Apple’s native Calculator app arrived on iPad with iPadOS 18, released September 16, 2024. The headline feature is Math Notes: it lets you type or handwrite calculations, reuse variables, and graph equations. It is a useful everyday and learning tool, but Apple’s documented features do not make it a substitute for every specialist graphing calculator or computer-algebra system.
What Apple added to iPad
Before iPadOS 18, iPad owners could use third-party calculator apps, but Apple did not provide its own native Calculator app for iPad. The iPadOS 18 version brings together a basic calculator, a scientific calculator, conversion tools, calculation history, and Math Notes. Apple designed the experience for the iPad’s larger screen and touch or Apple Pencil input. Apple’s iPadOS 18 announcement and official App Store listing describe these features.
The app is listed as free in the U.S. App Store. That is a U.S. storefront price, not a guarantee about every region or future listing.
Choose a calculator mode
Apple documents these controls in its iPad guide:
- Open Calculator.
- Tap Change Mode, then choose Basic or Scientific.
- For conversions, select Convert, then tap Unit.
- For handwritten or typed equations, variables, and graphs, select Math Notes.
The scientific mode includes powers, roots, exponents, fractions, logarithms, trigonometric functions, parentheses, scientific expressions, and memory functions. Convert supports categories such as length, speed, temperature, weight, power, and currency; the exact available choices can depend on the app and region. What Math Notes does
Math Notes is a calculation workspace available from Calculator and Notes, rather than a wholly separate calculator app. Enter an expression and add an equals sign to see a result. For example, a typed note could contain 125 + 48 =. You can also write equations by hand with Apple Pencil; iPadOS recognizes the expression and places its result inline after you enter the equals sign. This is a workflow for supported, recognized notation—not a promise that every handwritten symbol or mathematical expression will be interpreted correctly. Use variables for changing assumptions
Math Notes lets you assign a value to a letter or word and reuse it. For example, write x = 10 and then 2x + 5 =. Change the value of x to explore how dependent calculations change. That can help with practical what-if work—such as changing a price, tax rate, distance, or radius—without re-entering every expression.

Plot and compare equations
In Math Notes, you can tap the equals sign beside an equation to create a graph. Apple says graphs can be zoomed, panned, resized, and combined to compare equations. That makes the feature useful for visualizing relationships, but the published documentation does not establish the full scope of a dedicated graphing calculator or computer-algebra system. Apple’s support documentation and the App Store listing describe graphing and variables.
Write arithmetic in columns
Math Notes also supports vertical written arithmetic. Write a column of numbers, draw a line below it, and add an operation such as plus, minus, multiplication, or division; the iPad calculates the result from top to bottom. It is a more natural format for working through written arithmetic than entering each calculation on keypad buttons. Apple describes this interaction in its iPadOS 18 feature overview.

Apple Pencil is useful, not required
Apple Pencil makes handwriting the distinctive part of Math Notes, but it is not required to use Calculator or Math Notes. You can type expressions with a keyboard as well as enter calculations through the app’s controls. Handwriting recognition can misread ambiguous symbols, cramped writing, or unfamiliar notation, so check the expression shown on screen before relying on a result—especially for schoolwork, money, or technical calculations. Apple’s feature overview describes Apple Pencil and keyboard input in iPadOS 18.
Math Notes also works through Notes
Calculator is not the only place to use the feature. Math Notes is accessible in Notes, and notes created through Calculator synchronize to the Math Notes Smart Folder in Notes. Apple also describes entering mathematical expressions in supported apps such as Messages and Mail, where results can appear as keyboard suggestions. This connects calculation to note-taking and messaging instead of confining it to a calculator screen. Availability and behavior can vary by device, language, and region. Which iPads support iPadOS 18?
The native app arrived as part of iPadOS 18, so an iPad must support that operating system to get the feature through the update. Apple’s iPadOS 18 compatibility list includes:
- iPad Pro with M4
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch, 3rd generation and later
- iPad Pro 11-inch, 1st generation and later
- iPad Air with M2
- iPad Air, 3rd generation and later
- iPad, 7th generation and later
- iPad mini, 5th generation and later
These are the models on Apple’s iPadOS 18 list; they should not be read as a guarantee that every feature behaves identically on every model. Apple warns that feature availability can vary by device, language, and region. Check Apple’s compatibility and availability details for your specific iPad.

If Calculator is missing
Try these checks in order:
- Open Settings > General > About and check the installed iPadOS version. The native app came with iPadOS 18.
- Confirm that your model appears in Apple’s iPadOS 18 compatibility list above.
- Search the App Library as well as the Home Screen; the app may not be on the current Home Screen.
- If it was deleted, search the App Store for Calculator and verify that the developer is Apple before downloading the official listing.
Other App Store results may use similar names, so check the developer rather than assuming every result is Apple’s app.
When to use another calculator
Apple Calculator is a strong default for everyday arithmetic, common scientific functions, conversions, calculation history, and equation work that benefits from handwriting, reusable variables, or basic graphing. Choose a specialist app if your work depends on capabilities Apple does not promise in its public documentation, such as advanced symbolic algebra, calculus, formal statistics workflows, programming features, reverse Polish notation (RPN), customizable layouts, or specialized engineering and finance functions. Math Notes can plot equations, but that alone does not establish equivalence to dedicated graphing or computer-algebra software.
If you need a different input style or a deeper feature set, compare specialist apps against the particular functions you use, along with their current price, ads, subscriptions, and privacy terms. Apple’s app is the first option to try if your needs fit its documented tools; a third-party calculator may make sense when a specific capability is missing.
