Google Search bar widget redesign adds Dynamic Color on Android

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google is rolling out a redesigned Search bar widget on Android, bringing color behavior in line with modern Android theming via Dynamic Color. If you’re using Material You-style wallpaper theming, the widget can now visually match your home screen instead of staying fixed to a single scheme.

This guide covers what changed, what’s required for Dynamic Color to appear, how to get the updated widget on your launcher, and what to try when colors don’t update correctly.

What changed: Google Search bar widget redesign + Dynamic Color

The redesign focuses on the Search bar widget’s look and how it responds to your device theme. On supporting setups, the widget can adopt accent tones derived from your wallpaper—part of Android’s Dynamic Color system (commonly associated with Material You on Android 12+).

Practically, that means the widget is more likely to harmonize with your background, rather than appearing “stuck” in the default Google widget palette.

Prerequisites and what to check first

Before chasing widget color settings, confirm you’re in a supported configuration. Dynamic Color is tied to the Android theming engine and the Google app/widget package being current.

  • Android version: Dynamic Color behavior is most consistent on Android 12 (and later). On older versions, you may only get the classic widget look.
  • Google app and widgets: Ensure the Google app is updated in the Play Store so the widget gets the latest redesign.
  • Launcher support: Some launchers apply themes or handle widget rendering differently. Stock Launcher and many OEM launchers work best.
  • Wallpaper-based theming enabled: Dynamic Color typically uses wallpaper-derived colors. If wallpaper theming is off, the widget has fewer cues to match.

How Dynamic Color works on Android (and where it’s controlled)

Dynamic Color generally comes from Android’s theme generation, not from the widget alone. The widget reads the device’s current color accent/style and renders using those values.

On most devices, this is controlled through a setting path like:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Settings → Wallpaper & style (or Personalization) → Color theme
  • Option names vary by brand, but you’re looking for something like Wallpaper colors, Material You, or Dynamic colors.

If you change your wallpaper or disable wallpaper-based theming, the widget may not recolor until Android regenerates theme accents.

Step-by-step: set up the redesigned Google Search widget

Use this method to ensure you’re placing the correct widget instance (not an older one cached by your launcher).

  1. Open Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Google and update the app if an update is available.
  3. Go to your home screen and long-press an empty area to enter home screen edit mode (wording varies by launcher).
  4. Select Widgets.
  5. Find Google (or Google Search), then choose the Search bar widget variant that matches the redesigned style.
  6. Place it on the home screen and resize if your launcher supports multiple widget sizes.
  7. Wait a few seconds; if the widget doesn’t immediately recolor, change wallpaper-based theming settings (covered below) or reboot.

If you already placed a widget earlier, replacing it can matter. Old widget instances may keep their previously applied styling until they’re recreated.

Make the widget match your wallpaper (Dynamic Color troubleshooting)

If the widget isn’t showing Dynamic Color, treat it like a theme pipeline issue: widget → Google rendering → launcher → Android theme engine. The fixes below are ordered from most common to least common.

Widget still uses an old color

  1. Remove and re-add the widget: Long-press the widget → Remove, then reinsert from Widgets.
  2. Confirm Google app is updated: Play Store → Google → check for updates again.
  3. Trigger theme regeneration: Change your wallpaper slightly (or toggle color theme off/on) so Android recomputes accent colors.

Widget colors update only after reboot

  1. Reboot your phone once after updating Google app or changing wallpaper-based theming.
  2. After restart, return to the home screen and wait ~10–30 seconds for theming to settle.
  3. If it persists, clear app data for the Google app is generally a last resort—do it only if the widget behavior is consistently wrong and you’re okay signing in again (if applicable).

Only parts of the widget change color

Some widget elements may follow different styling layers (background, text, icon tint). If only one component updates, it usually means the widget is reading partial theme attributes.

  1. Resize the widget (if your launcher offers multiple dimensions).
  2. Delete and re-add the widget as a fresh instance.
  3. Check whether you’re using a custom theme/contrast mode that can affect rendering.

Dynamic Color is missing entirely

  1. Verify your system theme is using wallpaper-derived colors (look for a toggle like Wallpaper colors).
  2. Check Android version: if you’re on Android 11 or earlier, Dynamic Color may not behave the same way or may not be supported for this widget.
  3. Try a different launcher home screen layout. Some launchers don’t fully support themed widget rendering.
  4. Confirm battery saver or performance modes aren’t restricting theme updates.

Android version differences (Material You behavior)

Dynamic Color is most reliable on Android 12+. On Android 13 and Android 14, theming is generally more consistent across widgets—though OEM skins still change labels and sometimes override accent behaviors.

Android version Expected Dynamic Color behavior What to do if it doesn’t show
Android 12 Often supports wallpaper-derived accents; widget recolor may require re-adding after updates. Update Google app, remove/re-add widget, then reboot.
Android 13 Usually consistent with Material You; more stable widget recoloring. Check Wallpaper & style → Color theme and toggle wallpaper colors.
Android 14 Most consistent accent behavior; fewer “stuck color” cases. Resize or recreate widget if you changed theme recently.
Android 11 and earlier Dynamic color behavior may be limited or absent. Expect the classic widget palette; rely on launcher theme instead.

Common mistakes that prevent Dynamic Color

  • Leaving an old widget instance in place: Some widget styling doesn’t refresh correctly until the widget is removed and re-added.
  • Disabling wallpaper colors: If the system color theme is set to something fixed (or turned off), the widget has no Dynamic palette to use.
  • Ignoring launcher quirks: Themes and widgets are sometimes rendered differently depending on the launcher.
  • Theme changes not propagating: Changing wallpapers or system theme can lag; a reboot can accelerate stabilization.
  • Running a heavily customized display mode: High contrast modes, some accessibility display settings, or power-saving restrictions can affect how colors are applied.

Alternatives if you can’t get Dynamic Color

If your setup still won’t recolor the redesigned widget, you’ve got a few practical options that don’t require waiting on app rollouts.

  • Use a different widget size: Replacing the widget with another size can produce different rendering paths.
  • Switch launcher temporarily: Test with a launcher known for strong widget theming support, then decide whether to keep it.
  • Use system theme only: If wallpaper colors can’t be used (for example, you prefer fixed accents), set a manual system color theme and let the widget match that static scheme.
  • Rely on the Google Search shortcut: Some launchers offer widget-like shortcuts. They won’t behave like the actual themed widget, but you’ll keep a consistent UI.

FAQs

Do I need to enable a special setting inside the Google app?

Usually no. Dynamic Color is typically driven by Android’s wallpaper/theme settings and Google’s widget rendering. The Google app itself may not expose a separate “Dynamic Color” toggle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my widget look themed on one home screen but not another?

Some launchers handle home screens differently, especially when using grids, custom themes, or wallpaper per screen (feature availability varies). Re-adding the widget on the affected home screen often fixes it.

Will the widget always update automatically when I change wallpapers?

Most of the time, yes—but theme recomputation can lag. If it’s slow, toggle wallpaper colors off and back on, or reboot once after the wallpaper change.

Can I roll back to the older Search widget?

Not reliably. Widget variants depend on what’s included in your current Google app version. You may be able to remove and re-add an older variant if it still exists in the Widgets list, but that isn’t guaranteed.

Does Dynamic Color use more battery?

Theme computation can happen when you change wallpaper or theme settings, but normal day-to-day widget rendering isn’t usually the kind of workload that causes noticeable battery drain.

Bottom Line

The redesigned Google Search bar widget on Android is designed to look more native to your home screen by using Dynamic Color styling tied to your system theme. If you don’t see recoloring, the fix is typically straightforward: update the Google app, enable wallpaper-based color theming, and recreate the widget instance.

Once your Android theme pipeline is working, the widget should track your accent tones automatically—making your Search bar feel like it belongs in the same visual system as your wallpaper.
