot what’s on and what’s off, especially on light/dark theme transitions.

Gallery-style examples: common screens and what to check
Because rollouts vary by region and device, treat these as checklists. If your screen doesn’t match 1:1, the goal is to confirm you’re seeing the redesigned layout patterns and you can still reach the same controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTheme and icon color changes
Check whether the UI accents match your wallpaper-based theme. If accents look off, confirm your system theme is set to Material You (your exact label may vary by OEM).
Permission prompts and toggles
Open a permission category (for example, location) and confirm toggles look like the redesigned components. Old UIs often show smaller labels and more cramped spacing.
Notifications and sign-in prompts
Go to notification-related settings and verify you can still manage sign-in prompts, alerts, and related preferences. The redesign may reword some entries, but the intent should remain the same.
Troubleshooting: redesign not showing up
If you updated the app and still see the old UI, that’s usually one of these: you’re not on the right build, cache is stuck, or the rollout hasn’t reached your device yet.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →1) Confirm you’re on the latest Google Settings build
- Open Google Play Store.
- Go to Google Settings.
- Check for an Update button.
- If no update exists, confirm the installed version in the Play Store listing.
2) Clear cache/data for Google Settings
This can resolve UI flag issues after an update, but be careful: clearing data can sign you out of some in-app state.
- Open Settings on your phone.
- Tap Apps (or Apps & notifications).
- Select Google Settings.
- Tap Storage.
- First tap Clear cache.
- If still not working, tap Clear storage (or Clear data), then reopen the app.
3) Reboot and re-check theme settings
A restart forces the system theme engine to re-apply colors. Also verify your wallpaper-based theme is enabled so you can see Material You accents properly.

4) Wait for staged rollout and server-side flags
Google commonly uses staged rollouts, meaning two devices on the same app version can show different UI states. If your app is up to date, waiting 24–72 hours is often enough.
5) If you’re on a managed/work profile device
On work profiles, policies can hide or restrict parts of settings. If you can’t see specific menus in Google Settings, it may be policy-related rather than a UI version issue.

Common mistakes when updating Google Settings
- Updating only the Google app: sometimes you also need the Google Settings package update to see the redesign.
- Relying on screenshots from another phone: OEM skins and themes can change the look even on the same Google build.
- Skipping a reboot: theme changes often don’t fully propagate until you restart.
- Clearing data too aggressively: try cache first, then data only if necessary.
Alternatives if you need a specific setting right now
If the redesigned menus make it hard to locate a toggle quickly, use direct paths that don’t depend on the new layout.
Use Android search + direct links
Search in the Settings app and inside Google Settings for keywords like location history, web and app activity, or personalized ads. This is faster than scrolling through reorganized categories.
Google Account settings web portal
For many privacy and personalization options, the web portal is consistent and often easier to verify. Use your browser to confirm the same controls are applied even if the Android UI differs.
Device Settings vs Google Settings: know where each lives
Some controls (like system notifications, app permissions, and accessibility) may be in Android Settings rather than Google Settings. If you can’t find something, check the app-specific permission page for the Google app or related services.
Privacy and safety: what to double-check after the redesign
UI changes are easy to skim past. After a redesign, it’s smart to verify the settings that affect consent and data sharing still match your preferences.

Location access and notification permissions
Confirm that location permissions (including “Allow only while using” vs “Always”) still match what you intended. Review notification categories to avoid surprises after sign-in or system updates.
Sign-in and security prompts
Check whether security prompts are enabled where you expect them. If you recently changed phones or accounts, verify the right account is active inside Google Settings.
FAQs
Is the Material You redesign only for Pixel phones?
No. Material You is an Android theming system, so the redesign can appear on non-Pixel devices too. However, how it looks can differ due to OEM theming layers and Android versions.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWill my existing settings reset after the update?
Usually, no. Updates typically change the UI layout, not the underlying preferences. If you clear app data while troubleshooting, that can reset certain in-app state.
Why can’t I find a specific toggle I used before?
The redesign may reorganize categories or rename entries. Use search in Google Settings or Android Settings, and confirm you’re checking the right account profile.
What if my app is up to date but nothing changed?
That’s common with staged rollouts. Verify you’re on the newest Google Settings build, clear cache if needed, reboot, and give it 1–3 days.
Does this affect Google Account privacy settings?
The redesign shouldn’t change your actual privacy posture. It changes how settings are presented—your data sharing choices should remain intact unless you manually change toggles.

Bottom Line
The Material You redesign in Google Settings on Android is a UI modernization: theme-aware accents, clearer grouping, and more readable controls. Update via Google Play, confirm your theme settings, and use in-app search if items moved.
If the redesign doesn’t show up immediately, that usually means staged rollout timing or a caching/version mismatch. Clear cache, reboot, and wait—your settings should still be there, just in a refreshed layout.
