Chrome controls parts of the browser; Google Search has its own appearance setting for its homepage and results; Search Console is a separate web app, and Google’s available documentation does not confirm a dedicated dark-mode switch for its interface. Identify which screen is dark before changing a setting.
Which part of the screen is dark?
A dark toolbar or browser settings page points to Chrome’s appearance. A dark Google homepage or results page points to Google Search’s appearance setting. If the Search Console workspace itself is dark, neither of those controls necessarily explains it: Search Console is a separate browser-based service for monitoring and troubleshooting a site’s presence in Google Search.

How to change Chrome’s appearance
On desktop, open Chrome’s appearance settings and choose Light, Dark, or Device. Device follows your device’s appearance setting. Chrome’s dark appearance affects browser surfaces such as the toolbar and settings, as well as some other pages; it does not establish the appearance setting for every website or Google product. Incognito windows can also make Chrome appear dark. That visual change is not proof that a website’s own theme changed.

How to change Google Search’s appearance
Google Search provides a separate appearance choice for its homepage, results page, and Search settings. Choose Device default to match the device’s color scheme, Dark theme for light text on a dark background, or Light theme for a light appearance. Google says that, on desktop, the Search theme choice is saved on each computer when you are signed in. Follow Google’s Search appearance instructions for the current controls.
What to do if Search Console is dark
Search Console is a browser-based Google service, but its interface is distinct from Google Search’s public-facing pages. The official Search Central appearance overview covers how websites appear in Google Search; it does not establish whether Search Console currently offers a dedicated dark-mode control. That omission is not proof that no such control exists in every account or interface version.

- Check that the dark area is inside Search Console rather than Chrome’s toolbar or a Google Search page.
- Inspect the current Search Console interface for an appearance or theme setting. Do not assume that Chrome’s or Google Search’s menu path also controls Search Console.
- If you cannot find a setting, the official sources cited here do not establish a supported way to change Search Console’s theme. Avoid treating a dark browser frame or an Incognito window as evidence that Search Console itself changed themes.
