If you’ve switched away from Google Search but still miss its business-hours panel, open Google Maps directly. Search for the business, choose the right location, and check its hours. It’s a practical replacement for local business lookups—not a replacement for general web search—and important or unusual hours are worth confirming with the business.
How to check business hours in Google Maps
Google Maps puts a place’s hours alongside its address, directions, phone number, reviews, and—when available—website. The same basic lookup works on desktop and mobile; labels and controls can vary by device, language, region, and account.
On a computer
- Go to Google Maps.
- Search for the business and its location, such as Italian restaurant in Austin or ABC Dental Chicago.
- Select the correct result and check its open/closed status and weekly hours.
- Review any special-hours notice. Open the rest of the listing for the address, phone number, website, reviews, and directions; busy-time information may also appear.
On a phone
- Open the Google Maps app and search for the business.
- Add a city, neighborhood, or address if there may be more than one location.
- Tap the correct listing, confirm its address, and check the current status and hours.
- Use the listing’s phone, website, or directions controls if you need to verify the schedule or plan a visit.
You can search manually if you don’t want to grant the app location access. A query such as CVS 5th Avenue New York or DMV office near Arlington VA gives more context than “near me,” which depends on location being available and accurate.
How to tell whether the hours are reliable
Maps is convenient, but a listing is not a guarantee that the doors—or the service you need—will be available. Use this verification sequence for a routine visit:
#1 Best Overall
- Confirm that the listing is the right branch by checking its street address.
- Look for a holiday or special-hours notice, not just the normal weekly schedule.
- Check the business’s official website or store locator for the same location.
For a long drive, medical appointment, government-office visit, holiday trip, or late-night arrival, call the location after checking its listing and website. Hours can be stale after a move, ownership change, seasonal closure, or emergency.
Watch for holidays and temporary changes
Normal weekly hours may still be shown when a holiday schedule has not been added. Check the listing notice and the business’s own channels around holidays, severe weather, and local events; call if the timing matters. Check the service, not only whether the business is open
A location can be open while a particular service is not. A restaurant’s delivery hours may differ from dine-in hours; a bank’s lobby may close while an ATM remains available; and a store department or pharmacy counter may have its own schedule. Check service-specific hours or call to confirm the part you need.
Why Google Maps works as a local-search substitute
Google Maps is a separate app and web service from Google Search, but both are part of Google’s broader local-business ecosystem. Businesses can manage information through Google Business Profiles, which can affect how a business appears on Search and Maps. That does not mean every field shown in Search is sourced identically from Maps. Google’s overview of Business Profiles

- get around with real-time traffic information
Maps is a good fit when the question is about a physical place: it combines the hours lookup with directions and other location details. You can continue using another search engine for general web searches and keep Maps for places. That still uses Google for local information, and it does not make Maps a full alternative for news, shopping research, or broad web searches. For time-sensitive hours, verify the listing rather than relying on an AI-generated answer alone.

Google says a Business Profile can display a business’s hours, website, phone number, and location across its services, and that managing one is available at no charge. Use the right kind of hours
- Regular hours: Set the normal customer-facing schedule. For a business that closes and reopens during the day, enter separate time blocks for that day—for example, Monday 9:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m. Google’s editing instructions cover multiple entries on one day.
- Special hours: Use these for temporary changes such as holidays, events, or short closures. Google describes this feature for temporary adjustments or closures of up to six consecutive days. Schedules that continue past midnight need to be split across dates. Google’s special-hours guidance
- More hours: Use these for services with different schedules, such as takeout, delivery, drive-through, or pickup. Set regular hours first; Google says service-specific hours should generally fall within the primary schedule. Google’s guidance on additional hours
- Temporarily closed: For a closure lasting more than seven days, an off-season, or an unknown period, Google distinguishes this status from short-term special hours. Google’s temporary-closure guidance
Choose hours that reflect what customers can actually use
Google’s business-representation guidance gives category-specific examples: a bank may list lobby hours or, if that is not possible, drive-through hours; a gas station should use pump hours; a restaurant should use dine-in hours where possible or otherwise takeout, drive-through, or delivery hours; and a storage facility may use office hours or gate hours. Some appointment-only or variable-schedule businesses may not be suitable for ordinary public hours. Google’s business-representation guidelines
