Google Search removing continuous scrolling from results page

Seeing Google Search remove continuous scrolling from the results page can be frustrating—especially if you’ve gotten used to just gliding down results without paging.

In practice, continuous scrolling isn’t a hard guarantee. It’s controlled by experiments, device/browser behavior, and how Google renders results for your session. This guide explains why it disappears and gives you concrete fixes and workarounds across desktop and mobile.

What continuous scrolling in Google Search is (and what changed)

Continuous scrolling (sometimes described as infinite scroll) keeps loading additional results as you approach the bottom of the page, without requiring you to click page numbers.

When it’s “removed,” you’ll usually see either:

  • The scroll behavior stops after a certain set of results, then only updates when you click.

Over 2024–2025, Google has run multiple rendering and layout experiments. Even if the search engine hasn’t “changed” for everyone, the results UI can differ by browser, OS version, language, and experiment assignment.

Common reasons continuous scrolling disappears

Most cases fall into a few buckets. If you identify the bucket early, you can avoid hours of trial-and-error.

1) A/B testing or experiment assignment

Google frequently rolls out UI variants. Some variants show infinite scrolling, while others use pagination or “load more” patterns. Your session may land in the non-infinite variant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2) Browser settings or extensions blocking scripts

Continuous scrolling depends on JavaScript behavior. Extensions that block trackers/ad scripts, privacy tools, or script-blockers can prevent the additional results from loading.

3) Cache, cookies, or site data corruption

If your cookies for google.com or Google Search aren’t in a healthy state, the UI can fall back to a simpler results layout.

  • Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

4) Network or DNS interference

Some corporate networks, DNS filters, or “security” middleboxes can break dynamic requests required for endless loading.

5) Device/browser capability or rendering fallback

Older browsers, reduced motion modes, aggressive battery savers, or outdated app webviews can cause the results page to render in a fallback mode.

Quick checks that often fix it in minutes

Start with the fastest, highest-signal steps before changing settings deeply.

  1. Refresh the page (Ctrl+R / Cmd+R). If it’s a temporary rendering hiccup, this is enough.
  2. Sign out and sign in to Google (or try an Incognito/Private window).
  3. Disable extensions temporarily (especially ad blockers, tracker blockers, and script blockers).
  4. Try the same query in a different browser (Chrome vs Firefox, or Safari vs Chrome). If it returns elsewhere, your original browser is the likely culprit.
  5. Check for VPN/proxy. Turn it off and reload.

Desktop troubleshooting (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari)

These steps focus on restoring the script behavior that continuous scrolling requires.

Platform

Chrome / Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based)

  1. Open the search results page in a new Incognito window.
  2. Temporarily disable extensions: click the Extensions icon > toggle off ad/tracker/script blockers.
  3. Clear site data for Google: go to Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies (check your current mode), then Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > View permissions and data stored across sites > search for google.com > Remove.
  4. Make sure JavaScript is allowed: Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > JavaScript > Allowed.
  5. Reload the results page (Ctrl+R / Cmd+R) and scroll again.

Platform

Firefox

  1. Try Private Browsing (Ctrl+Shift+P).
  2. Disable tracking protection for google.com: open the shield icon in the address bar > turn off protections for that site.
  3. Check permissions: click the lock icon > Connection secure > More information > Permissions and confirm scripts aren’t blocked.
  4. Clear cookies/site data for google.com only (not all cookies): Settings > Privacy & Security > Cookies and Site Data > Manage Data > search for google.com > Remove Selected.
  5. Reload and test infinite scrolling behavior again.

Platform

Safari (macOS)

  1. Use a fresh Private window (File > New Private Window).
  2. Verify JavaScript isn’t disabled: Settings > Advanced > ensure Show Develop menu is enabled, then Develop > JavaScript > ensure it’s not blocked.
  3. Manage cookies: Settings (Safari) > Privacy > Manage Website Data > search for google.com > Remove.
  4. If you use content blockers (1Password Safari extension, ad blockers, etc.), disable them for google.com and reload.

Platform

What to look for

When continuous scrolling works, you’ll typically see new results appear as you near the bottom. If you instead see “Page 1 of N” style pagination or only a fixed set of results, you’re likely in a non-infinite experiment variant or blocked by scripts.

Android troubleshooting (Google app and Chrome)

On Android, the Google Search UI can be affected by the app’s webview, device settings, and installed privacy tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platform

Google app (Android)

  1. Force stop the app: Settings > Apps > Google > Force stop.
  2. Clear cache (not necessarily data): Settings > Apps > Google > Storage > Clear cache.
  3. Disable VPN/proxy and reload your query.
  4. Check app updates: open Play Store > Google > update it.
  5. Test continuous scrolling on Wi‑Fi vs mobile data—some filtered networks behave differently.

Platform

Chrome (Android)

  1. Open Chrome Settings > Privacy > Clear browsing data > Time range: Last 24 hours or All time; then choose Cookies and site data and Cached images and files.
  2. Restart Chrome after clearing, then go to google.com and test.
  3. Disable content blockers: Settings > Site settings > Pop-ups and redirects (and any browser-installed blockers), plus turn off any ad/tracker extension if you use one.
  4. Confirm JavaScript: Chrome Settings > Site settings > JavaScript > Allowed.

iPhone and iPad troubleshooting (Safari and Google app)

On iOS/iPadOS, content blockers and strict privacy settings can cause Google Search to render without continuous scrolling.

Platform

Safari (iPhone, iPad)

  1. Try Private Browsing: open Safari > tap Tabs > Private > search again.
  2. Temporarily disable content blockers: Settings > Safari > Content Blockers > toggle off.
  3. Clear cookies for google.com: Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > search for google.com > Delete.
  4. Check Advanced > JavaScript: Settings > Safari > Advanced > JavaScript > set to On.
  5. Reload the results and scroll.

Platform

Google app (iOS)

  1. Force restart: close the app and reopen; then update the app in the App Store if needed.
  2. Clear cache if the option exists in your Google app version (some versions expose it under Settings > Privacy).
  3. Disable VPN/proxy and content filtering apps that can affect webview traffic.

Account, location, and experiment effects

Even after you fix technical blockers, continuous scrolling may still not return because Google varies the UI by user context.

Signed-in vs signed-out

Test both states. Some UI experiments are tied to account personalization. If it works signed out but not signed in, the difference is likely account-related cookies or experiment assignment.

Language and region

Try the same query in a different language/region setting (for example, switch Google’s region or add a query modifier like site: while keeping language constant). UI layout can vary.

Device class

Google may serve different result page structures to phones vs tablets vs desktops. If you only see the issue on one device, treat it as a client rendering variant, not a broken feature.

When it will not return: fallback options

If you’ve verified JavaScript and cookies are fine and continuous scrolling still never appears, it may be a persistent variant for your account or region.

Use pagination controls

Look for Next or page numbers at the bottom of results. This is the most reliable alternative.

Use query refinements to reduce “scroll time”

Make your query narrower so fewer results are needed. Examples: add a year (2023), add a specific domain (site:github.com), or include key phrases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switch to a different results surface

Try the mobile-friendly view on desktop (or vice versa) by opening the same query in a different browser/device. You’re not “changing Google,” you’re changing the client surface.

Common mistakes that keep breaking continuous scrolling

  • Ad/tracker blockers left enabled: even if other sites load fine, Google Search can be stricter.
  • Clearing cookies globally and forgetting to re-test: you might fix it once but never confirm which setting mattered.
  • Testing only one query: a given query can trigger different result modules (news, shopping, rich answers). Try a generic query like “weather” or “best noise cancelling headphones 2026.”
  • Ignoring browser console errors: if you’re comfortable, open DevTools and check for blocked scripts or failed requests.

Troubleshooting checklist if continuous scrolling still won’t show

Use this as a single pass. Stop when the behavior returns.

  1. Incognito/Private test: if continuous scrolling works here, it’s almost certainly an extension or cookie/site-data issue.
  2. Extension binary search: disable half your extensions, reload, and repeat until you find the blocker.
  3. Reset site data for google.com: remove only google.com cookies/site data and reload.
  4. Disable VPN and test on a different network (mobile data vs Wi‑Fi).
  5. Try another browser on the same device. If it works on one and not another, the failing browser setup is the problem.
  6. Update the browser and OS: Chromium browsers and WebKit builds change how results are rendered.
  7. Check “Data Saver” / battery optimization: extreme savings can reduce background requests.

FAQ

Is Google Search continuous scrolling removed permanently?

Not necessarily. Many “removals” are actually experiment variants. If it returns on another browser/device (or in Private mode), it’s a strong sign it’s not permanent.

Does signing in affect the continuous scrolling behavior?

Yes. Some UI experiments are tied to logged-in context, cookies, personalization signals, or session state. Test both signed-in and signed-out states.

Will disabling ad blockers automatically restore it?

Often, yes—especially if a blocker prevents scripts or dynamic requests. If you’re using a tracker blocker, try disabling it for google.com specifically rather than turning it off system-wide.

Why do I see a “load more” button instead of infinite scroll?

Google can choose different loading patterns. A load-more button is still a dynamic results experience, but it’s not continuous scrolling.

What should I do if nothing changes after clearing cookies?

Try another browser (same device) and another network (different DNS/VPN). If it still never appears, your account/region may be assigned a non-infinite layout.

Bottom Line

When Google Search removing continuous scrolling from the results page happens, it’s usually a mix of experiments and client-side factors like blocked scripts, cookies, or privacy tools. Start with Private mode and extension checks, then clear google.com site data and test on another browser or network.

If the behavior doesn’t return after those steps, treat it as a variant you can work around with pagination and query refinement—it’s not always a fixable “broken feature.”
